It was Friday, and we're Catholic. So having previously done well with meatless Chinese food, we headed over to King Wah for some takeout. (Really surprised to learn they don't deliver but that's another topic.) A very clean & bright little restaurant that looked like it would be a pleasure to dine in, lovely wall art and little Chinese lanterns. A happy sign announced the password for the free Wi-Fi. (A much sadder one announced 'cash only.') Staff was cheerful and friendly and happy to answer questions, Unfortunately, there was one question I did not ask, and that was my downfall. My husband ordered Crab with Broccoli and I went for the Sea King (which was stated to contain shrimp, scallop and crab). Got some vegetable fried rice, plus two egg rolls too for good measure, and the wallet impact was very light indeed. Now, I know that crab is pricey, so we were not expecting big chunks of crab meat in a $9.00 dish -- I was expecting a reasonable amount of shredded crab meat mixed in with the sauce. What we got was some "imitation" stuff made of mystery fish, compounded together with some kind of fillers, and some red coloring added to give a resemblance to crab. The texture was like one of those green florist sponges when it's fully soaked -- thick and solid, and the taste was probably close to those sponges too. I admit it looked like crab, but as soon as we saw those huge chunks, we knew we were in trouble. My dish was somewhat more bearable as there was less of the non-crab. The scallops were very tiny bay scallops and not too many of them. The shrimp, fortunately, was the saving grace. The vegetables and sauce were tasty too, but that gross tasteless STUFF completely offset the positives. It was very offensive, too, that they have the audacity to call this stuff crab and not honestly state that it's the imitation stuff. Even then it would have been a fail as this was one of the poorer imitations. The egg rolls were really good, for which I'm grateful. The fried rice was average. Due to the positive reviews on other dishes, though, I believe we will give King Wah another shot one time with some beef, chicken or pork, cold noodles, egg fu young, etc. But seafood? NEVER. King Wah Chinese is probably the best Chinese like ever. The food is always fresh. The neighborhood is kind of sketchy of course, it's Hempstead, so expect Hempstead. However no one will bother you. I usually order a myriad of things from here, but I try to always get their chicken wings. Yummy yummy. Their fried plantain is good too. I also get the chicken and shrimp with broccoli and white rice. The only thing I don't like is that they don't accept cards or Apple/Samsung/Google Pay and they don't deliver. Those are two of the worst things. It's just an inconvenience. So if I don't have cash I have to go to the bank. Overall though, the food is good, I've never had a problem. read more

I'm a fan of King Wah. It's great that it's in a sketchy area and they have workers who speak Spanish! The tv is tuned to Spanish speaking television. It's a godsend compared to the fake out Chinese food that Hofstra University tries to dish up for Chinese conference patrons. Love the boneless ribs and chicken. Fried plantains are the savory and not sweet type. CASH ONLY! There are basic table booths (about 4 where at least 4 adults can be seated). Oh yeah for $5.50 you can get 1/2 Fried Chicken with either fried rice, fries, or fried plantains. They also have super delicacies like fried chicken gizzards if you are into that kind of thing. As far as it goes for a Chinese restaurant, King Wah is really good. The food is generally fresh and tasty. I've never had a bad experience with their food. The only thing that I don't like is that they don't take credit or debit cards and they don't deliver. There have been plenty of times I've been craving Chinese food and had to order from another Chinese restaurant because I didn't have cash on me at the time. There also isn't an ATM near to withdraw money. But definitely if you have cash, King Wah is probably the best Chinese food in Hempstead. read more

Ive been going here for a while and although the food is ok and budget friendly I will say that the boneless spare ribs taste funny, they taste different from the ribs on the bone and alot of other places I frequently visit. I just now stopped at this restaurant to give it another shot and after paying for my food and I saw a 2 black mice run from under the fridge to under the stoves they cook with, I will never come back here again and its a shame because it is very local and convenient for me. My go to Chinese take out. Have used them for at least 20 years when ever the mood strikes me. They have consistently prepared their dishes with fresh ingredients and without overcooking. NO MSG, the sauces aren't starchy. The shrimp fried rice has large shrimp. The portions and prices are decent. read more
