I had a lovely experience at King's Paint and Paper today. I brought in a photo of a can of Benjamin Moore paint that was used on my front door 20 years ago. The BM Cobalt Blue color and quality of the paint has stood up beautifully for years. The guys (Tom? Jason?) were extremely friendly and helpful explaining why the paint was discontinued and then mixed for me the new version of the paint. They even gave me my original Painting Contractor's discount! Great customer service. I took in a can of paint from 2012 that still had quite a bit in it, asking if it was still good. The answer was yes, but I would need to strain and stir, instead of having it shaken due to the condition of the can. I really didn't want to deal with it, and I was going g to buy a new can. They offered to have me buy a new empty can, and strainer and they strained it and put it in the shaker, saved me a lot of money! read more

Went to Kings Paint in Capitola to get a custom color matched... The heavy latino man behind the counter was on his phone and he didn't even look up at me. Says "what do you want?" I start to explain I need a color matched and - still not even looking at me says "we can't match the sheen" - mind you he still hasn't even looked at me or the sample I brought in. I asked further - "how close could you get?" At which point he slams his phone down on the counter, sighs heavily, and grabs the sample out of my hand. Tosses it back at me and says we don't have that kind of paint... I say "you don't have interior satin paint?" He says "yeah - but it won't match..." He's back on his phone again.. I turned around and walked out. Clearly this business is not interested in providing any customer service whatsoever... And clearly this individual has no business interacting with customers - ever. I own a design and construction consulting firm in Santa Cruz and have multiple projects going at any given time.. I try to give my business to local sources to support our community. This person has no idea the amount of business he has lost for his employer with one 5 minute interaction. read more

They do a great job but don't expect them to color match your paint white you wait at the Scotts Valley location. Great quality paint.

These guys are so knowledgeable and full of amazing tips and expertise. Obviously they do most of their business with contractors, but they aren't too snooty to help out a small homeowner who doesn't know much. Went in to get 2 gallons of interior paint. I was the only person in the store being helped by two guys. When discussing products, I was quoted $34.99 per gallon by one guy. I said I'd take it. As I had a coupon for $20 off $75, I said I would look for something for $5 to add to get me over the $75 amount. The other guy at the register getting me the total said, "Don't worry about it, we'll include tax to get you to the $75 amount." I thought this was great. After paying, I had to ask for my receipt. Why? Because they charged me $39.99 for the paint!! When I ask I was told, "The other guy gave you the wrong price." I thought to myself, "Why didn't you say something when I was being help?" Bottom line, they jacked up the price to reduce the "loss" from the coupon. Sorry, I don't like being cheated! Also, there was a "fee" for adding the color? Come on! As for the paint? 1. In both gallons, I found hardened chucks in the paint when stirring and on the roller when painting. Not good! I found the paint to be more runny then another brand that can be found across the street. I've used Behr paint for 20 years now, not sure why I switched this time. I find Behr to be a better product (as does Consumer Reports). Though I desire to keep my dollars local, I'd rather deal with a store that charges me what they say they're going to, for a superior product. (And they don't charge for adding the color to the paint.) read more

I had a very strange experience at the Capitola store. I had one very helpful person answering my questions then he was no longer on the floor, I assumed he was busy in the back. As I had another question, I went to the person behind the counter and asked my questions. When I was ready to pay the original young man started to check me out, then took a phone call. The second person helping me then proceeded to check me out and I stated that the young man had started the process and I could wait. I was then reprimanded three times for taking up the time of a second employee. I do wonder if this scenario would have gone differently if I were not female. The tone was very condescending. I ended up walking out due to the belligerence of the second employee. I'm taking my business to Kelly Moore as I've never had anything by positive experiences there. read more

Terrible experience getting paint samples here. Will NOT go back! I tried to support a local business and they were rude and only cater to painters. I was disappointed by the way they treated me. After talking with the general manager who only defended his store and how I was treated (no extra help in looking at colors- expensive paint samples $10 and tax --and rude customer service)- I am even more sure about not going back. I guess I'm headed over the hill. read more

Where do I even begin? First of all support your local mom and pop shops! The staff is so helpful, welcoming, and nice! These guys know their stuff and have amazing knowledge about paints and can point you in the right direction for any paint job. I saw nothing but local painters come in and out the entire time so you know if the professionals go there you're in good hands! Can't say enough good things about these guys, I'm going to miss their signs off of Soquel but their new shop is awesome and I'm glad I have a local paint shop now for all of my upcoming projects. read more

We chose a small local paint store in the hopes of not only supporting local businesses but to also hopefully get some assistance. My husband and I were in the paint shop for more than 15 minutes and nobody ever asked us if we would like assistance even though we were the only people in the store. Love that they give you discounts, I mean who doesn't love a bit of a discount!! Love that they managed to color match two gallons, a month apart, of a pretty dark brown paint, which I was really worried about as was only one coat into my large kitchen. Love the friendly attitude every time I go in though realize they are very popular and sometimes a little busy due to lots of commercial requests. Love that I went into 2 diff home depots for some cabinet paint, I hadn't tried before, only to find out is 'order online only' to find it available there and they gave me honest reviews for all brands they sold, didn't matter which was more expensive. Don't love that they moved another mile away from me but that's not a huge problem. Just need to plan more rooms to decorate. read more

Probably one of the better resources for matching color in the county. The Soquel guys are knowledgeable and helpful while the SV guys are less so unless you catch one of the owners. I've purchased several hundred dollars of paint and supplies and recently returned a simple drop cloth ($12). To my surprise they charged me $2 because I didn't have the receipt. Even though the cloth was tagged with their label and the guy remembered selling it to me. He smiled when I told him I thought it was a joke and would find a new source. I think they really cater to the contractors more than the home owner. read more

Bought a can of expensive BM Aura semi-gloss - one of the most expensive paints on the market, and had them color-match. Brought it in THREE times to have color adjusted no small amount. Supposedly, the second guy to do it was their best color-matcher. They do it by eye rather than computer (not a bad thing if skilled), but do it under a very limited light spectrum. Bring it out in the daylight, and it was a joke each time. The color was incredibly far off. I've had color matching done before elsewhere, so I have a good idea what to expect. Both these other times by eye, and both I felt were done excellently. At that point, they could not give me a duplicatable color code. I ended up with an expensive paint I can't match accurately - at least here. They should have supplied me with another can that they could give me a color code on. I probably should have just chose a close stock shade, except I was reassured they would do a good job of it. Even after the third try, I had to add a few onces of a yellow-gold white I had at home to warm and lighten the tone further. Otherwise, staff did give me lots of good painting tips, especially the manager. read more

I can't say enough good things about this place. I started going there in 2012 when I bought a fixer upper. I had many projects that required a color match--paint as well as stain. I laid maple hardwood flooring throughout, and these guys mixed stain to match my stair treads. Since then, I did a major reno on a house in Texas, and could not find a single place in the area that could paint/stain match like the guys at King's. They match by EYE, and, and do a better job than a big box store can do with a computer. The employees seem to love working there, because there is very low turnover and they are super personable. I could get paint and stain cheaply from the big box stores, but I love the skill and customer service I get from King's. They are a great example of how small businesses can survive in an Amazon world. read more
