TST has managed to see the opening of several German establishments over last few years, so why not a few more? 尖東 has effectively become a western melting pot of establishments with waterfront views and rapidly pricey area. Overall, Brotzeit surprised me. Decent beers on tap, much of which are largely German and epic platters that will satiate any big eater, and much like the rest of their neighbors: a revamped interior with indoor and outdoor spaces. Be it a casual drink meetup or an alternative dinner option, this place just works. The staff is comprised of mainly local folks with a good command of English. As expected, their German is virtually non-existent, save for a few beer names and their prominent dishes. Overall, they're efficient and friendly, which is as much as one can ask for in HK. Western fare will not come cheap and the same applies here. The bathrooms are two floors up in the TST Center and the views of Hong Kong are somewhat obscured by the highway barricades, but it won't diminish a good weather night. Come thirsty and preferably with good company.

The pretzel bread was delicious too, and the pig knuckle was a hefty size that we could barely finished. We did know that it would be a meat heavy menu, but my friend wanted some salad, so we decided on the German sausage salad. Imagine our surprise when the dish came, two pump link of sausages accompanied by a teeny side - like two bite-ful - of frisee salad! Please, be more generous with the greens! There was a oompah band going around the tables entertaining us, and servers were dressed in German folk costumes, all creating a festive atmosphere. The menu seems to aim hard to be international - so if German food is not your thing, you can consider many options such as Thai salad, Malaysian beef shank, pesto pasta, curry chicken and more. Not sure if they are just trying to include all tourists, but I find it a bit weird.

Okay, I am obviously not talking about history so just let me cut to the chase - King Luwig BeerHall. I am completely aware of the fact that I am such a light-weight that I cannot drink that much, but once in a while I just let myself go for a bit (finger cross not as much). God knows how many times I have been here but I am still a fan of this place. The pork knuckles are definitely its signature dish here (of course it is slightly pricier than having than in Germany); however, the sausage platters to me seem rather ordinary and quite disappointing frankly speaking as people keep saying how good German sausages are, not here unfortunately. The scallop soup is very creamy and delicious as well. As for drinks, the last time I went there unfortunately I was kind of ill so I did not order beer, however I ordered one Mango whatever that does not have alcohol, while my friends ordered draughts of beers... bravo... the beer here generally is rather nice and not too strong flavoured so it is great for people who cannot drink that much. Also if it is your friend's birthday, please be prepared that the lead singer will sing him/her a happy birthday song. I am not a fan as it is rather embarrassing, but the atmosphere is definitely very cool (after a few glasses). It appears to me that King Luwig BeerHall has become quite a chain now in Hong Kong, I have tried the one in Tuen Mun and honestly, the one in Tsim Sha Tsui is definitely better in terms of the atmosphere. I strongly suggest that you should make a reservation as early as possible. Not that it will be full-house but more to do with the fact that you may not be able to watch the live band perform if you just walk-in as you will be sent to the farthest table and you can barely hear what they are singing.

I've always walked past this restaurant upon exiting the Kwun Tong - Sai Wan Ho ferry terminus, so…read morea friend and I finally decided to feed our curious minds and grab an afternoon bite at The Salted Pig. The environment was very cozy and homey. We were seated in a booth facing each other, with cushions on each side. As a music aficionado, I will give them 5 stars for great background music. I don't always remember a restaurant's choice of music, but when I do, it's a good sign in my book. There is currently one other place in the world that ranks highly for great restaurant music, and that's back in California. I almost felt like I was back in the US for a second. But this is a review about The Salted Pig in Hong Kong, so I will focus on that. Without the slightest bit of hesitation, my friend picked the fish and chips. Reminiscent of his college days, so no surprise from him there! As I always find myself craving Mexican food, I decided immediately on the pork quesadilla. They also have some Californian craft beer available - I picked out an Anchor Porter for him. :) The pork quesadilla arrived first. It was almost unrecognizable at first. Never had I seen quesadilla served with salad on top. It looked absolutely enticing in every way, the color of the salad, olives, sour cream and guacamole contrasting against the tortilla. The fish and chips quickly followed and it looked heavenly. The fish were beautifully "beer-battered", giving it a nice, signature puffed appearance. The taste test: We were at The Salted Pig, so I expected the tortillas to be sufficiently stuffed with pulled pork. I'm afraid I was a bit let down... The quesadillas were filled with about 90% American cheddar cheese and 10% pork. (Deducted one star because of this) Upon my first bite, I tasted only cheese and wondered where the pork was. So I lifted the top tortilla to see where the pork was, and my friend, perturbed by my action, gives me the strangest look that I can't help but burst out laughing, "I'm looking for the pork. It's a pork quesadilla right?!" The sour cream and olive combination didn't exactly work for me - both together, I found, overpowered the flavor of the quesadilla. Unfortunately, the guacamole didn't seem fresh to me - it was perfectly smooth with specks of tomato and contained no avocado chunks...hmm... Was it store-bought? Nevertheless, the fish and chips saved the day. Thank goodness! They were perfectly crispy and crunchy. I was about to help myself to some side salad when my friend takes a huge dollop of tartar sauce and starts smothering the piece of beer battered fish served on my plate. Thanks! Or as he said, "Tartar sauce is evil." More thanks! :) To wrap it up, I believe we had a pleasant dining experience, and look forward to trying other dishes!

