I highly recommend this for anyone who is looking to volunteer in the community and help make a difference. It's a five year commitment - you get paired up with an eighth grader and you are their mentor until they graduate from high school. The goal of the program is to encourage them and provide guidance to help them along the way. You are required to spend a minimum of eight hours per month with your mentee - but scheduled program activities count towards those eight hours. The people who run the program - Carrie, Tina and Dara - are amazing. Carrie does such a good job pairing up mentors and mentees. Operation Jump Start has a great support system so you never feel like you are alone - they are there for you every step of the way. The program offers structured activities through out the year - and they vary from workshops to museum trips to Cirque du Soleil to rock climbing, etc. It's so much fun. I've done so many things I never thought I'd do like surfing and snowboarding - and going to the opera!

They offer mostly structured meetings to help the students. So as a mentor you don't always need to worry about planning what to do. As Kreuzensolo mentions, you do spend some of your own money, but the organization never asks you to spend anything you don't want to. It is completely up to you. There is never any pressure. As Mary mentions, the organization provides great support for the mentors and more importantly the students. Like any non-profit they suffer from being understaffed and underfunded. As a result some of the sessions could be better organized. However the effort put in by leaders such as Erik can't be questioned. All the mentors and staff genuinely want to see the students succeed and get to college. If you feel strongly about helping educate under served students, then I highly recommend checking the organization out.

They even have a cognitive class that I believe helps children transition into the school system. The classroom aids are so amazing and caring with the kiddos. I have to say that they are better than PTN. Although Pediatric Therapy Network emphasizes parent involvement it feel awkward to go to their classroom and be part of what your child is learning. On the other hand, Bethan Manor Foundation does emphasize this idea. I was there with with kiddo in classroom once in a while to see what he was learning and apply it at home. I can't express how much they help children transition into the school system. Oh they also have a person that goes and does workshops for parents. They range from Speech, behavior, self care, Transition meetings, IEP's , to mention a few of the workshops they provide. I GIVE IT 10+ STARS!!

It has now grown to over 1,000 people showing up for 4 hours on a Saturday to help beautify the city of Compton. I have volunteered over 30 times now. I do not say this to brag. I say this to show how dedicated myself and 1,000's more are to this cause. The Compton Initiative is committed to making a difference in the city of Compton for 40 years. We have been doing it 11 years so far. If you want a cool volunteer experience, join us. The more, the merrier! You can help paint a house, paint a school, paint a mural, pick up some trash or do some gardening. My son is in…read morethe autism spectrum and he started swimming lessons here, all the young adults teaching here are so nice and patient with him, my son was very afraid of being in a pool, everything that was water related was overwhelming for him, thanks to this swimming lessons my son actually was able to go to a water park for the first time, he's about to be 12 and this summer for the first time he was able to enjoy a water slide and small pools, Jax Cole is always making sure that kids are learning enough to move them to the next swimming level, and she's always so kind and attentive with all parents always trying to answer all of our questions making us feel welcomed into the YMCA aquatics community.

I recently has the pleasure of doing volunteer work at the LB Ronald McDonald house. The property…read moresits across LB Memorial Hospital, and the Millers Children Hospital. I have always heard about these places providing support to family members of their ill kids-but never knew to what extent. The house is staffed 24-7, and provides lodging in an almost resort like environment. Great care went into every detail of the house, to better provide services to their guest. Their are 19 guest rooms, and they were at 90 % occupancy. During my visit, another volunteer group had just made breakfast for the guest-while another group was cleaning doors and windows. My group got to help setting up the holiday decorations. Thanks to the many private donors, companies and people who volunteer their time to make this happen.

Staff is nice and available 24/7. They provide lunch or dinner depending on who donated that day. You are expected to give $25-35 donation per day if you wish. That's how they are funded. They have computer room, kids room, mini library, patio, play area, living room, game room, TV room, laundry and kitchen. Visitor can come visit you only in the common area from 9a-9p. They provide shuttle to go to the hospital (Need to schedule in advance). There is also free parking (they charge $5/day at the hospital). I'm thankful this place is here for us.
