For the price, it was absolutely worth the outing, and we appreciated the opportunity to slow down and enjoy a little family adventure. The station was cute, parking was fantastic, and picking up our preordered tickets was easy. The gift shop was very reasonably priced, and there were a couple of booths to browse in the gravel lot. Looking out the train windows at the animals and lovely fall leaves was a highlight, a simple, enjoyable experience to share with a little one. I especially appreciate that this is a completely volunteer-run operation. The volunteers were very nice and dressed in adorable seasonal outfits. Their time and effort make outings like this possible, and that deserves recognition! The area where I would love to see some improvement is the seasonal atmosphere. Our train car had just a couple of light-up pumpkins, so it didn't feel particularly decorated for fall. The field where we stopped had pumpkins scattered around, but very little additional decoration. Beyond one or two photo spots on the train platform, we didn't find festive backdrops for family pictures. After visiting, I better understood why there seem to be relatively few photos online showcasing the train decorations... there simply weren't many decorated areas to photograph. We also would have enjoyed some interaction during the ride, especially for the children. Although the volunteers were welcoming before boarding, we didn't see them in our car once we were underway. We asked about an opportunity for little ones to see the main engine area, but as far as we could determine from the staff, that wasn't available. Overall, my four stars reflect the excellent value, easy logistics, friendly volunteers, and lovely ride. A few more decorations and opportunities for children to engage would make this affordable fall outing even more memorable. We've also booked the Polar Express ride and are looking forward to it! With its considerably higher ticket price, we're hopeful for a more immersive holiday experience, with festive decorations, engaging characters, and more entertainment for the children. We would love to see this charming setting come alive with holiday magic!

We were in town for the weekend for other activities, and we decided to do this as a tourist activity as well. We took the last train of the day, so unfortunately we did not get to tour the museum as we were running late, but the train ride was amazing. The steam engine train is not running right now, which was a bummer, but they still run rides on a diesel engine train. We had a very funny conductor that kept us entertained. The ride was very peaceful and tranquil and on an older train so we appreciated the tranquility. There were not many people on the train with us, just two other couples. We were almost running late and the employee met us at the coach to give us our tickets, which was appreciated. The ride included pictures of the Chehalis River, scenery, wildlife, and more. The train and coach were definitely older, so we appreciated that classic vibe. I do know they also have special event dinner rides and such as well that they host several times per year. Overall, I definitely recommend the Chehalis railroad tour. It was a great experience!

Two BIG thumbs up to the Discover! Children's Museum in Centralia. Not to be confused with the…read moreother review that's posted on this site, this Children's Museum is located at 415 N. Pearl Street in Centralia and they are open Wednesday - Sunday from 10:00am - 5:00pm (with the last admission at 4:15pm). Admission is $10/person. Now ... onto the review. My two boys love going here -- so much so, that we purchased a membership that has already paid for itself! We live in Centralia and had driven up to the children's museum in Olympia; and while that one is much, much bigger, it's wonderful to have a smaller version right here in town. The kids literally spend hours playing here and there's plenty to keep them engaged and having fun. Their favorites are the super large Wooden Train Layout and the massive collection of Legos! They go back and forth between those two centers and love imagining and building. Other play learning centers include a child-sized grocery store, veterinarian office, and TV camera station that superimposes the kids on a variety of backgrounds. There also are lots of dress up costumes to complete the scene. Additionally, there is a detailed science station complete with child-sized lab and a dinosaur dig table! Inside a barn-like structure, the kiddos can play a series of games in which the "keyboard" or controls are displayed on the floor and they need to step on images to play. Up front, there is a smaller toddler sized space with cushions and play things; and in the back there is a music room with a piano, percussion, and other instruments. The museum also hosts weekly Wacky Science Wednesdays, in which the kids can be a part of highly engaging learning activities that focus on a variety of science topics. Check out their website for more details and a list of events. Lastly, the staff are very friendly and focused on fun for the kids. Parking and accessibility is totally easy and they even offer rentals for family celebrations, homeschool groups, and birthday parties! One thing to note ... they do not allow food inside, so you'll need to head out for snacks or lunch. But, your admission is good for the day, so you can come back after eating. :-) I highly recommend the Discover! Children's Museum in Centralia! You won't regret it.

What a great experience and a gem of a place, here in downtown Chehalis! We had driven past it…read moremany times and never really stopped in. Decided to make the plunge a couple of weeks ago and boy am I glad we did! It is an old, renovated train station/depot building - that's now a museum to celebrate and remember the bygone eras of the towns and county. There are multiple displays and exhibits that highlight the many chapters of Lewis County's history and culture, from the time of Native Americans and early pioneers all the way to 1950's. It is filled with actual items from each era (tools, appliances, clothes, maps, merchandise, etc). It really does much to bring history alive and allow visitors to see with their own eyes, and not just in photographs, what people used and lived with. The highlight of the museum, though, is of course the trains! All the way towards the back of the building is a ginormous electric model train set! It's set up to mimic the geography and landscape of Lewis Co. and is so captivating. There are two separate sets and each actually work with the push of a button. There is also a medium sized wooden train set for the kids to enjoy. My two boys absolutely love it!! At just $5 per adult and free for the littles, it's a bargain! I highly recommend the Lewis County Historical Museum for a wonderful time with great fun and learnings for the whole family!!