All we ordered were the Trio of Sliders mini burgers, and a mac & cheese. The decor was certainly very nice, and like most restaurants in Soho East, it got this semi-open door setting, and we were lucky to get the table just next to the street. Breeze wind and strong enough A/C, so definitely not a bad choice. Apart from the food, I also tried to order a craft beer (yes, you see how I'm so into craft beer just from the last few reviews...). I picked Dirty Bastard, a rather memorable name that I wouldn't forget. Ooops, I picked the only one craft beers (out of four) that has run out, and the staff proceeded to give me another menu that with the updated list. The staff insisted that the Anchor Porter was the same as Dirty Bastard as they were both dark beer. Ummm... Stout is technically dark too, if you don't really know your beers. Anyway, Porter was not bad, but its 5.6% ABV was definitely not as strong as Dirty Bastard's 8.5%. The Trio of Sliders certainly rescued the star I was about to deduct from them. Okay pulled pork burger, amazing beef + bacon + cheese burger and excellent pork belly burger. That's solid 2.5/3 good. Mac & cheese was just a mac & cheese. I don't remember the last mac & cheese that's made bad, so it's a pretty save choice on my side.

Located between the N1 and N2 exits on the MTR, Biergarten stands out amongst through the Podium Plaza lineup of international establishments. It was the very first German find and eventually became my most visited one as well. I appreciate the bits of authenticity they've put into the business all the way from their signage to their menu, which is listed in German and English. The ambiance feels distinctly pub-like and some of the staff is German speaking, which I've found in most of the bartenders. If only everyone was wearing lederhosen, this could be the ultimate (but tight space!) Oktoberfest destination. In general, I enjoy drinking here. They have a good selection of beers, German and others, on tap and available in bottle / can form. There are plenty of stools at the bar and front area is open enough to call this place outdoor friendly. The bartenders make for interesting conversation and are adept at recommending quality beers. If there is any fault, it would be the food. The menu is broken down to soups, salads and classic mains, there is even a dedicated section to cold / hot sausages. And while most things are certainly reminiscent of dishes I've had in Deutschland, none have captured the magic of anything I've had. This is asking a lot for Hong Kong obviously, where western food tends to be lackluster and sadly the case applies here as well (specifically: the goulash, wurst plate, knuckle hocks, meat loaf, schnitzel). It wasn't all bad of course, I did appreciate the mash potatoes. Sadly, a delicious side does not make up for a string of mediocre mains. Given the major lack of presence amongst locals and the general feel of the place, it goes without saying Biergarten is a likely option for many non-Chinese tourists. Their sister location Fass (https://www.yelp.com/biz/biergarten-fass-%E9%A6%99%E6%B8%AF) has outperformed them in almost every way, so if the food quality matters (which at this price point, I don't see why it wouldn't), then that would be the better alternative.

However, fast forward to 2016 and now Hongkongers seem to be completely spoiled for choice (and I'm very jealous)!!! Craft Brew & Co was probably my favourite of the many craft beer bars we visited. As you'd expect with this type of bar its located in the hip and popular So-Ho area. You're gonna find plenty of bars selling bog standard lager around here, but not Craft Brew. These guys really stand out with their rather aggressive marketing of, "Craft not Crap" and you won't find any boring beers in here. To be honest these guys had some outstanding beer on when I was in. I was drinking their very own Kung Fu Lager and Summer Ale as I'd never seen them in the UK. Both were great examples of a modern, hoppy beer. They were super cold and refreshing, not cheap, (as you would expect) but totally worth it in my opinion. With its simple wooden tables and decoration, this is definitely like a craft beer bar you'd get in Europe. The music was pretty hit and miss (I mean Take That, really??) but it kinda made for a fun night. The staff in Craft Brew were really great and allowed me to sample several different beers before finding the ones I was after.
