The restaurant is on Kings Norton Green, a lovely area which is sadly neglected when it comes to good places to eat (Mollie's Cafe is an exception). Obviously the fine people of Kings Norton agree with me as on the two occasions we have been the restaurant has been bursting at the seams. The decor is very modern, service is good, the menu is extensive (i mean extensive - lots of chef's specials) and the food superb. Cost is very reasonable - a meal for 5 with starters, mains, sides, poppadoms and drinks (a mixture of alcoholic and non alcoholic) came to £133 so less than £30 each. This has quickly become a Go To place for those of us living on the south-west side of the city and it beats the curry houses in Stirchley hands down. They also do a Sunday buffet for £9.95 per person - havent been to that so cant comment on it though!

I believe there is an upstairs dining room as well, but I haven't been sat up there yet. I have tried a few Indian restaurants since moving to Brum and Imlees is the only one I really like. I've dined here 3 times now and we are always greeted at the door. The restaurant is not licensed so you can take in your own beer/wine/etc. Across the street are two shops in case you get thirsty and forget to bring your own. The menu seems to have a good variety; lots of starters to choose from and a page and a half of mains. The poppadoms always taste fresh. There are 3 different dips served with the poppadoms. There is an onion chutney, a spicy red dip, and a mint dip. I'm still new to Indian food so I'm not the best with my descriptions. For this visit, I tried chicken tikka for a starter and Bagaara chicken for a main. The chicken dishes were both flavourful! The Bagaara was a tad too spicy for me. I usually choose Butter chicken (which is fantastic) but decided to be a bit more adventurous this visit. In between the starter and main you are served sorbet to cleanse the palate. We also had some delicious naan and pilau rice. As far as price, Imlees is quite affordable. It offers take out too if you aren't up for formal dining. Anyone finding themselves hungry in Moseley should give them a try!

Anyway on first impressions it has a very luxurious facade which cajoled me in as though 3 wishes awaited me inside. It is a very slick restaurant and they do a very good job of representing this with their exterior, this impression was only supported by their staff who were incredibly attentive and friendly. Somehow it feels as though Imlees has been part of Moseley for years, it has a very established feeling to it and they seem to have acquired a very loyal customer base despite being one of the newer restaurants on the parade. The food was some of the best Indian food I've ever had. I had to compare their chicken korma with a my catalogue of previously consumed chicken kormas, and I must say I think it was the best one I've had. Imlees provides an impeccable dining experience, so be kind to yourself and go there.

Service is surprisingly prompt and the staff are friendly, though not so friendly it gets in the way of the quick service. The prices are at the cheaper end of the curry house price range, starting at about 5.50/6 pounds for a main course and about 1.50/2 pound for side dishes. There are higher quality curry houses in Birmingham, but these will undoubtedly tax your wallet a lot harder than Khanum, there are also cheaper curry houses but with with lower quality food. The one criticism I have is that the restaurant is a little cramped, but apart from this Khanum is a restaurant I would recommend to curry fans.

As for the decor, it's not my choice of colours and the painting is very rough around the edges. The music they play is pretty standard Indian background music that must be on a tape loop. One song sounds like a version of The Irish Rover by The Pogues, so listen out for that. I wonder if Shane MacGowan has eaten here?
