I've been seeing a ton of signs around Utica, New Hartford and Frankfort for Kitlas, so after hitting up the local USPS, we gave it a go.
The atmosphere here is nice, good lighting and some local photos as decor. The 'music' playing was a local radio station, and that was slightly off putting. They ought to stream Pandora since they have WiFi. The service itself was excellent and I felt right at home. I was told of one soup special but as we were leaving, we saw a chalkboard kinda on the floor with other specials. I wish we were told about those as it may have altered our menu choices.
Food - we ordered the onion rings (which were absolutely delicious!!), I got a beef barley soup which was also very good although a bit on the salty side. Husband got a salad w/o dressing. It wasn't fancy, a bowl of iceberg and one slice of tomato, a thin curl of carrot and a slice of cucumber.
Dinner was nice, I got the lamb souvlaki. Flavorful but a little tough. Came with a decent salad that was lacking feta but had chopped onion, tomato, and black olives (which was swimming in way too much dressing) and a bit of rice, a yogurt sauce and a slice of pita bread which was the plates demise. I don't know anywhere else where they bake cheese on top of pita but it was awful. The cheese smelled especially foot odor/moldy and turned my appetite right off so I had a couple bites and took the rest to go.
Husband had a huge steak which wasn't the ribeye but they traded it out for a sirloin. It was cooked near perfect and came out with some epic tasting crinkle cut French fries. Yum!
As far as Kitlas Restaurant goes, they seem a bit all over the place in their menu and their website. I wasn't sure what sort of fare to expect since it's American, Italian Fine Dining, Barbecue, but also has Polish dishes as well as Greek. I think they have some definite hits but a couple misses which could be improved on. For instance putting dressing on the side with salads and not melting stinky cheese on pita.
I'm hopeful to go back and see if they've improved on some of their misses. This could be a really great restaurant in the Utica area that I would love to make a regular spot, especially with the free wifi as a big plus. read more
