I've been coming to Kirin with my family for years. It's such a beautiful space and just an elevated experience when craving Chinese food. There's now a beautiful bar with seating if coming with a few friends or wanting to grab a book and cozy up for some me time. We always order the crispy Potstickers and the Pork Mu Shu with extra pancakes to-go. For entrees we love the Andy's Chicken (clean white meat chicken pieces in a sweet & sour wine sauce), egg fried rice (with sliced carrot and edamame), and last night we ordered the combination Hong Kong pan-fried noodles with chicken, beef, prawns, and beautiful pieces of Bok choy. We've known a few of the wait staff for a few years so it's awesome to be able to share baby news and have that neighborhood feel. On a Sunday there were multiple large parties which was exciting to see. I would say Kirin is not your fast-casual spot on a budget, but really a spot that takes dishes to a creative next step with a bit more of a price bump. A beautiful spot to dine and support. Other yummy dishes are the Wonton Soup and Hot & Sour Soup for these cold evenings, any of the house made noodles, the Minced Chicken in Lettuce Wrap, and the Sesame Chicken if that's your vibe.

Chinese food for Christmas? Kirin was my late mother's favorite restaurant. My parents passed away 10 years ago in their 90s. December 25, 2022 ordered take out from Kirin in Berkeley while at my sister's house just off of Solano Ave. Unlike our late parents, our family likes the food hot and spicy. Large hot and sour soup came with lots of tofu, pork, green onions in a very spicy soup. Would order again. Sichuan chili shredded pork came with spicy pork, bamboo shoots, scallions in heavy sauce. One of my favorites Red curry tofu came with onions, peas, large chunks of tofu, in a red curry sauce just the way my wife like it. Another winner. Mushroom bok choy pretty ordinary must have been ordered by someone else, as not up to our spicy standards. Sichuan seafood noodle came with thick noodles, lots of huge mussels, squid, shrimp, and scallops in a delicious spicy sauce. We had turkey and all the fixings in addition to the food from Kirin. We were not the only ones with the idea of ordering Chinese food for Christmas. Two hour wait for food.

I had a wonderful time here! My husband and I went for a date night. The ambience is nice, the food was delicious, the service was great, the drinks were!

    Happy Family lunch entree.

This is one of our favorite Chinese dining establishments on our ongoing places to indulge. We've been here numerous times, and with each visit, we're pleasantly surprised with the scrumptious of our entrees. Always prepared to perfection. Service is always very attentive and courteous. We started off with the veggie soup, it was steaming HOT, the way soup should be, not lukewarm. My lunch partner (aka Hubby) had the Mandarin Beef. I had my 'usual' Happy Family. Rice and a small salad was included. As usual, there's so much food, we packed it up for dinner. On a side note, we celebrated my Father's 104th today. As always, we'll be visiting soon again. Try it, you'll love Kirin as much as we do.

The menu changes regularly, which keeps things interesting, but one thing that never changes is the consistently excellent service. One of my favorite things about this spot is how dog-friendly it is. The owner's dog is practically the co-owner of the bar and is often lounging around, adding even more personality to the experience. If you are lucky enough to meet him, just know the dog has standards. The dog only accepts meat, so do not bother offering him the tortilla from your taco. Trust me, you will be judged. Another major perk is that they allow outside food. Conveniently, there is a taco truck right next door serving some of the best carnitas tacos around, making it easy to pair great food with great drinks. Also, keep an eye on the TVs. They always seem to be playing some delightfully over-the-top late-night movie programming that inevitably sparks random conversations and plenty of laughter among the crowd. Overall, this is a fantastic neighborhood bar with a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere and a ton of personality. It can get crowded, so try to grab a spot early if you can. You'll notice plenty of regulars who come back again and again, and to me, that is always one of the best signs that a place is doing something right.

