Grease Monkey - The 2nd Price Hike Surprise

We've been to Grease Monkey twice for inspection stickers now, the most recent time being the last…read moretime for sure. During our first visit in November, I brought my wife's car in for an inspection. The technician told me we needed new wiper blades or the car would fail the inspection. Surprised, I asked, "Really?" to which he replied, "That's what I said." I didn't catch his name, as they don't wear uniforms, but he was young, scruffy-looking, and lacked any personality--that's the best I can do to describe him. My options were to accept a rejection sticker, buy wiper blades from an auto parts store, replace them myself, and return for a re-inspection, or give in to their upselling extortion and let them replace the blades. Wanting to get on with my day, I opted for the latter. The final bill for the inspection and wiper blades? $115. The second visit was in December when I brought my truck in for an inspection. The process took just 11 minutes. During that time, I witnessed a heated dispute between the same younger technician from the previous visit and an older fellow who looked like he'd just rolled out of bed and hadn't had his coffee or cigarette yet. He wasn't exactly the ideal customer-facing representative. Another customer and I watched and listened as the two argued, slamming tools and doors while hollering at each other. It was an impressive display of unprofessionalism. Watching this, I realized why I'd been upsold during my previous visit--they likely don't get many returning customers. When the inspection was done, I noticed one thing: unless the inspection process had changed, they didn't check my horn, which is a loud airhorn that you would definitely hear and I was waiting to hear. So visually, it seemed to pass. The older technician then came in and, in one breath, told me my brakes had "barely passed" inspection and offered to replace them - I did humor him by asking for the price, he said $1,200, thanked him, paid the woman at the counter, and left. The kicker? My brakes had less than 3,000 miles on them as I had front/back brakes replaced in October by the garage just up the street. So not sure (I am sure) what shenanigans were in play with that one. Maybe whatever part of the inspection that isn't done by the diagnostic machine is done visually and he just has bad eyesight.

Chris Veinot 5…read morereviews Went in for an oil change. Asked for the high mileage oil change which was on the list of oil change services on the counter. "We don't have that any more" But they did have a more expensive one available. I said 'ok, and please change the cabin air filter, also the right rear tire was low. Went to pay , and was told, "We couldn't get the cabin filter out, the car is designed that way. You can watch a you tube video to figure it out. We would have to cut the plastic with a dremel tool." Swear to god, wtf. Got in my car and low tire light was still on. Had to ask them to fill it. The hose they used had water coming from it which goes into my tire. Apparently they don't know you can drain water from the comppressor tank. YIKES. Training here doesn't seem to be their strong suit.
