My son George (age 12) just loves it here! At Walt Whitman!…read moreWe stayed in a more local camp last year (Covid and last minute with one of his best friends) in sleepaway. This was a compromise as George went with a best friend new to sleepaway who needed a last minute spot. George got back and said never again I have to go back to Walt Whitman - nothing compares! I called Jed and Carolyn right away and explained George's desire! He and the bestie are now going to Walt Whitman for this summer and are super excited! Just great people, great sports, great friends, great counsler a, great food, perfect accommodations a! Just everything is 5 And beyond! The level of service is just beyond compare! Love love love! Jed, Carolyn, Stephanie, Matt and all of the counselors are just the best!!!

I commend the camp for having everything from soccer to art to sing-alongs to sailing. I wish I had been more confident at the time I was there because I spent most of my time feeling like an outsider. I was teased because I had eczema. I was teased because I was different--I attended public school and came from a middle class family. I didn't have the latest and greatest clothing or sports equipment. My last summer there was the worst. I was ostracized by my bunkmates and routinely left behind. Counselors didn't seem to notice but then I was the quiet type and too embarrassed to speak up about what was happening to me. I hope things are different now and I hope counselors are trained to instill kindness and caring in all campers and to address things when they happen instead of laughing it off or encouraging it.

Over 100 years operating as a boys sleep-away sports camp on Lake Winnepesaukee surrounded by the White Mountains, it has some of the best views in the country. A great summer adventure for any kid looking to experience a unique summer sports adventure; campers are exposed to a variety of sports and mentored by an international staff comprised of mainly sport-specific counselors, the campers will experience a summer like no other!

The campus, on the shores of Lake Winnipesaukee, is absolutely majestic. Yes, there are some bugs...but that's merely an insignificant part of being out in nature and such a beautifully isolated place! Another truly unique feature of Winaukee is that their camp is divided into a Mainland (for younger campers) and an Island (for teenage boys): this allows for two different, age-appropriate cultures that really can't be found at any other camp. Winaukee is a sports camp - pretty much anything you want to play, they have it, along with skilled coaches and periods throughout the day to train and improve, and a waterfront with all the lake activities you could ask for. The training can be as intense or as recreational as you want, it really just depends on how serious you want to be. Beyond sports, there are so many additional events and activities that give the Camp its true spirit: camp fires, community rallies, inter/outer camp competitions, amazing off campus trips to places like Boston and even Canada, and many other traditions that can only be understood if you've been lucky enough to be a part of them. Unfortunately, any place is going to have occasional unpleasant experiences; however, for about 98% of the kids, they leave in tears at the end of the summer because they aren't ready to go home.

He got familiar with animals and barn duties in his first year, hiking for long treks (16 and 26 miles in the High Peaks of the Adirondacks!) in his second year, and bouldering in nature in his third, all the while making strong bonds with fellow campers and counselors. He looks forward to coming back as a counselor one year, and I couldn't be more excited for him. My 9 year old daughter had the opportunity of attending Firefly Song for her first time this year. She came home with wonderful memories of the camp community, and revealed in describing to us her daily routine -which included chores, Quaker inspired silent meetings and songs, and swimming in the lake every single day! She can't wait to keep going back.

After one good summer at Timberlake, we uncovered the ugly underbelly at Farm & Wilderness…read more In 2023, when other camps had moved on from all Covid protocols, F & W insisted on three days of covid testing from their campers at the outset. When they finally extracted a positive test from a cabin mate of my twin boys, the 5 remaining cabin kids were separated from the camp, made to wear masks indoors and out for 10 days. About half of their session. Despite testing negative consistently. When asked why in the year 2023 they were going well beyond CDC guidelines with their policy, there were no good answers. "Unfortunately, Covid isn't behind us yet, but we gave your cabin an oreo cheesecake and they loved it." Farm and Wilderness could be a great version of itself, outdoors and unplugged and accepting and spirited, but unfortunately they are entangled in a strange ideology where they think they can control what is not controllable. Predictably it backfired. Every kid ended up with a debilitating case of norovirus at the end of the session and my twins came back upset from a summer of isolation and pariah-like exclusion from the campers. Lasting bonds weren't made and refunds weren't offered. It's their policy to make, obviously, it's just not grounded in the child's actual experience. It's grounded in fear.

The counselors are exceptionally well-trained, receiving a full week of preparation focused on safety, team-building, and camper connection before the kids even arrive. From counselors to campers to parents, everyone is welcomed like family. The camp places a strong emphasis on inclusion and encourages kids to step out of their comfort zones, try new things, and take pride in their accomplishments. We were initially nervous sending our daughter away for three weeks that first summer, but on her first phone call home, she BEGGED to stay the full six weeks. Camp has structure, but it's structure inside a framework that's different from home or school. At K&E, the kids have a safe space to grow in ways we didn't even realize were possible. Our daughter is creating lifelong friendships, learning the importance of teamwork, & having an absolute blast in the process--and for us, that's absolutely priceless.