This was very nice; it was very spacious and offers outdoor patio with tiki vibes! Our group was able to snag the outdoor patio upstairs! Other people were free to also hang out in the patio too, but because we got there early and our group was big, we were able to put the tables together and it really just felt like we were the only ones there; very intimate. There is a pool table and a bar on the second floor, so you don't have to go back downstairs. The staff were very friendly and helpful. They provided great customer service and came by to our table to pick up empty glasses. There was an incident that happened where a man was taking pictures of people in the bar and he came outside to the patio and started taking photos of our group, which we felt very uncomfortable about. We alerted staff and they were able to handle the situation and came back to check on us. They don't serve food here, but they do allow you to bring food from other places! That was very convenient because we were already comfortable and didn't want to leave to go somewhere else. Tacos El Autlense is a 5 min walk away and it's one of my fave places to get tacos; that's where we got our food at! I literally had it the night before too hahaha, but I wasn't complaining! After a hike in Berkeley, we saw we were close to this Albany location so we popped in at 2:30pm (they closed at 3pm). Got seated immediately. It was bigger than the Oakland location and (to my liking) more calm/quiet (though that could have been bc we were there at an off hour instead of prime dinner time, but nonetheless it was very much enjoyed). Similar to the Oakland location, they walk handrolls out one at a time. I don't know if they were short on staff because of the off hour, but every roll we had, the seaweed was soggy/not crisp. Unsure if it was not fresh OR if it was just sitting in the kitchen, and not the biggest deal, but I definitely preferred the seaweed at the Oakland location. That said the fish was good and the rice was well seasoned. I do think if I have a craving for handrolls, I'll prob go to the Oakland location.

The Samakeh (fish) was our least favorite--pretty bland and not very memorable. One thing I noticed was that the carb-to-protein portion felt a bit heavy. We had at least 1/3 of the rice/couscous left over, while all the protein was gone. Overall, a solid meal. I'd definitely come back for the Maklouba and chicken kabob!

I was there the other night with my beer buddy and all around friend with the same first name as I (and that's another story!) for the tribute to the local beloved character that passed recently, Mr. Bailey Pendergrass. A longtime institution in the Berkeley music scene from way back in the day till present. An interesting, kind fellow who still walked around in skinny trousers and a leather jacket- even on very hot days. And a hairdo like no other! He kind of reminded me of a character from Rocky Horror Picture Show or someone who could be played by Johnny Depp in some hip artistic movie. A bit of an eccentric, soft-spoken, amazingly charming man. A joy to sit down and chat with who had strong opinions and a distrust for doctors and their prescribed medication's,etc. I don't go very far back other than six or seven years when I met him at a popular watering hole called the Cornerstone on Shattuck. He would invite me to hang out while he ate his standard hamburger and fries and wash it down with what I remember was cranberry juice. He could never finish the whole burger so he'd take half home but would eat the fries usually, with a little help from me. We would talk about Minneapolis (where I'm from) and Prince of course, and he would share interesting stories. I'd keep him company until the music event would start where he had carte blanche, complementary entry with a plus one at the Cornerstone. I was his plus one and it was fun one night. I'll have to dig up the mixed CDs that he made for me that he presented in a recycled/repurposed "In-n-Out" bag, it was a nice touch. There was a little hand written note as well. The IVY ROOM put on a nice event and many showed up to pay their respect. Some were given a chance to get on the stage and recall memories. However, the crowd never stopped talking, so it was very hard to hear their praises, etc. The bartender was superb, but I'm sorry I didn't catch her name, very kind and approachable and humorous and of course, extremely efficient! It's a nice cozy room with a lot of history and an eclectic group of patrons. I chatted with a couple of extremely friendly kind people. However, I left before the music started as after a long day of work, I started to fade. I've been coming here a bit more regularly, lately - more visits in the last year compared to the previous decade, in fact. Now I wonder what I was waiting for. According to the East Bay Express, Schmidt's Pub is "basically your living room, but better" - that does sum it up, except that very few of us have living rooms anything like this, with a cozy fireplace surrounded by comfy armchairs and rustic tables beside sunny windows. Not many of us have living rooms with Old Speckled Hen on tap, or populated with an entertaining parade of quirky folk and friendly dogs. If the people and dogs are not entertaining enough then pick up a copy of Calvin and Hobbes or A History of Clay Pipes (okay, I made that one up) and have a little retreat with a pint. 4/5 Green Stars for social and environmental impact, based on these factors: * Beer on tap (transported in reusable kegs) has a much lower footprint compared to bottles or cans. * Allows you to bring your own food, which is good for folk like vegans who are often more comfortable with BYO. * The snacks available at the counter could be a bit more Berkeley (or Albany)! They were mostly from big corps - Lays chips (PepsiCo) and chocolate bars from Mars. Would be nice to see a more imaginative/ethical selection. * A great community space with an inclusive atmosphere. Schmidt's is home to many groups (e.g., knitting) and provides a second family for many, some who send postcards from their trips! * Finally, we shouldn't underestimate the importance of having a place to slow down, reflect and connect with each other a little. In that respect, Schmidt's Pub is worth its weight in gold.
