Ann Arbor is always such an interesting spot for a night out. During the school year, the streets…read moreare teeming with college kids bouncing around, which of course is what you would expect from a great college town. What I do love about Ann Arbor is that they balance out the drunk haunts of young adults with great restaurants and high end bars for the people looking for more than a pitcher of cheap beer. Rabbit Hole is one of those spots. Down the same little alley way as Circ Bar, this underground bar is tucked away, stone hallways and open up and lead to different openings that provide seating, a dance floor and an amazingly stocked bar. If you like bourbon you will love this spot. Our bartender was fantastic, absolutely worked with me on working out a drink. I know I took a pic of an espresso martini, but my drink was made perfect also. Another nice surprise was that it wasn't some crazy price on the drink (I mean any crazier than other places and quite cheaper than around my home), especially for Ann Arbor. Walking away from the bar is a dance floor, and surrounding it are booths in a separate rooms and tables on a level up from the dance floor. There are also two hallways that lead to more booths and tables in different areas of the bar. As you can imagine this is a huge place. We came on a Friday and it wasn't very busy, but school is out and the weather had just broke so not surprising. I really enjoyed my time and the company I was with, and I would definitely go back.

Definitely a bit confusing to figure out where to go. I wish I had been given some direction. There is seating against the wall throughout the winding halls. There is a dance floor and a couple bars. I loved the look which would definitely bring me back if I had also loved the Cocktails. The drink I ordered was way too sweet. I was underwhelmed. Most of their drinks looked on the sweeter side even the bartender mentioned. For my second I just ordered a glass of bubbly. It was also on the sweeter side but an improvement. For the prices, I really don't want to have to get up, find my way back to the bar to order my drink, then walk back to my seat avoiding the people and trying not to spill.

Here's what I felt missed the bar... First, a speakeasy's initial location of "secrecy"... I don't think the top floor of Monaco Bay is that difficult to find. In fact, there is a giant "Gatsby" sign lit up outside. Even if it is modern, perhaps an unmarked door at the entrance could enhance the overall feel. Second, the expectation of innovative cocktails that take you back to an era. The specials were the same as Monaco and the bartender didn't know what the night's special actually was... There's a lot of potential here to boast old custom cocktails from scratch- with a modern twist. Third, the atmosphere. The exposed brick, dark woods, and lavish style add to the tone. Would be really great if there were candles on tables instead of incredibly bright lights drilled into the floor. I did enjoy the unique lights hanging above the bar though. The decor played into vintage modern, but it's lacking some authenticity. Also, the DJ seemed to just play popular culture. Would have loved to hear some swing or jazz remixes instead.

I mean come on - this place is full of brand spankin' new "pleather" couches and flat-screen televisions... What's sketchy about it? That said. It's over priced. They have nicer seating than most. And offer some cool all glass hookah pipes but it's not worth the 20% boost in cost (compared to Blue Midnight, which is next door). One other complaint: I hate it when Hookah bars line the front of their store space with "other" smoking paraphernalia. I'm not a prude or anything but smoking a hookah pipe is equivalent to smoking a pipe or a cigar. That said I think there is a real marketing flaw in lining the store with expensive bongs and marijuana pipes. It projects a crap message: that hookah smoking is equivalent to smoking other things; I'm fine with pot smoking but it's a crap marketing move and it'll alienate some of your clientèle. Case in point: this might be the reason Matt C. describes the place as "sketchy," I don't know him so that's just my educated guess. All in all: it's okay.

They have a large selection of flavors to choose from, and tend to be attentive in adding coals. They additionally have a small selection of drinks to choose from, but no external drinks may be brought in. If you like smoking shisha enough, they even sell pipes and tobacco for you take home. While not my favorite place in town, it is opened late to appease the bar crowds. Since many people don't stay out too late on weekdays, this makes Six Lounge a decent place to study at night.
