I highly recommend this for anyone who is looking to volunteer in the community and help make a difference. It's a five year commitment - you get paired up with an eighth grader and you are their mentor until they graduate from high school. The goal of the program is to encourage them and provide guidance to help them along the way. You are required to spend a minimum of eight hours per month with your mentee - but scheduled program activities count towards those eight hours. The people who run the program - Carrie, Tina and Dara - are amazing. Carrie does such a good job pairing up mentors and mentees. Operation Jump Start has a great support system so you never feel like you are alone - they are there for you every step of the way. The program offers structured activities through out the year - and they vary from workshops to museum trips to Cirque du Soleil to rock climbing, etc. It's so much fun. I've done so many things I never thought I'd do like surfing and snowboarding - and going to the opera!

They offer mostly structured meetings to help the students. So as a mentor you don't always need to worry about planning what to do. As Kreuzensolo mentions, you do spend some of your own money, but the organization never asks you to spend anything you don't want to. It is completely up to you. There is never any pressure. As Mary mentions, the organization provides great support for the mentors and more importantly the students. Like any non-profit they suffer from being understaffed and underfunded. As a result some of the sessions could be better organized. However the effort put in by leaders such as Erik can't be questioned. All the mentors and staff genuinely want to see the students succeed and get to college. If you feel strongly about helping educate under served students, then I highly recommend checking the organization out.

I work in retail and see him working around the clock, night and day for his community. I let him know that I knew of people who needed help and he offered to extend his hours so I can stop by after work to pick up what my friends needed. In addition to his local contributions he also ships containers to the communities in the country of Trinidad. He's showed me footage of his work which I believe he uploads to a YouTube channel, and you can see the joy in his eyes when he puts a smile on someone's face. Too bad they don't allow seconds after my first plate. It depends on how many people there.

My son is in…read morethe autism spectrum and he started swimming lessons here, all the young adults teaching here are so nice and patient with him, my son was very afraid of being in a pool, everything that was water related was overwhelming for him, thanks to this swimming lessons my son actually was able to go to a water park for the first time, he's about to be 12 and this summer for the first time he was able to enjoy a water slide and small pools, Jax Cole is always making sure that kids are learning enough to move them to the next swimming level, and she's always so kind and attentive with all parents always trying to answer all of our questions making us feel welcomed into the YMCA aquatics community.

Despite their initial help with a different matter, my follow-up emails about kidscheck concerns were never meaningfully addressed. On October 6, 2024, I visited the church in person to try to discuss these concerns directly. Unfortunately, I still wasn't able to get a clear response or follow-through. As someone who has both communicated with them extensively and visited in person, I felt disappointed by their lack of engagement on this important issue.

4/7/23 What a PHENOMENAL experience!!…read more My brother gave a heads up about doing a demo for this facility a few days ago. So I did not know what I was walking into and today I had the biggest surprise of all. The stunning, the spectacular the amazing Bev Lazo Gonzalez, welcomed my brother & I with such warmth & hospitality that it felt like she's a long lost family. She promptly greeted me for my birthday-something unexpected:)) We were introduced another Chef Virginia & the rest of the wonderful folks that operate this facility. I really had no clue what I was walking into, all I was told was that my brother was doing a demo. In addition, we were given a tour & Virginia spoke highly of facility's history & their main goal/mission-which is to serve the community by "advocating & providing services for individuals with intellectual & developmental disabilities (IDD), and to actively support their full inclusion and participation, and I'll ask aspects of the community through our programs and services." This facility has catering services by the Culinary Arts Program, launching in May 2023: Vocational Retail Program (will provide an opportunity to shop brand new merch at great prices that'll support The Arc & the IDD community), launching in June 2023, Reagan Center & Banquet Hall Rental. This is all exciting news & I couldn't help but listen intently to Virginia & Chef Bev that I almost forgot my previous engagement with my sister at the Japanese Garden at 2 pm. They've created a masterpiece of ceviche for my brother & I as they shyly informed us of their lovely dish. It was so beautiful & flavorful. I couldn't eat it all but I tasted it & it was packed with such tang & zest!! The rest was for to go :)) I had to hastily make an exit to be at my next engagement with my sister at the CSULB Japanese Garden & apologize to Chef Bev but was met with another surprise!! They made a 5 flavor cookie in a tin with my bday wish on it & a candle, they sang ...I almost cried. Then they handed me with parting gifts-cookie making kits for Easter!! The day couldn't be more perfect! I can't wait to tell my friends later on our Zoom meeting for my friends child who is on the Spectrum. It's such a wonderful day. 5 stars all around & it's simply fabulous to learn that such a program & place exists! You guys ROCK! More power to you! Chef Bev & Chef Virginia, I am honored & humbled. I appreciate what you do & for what do you for the community. We shall meet again!
