This is a great entrance to the beaches. There are other public access points, but this one…read moreoutshines them all, by far. Most access points are just a set of stairs up and over the dunes. Whereas this one, has a bit more to it. With it being a public access point, it has a lot more parking available. There is some street parking, but if you are lucky, you will get one of the spots in the lot. There is a lot to offer here, more than just access to the beach. Right near the parking you will see two beach volleyball courts. Which is quite a nice addition. And this is even before you get to the beach. This is also where the public restrooms, public showers, and a nice new addition for donated beach toys (read that as left behind). Then there is the boardwalk up over the dune and you pour out onto the beaches. You don't have to use the boardwalk as you can use the footpaths on either side of the building. But, what I can tell you, wear your shoes, that sun heating up the walkways can be a bit of hinderance if you wanted to make a quick trip to your car and back.

In the earlier hours, the beach was still empty & quiet. Then we saw them - we saw these wild horses in small packs of 3 or 4, foraging along the grassy hills & walking through the sand. Our truck became quiet immediately. It amazed me that they weren't afraid of humans, or these trucks. They kept their distance, but they continued doing their own thing. Nature at its best. At one point, beyond the public beach, our truck got stuck in some mud. While waiting for a tow, we were treated to such a sight... initially we saw a small family of 3 horses. Then around the bend, came about 7 more, including a foal! They kind of trapsed about, hung around, & munched on nearby grass. When we got out of the mud, the horses still hung around, almost as if they enjoyed the attention & the company. As we finally headed back across the beach, the day grew warmer, and we saw more & more trucks lining the shore & setting up camp. Who knew?! Where I'm from, you can't drive onto the beach & setup camp right along the shore. Hmm... something for our next trip out here - note to self: rent a Jeep to hang on the beach. We were SO lucky to be in the right place at the right time! We didn't care that we were stuck there for an hour, because that just MADE our trip! It was quite the adventure. Corolla is a beautiful, scenic place & has an entirely different feel than other parts of the OBX.

6/23/20 The road way to the beach is not to far from the…read moreocean. The steps up to the ocean are designed for the handicapped or people carrying a lot of stuff. You can take the direct approach and just walk up the stairs if you want to. However, for the handicapped, there is no easy way of getting down the stairs to the hot sandy beach...most wheelchairs won't do well in soft sand. For those who did get into the ocean or are just covered in sweat, there is a shower at the bottom of the stairs. There is also a Portable Pottie too. This is if you can make it from the beach to the toilet. Hopefully it's not occupied. Your other two options are back to the place you're staying...or an aqua dump off in the ocean...its less messy...but... Anyhow, I have passed this parking lot/beach access many times but never thought about it. Guess when you are stay at another person's house, you notice things you might not have noticed before. Ths time is now 16:31 (4:31pm) and today has been a lazy day. I did go on the ocean, but I had to do it alone. Tomorrow maybe a different story. From the house I am staying at, I can see the comings and goings of family's visiting or leaving the beach.

Parking is plentiful and free. The City of Virginia Beach operates the beach and its guards. The beach is clean and wide. It's not as busy as the VBOF either. For surfing it's better than others with currents. Also a plus is its proximity to Back Bay Park. A drawback is that they do not have an infrastructure built up, but many consider this a plus since it's so natural. You can find a food truck on the road in for tacos named Bandino's. Come out and enjoy with warmer weather in the Spring. It's a family friendly beach, so bring the family and dog too! There are so many reasons why Virginia Beach residents feel as though they live in paradise. Our beaches point blank rock and few would dispute that the city knows how to take excellent care of them for our tourist and locals alike.

The dang golf carts! These people drive like they are immune to traffic laws and physics, pulling out in front of my three ton RV that would crush them flat. Yes, there is a 20 mile per hour speed limit on the island and I adhered to it, but wow. Look out for these people zipping in and around parking lots.
