I really wanted to like the food here but unfortunately that was not the case. BB and I were in the mood for some BBQ so we got on Yelp and found this place which is close by to our home. I have actually seen this place on Yelp for years but never got around to trying it out. When I put the address in Waze, it was funny because it led us to Bowlegged BBQ, which we have been to several times. This place is about 100 yards away from Bowlegged in a small seperate plaza. The employees were all friendly and service was great. Great low prices. That is what the two star rating is for. The food....where to start. I ordered beef rib dinner with two sides; and chose collard greens and mac salad. I asked for the spicy bbq sauce on the side. BB ordered rip tips (only available in pork) dinner; mild sauce, her sides were collard greens and potato salad. The beef ribs and pork rib tips were both thrown into the microwave (red flag #1). When one of the employees opened the fridge to get our sides, I noticed that the potato salad and mac salad were both store bought variants (red flag #2). The place is cash only. We paid and brought the food home. I opened my food only to realize they did not include any sauce on the side. I sampled the collard greens, they were terrible. Bitter with a weird taste without any taste of rendered fat. Mac salad was about what you would expect from the supermarket. Next I tried the beef ribs. The ribs were tough and some of the seasoning was all smushed together in one area, making one of the bites way too overpowered, flavor wise. BB tried one bite of the pork tips, said it was tough and smelled weird, and did not try any of the sides. She was one unhappy camper. The portions, service, and price are all great. The food, however, was not good in my opinion and I will not be returning. The reviews are all over the place though and some people swear by this bbq so your mileage may vary. read more

Kim's is a block away from Bowlegged BBQ so this area has a nice variety of bbq options.  Meats are smoked with mesquite wood.  I ordered a rack of beef ribs and I loved the smoky aroma and flavor.  I chose the mild sauce which was mostly sweet with a little spice.  Next time I think I'll go with no sauce as I generally prefer just dry rub.  The owner got my order out quick and it was only $15 with tax for a full rack of ribs.  I had enough food for lunch and dinner.  :-) 2nd visit I tried a rack of pork ribs with no sauce.  A full rack of ribs here is a huge amount of food and should last me at least 3 meals.  Great deal for $20 including tax.  Ribs were tender and juicy except for the end piece.  I loved the light smoke flavor and the mild savory flavor of the dry rub.   Kim's Bar-B-Que is a small spot but you get lots of food for your money and the owner is nice. read more

They're casual about their hours so it's a good idea to call ahead to ensure they're open & have what you want. Wilbert (married to Kim) is the guy at the counter. CJ is the huge bear of a guy who throws everything on the smoker slightly after the crack of dawn. CASH & Takeout ONLY. A full rack of excellent beef or spare ribs is $25 out the door. Hood certified, gem in the rough. One of the coolest places I've been in SD. There's no frills, fluff or BS. Just slangin' traditional BBQ comfort food for a hell of a deal. Came here and got excited once I saw the building. More excited as I walk in seeing the place and the stripped down menu. I could taste everything by the visuals before actually smelling and tasting the beautiful home cooking BBQ style they're doing here. I ordered the ribs, collards, yams, cornbread and added a link to go. I had a big woman in front of me that started to get irritated for whatever reason. I knew right away she wasn't going to keep her mouth shut and give the gentleman behind the counter a piece of her mind. She started giving the guy some sh#t busting his chops. He wasn't having any of it and gave it back to her in a nice way. She actually appreciated him standing his ground with some humor. You only see that stuff every once in awhile and appreciate it. Ribs are good. Not gonna blow your mind, but good to scratch that itch you had and fill your belly. Collards are respectable. I lived in the south for a bit and have a great appreciation for people who can cook collards properly. Yams were dead on and delicious. The sweet overload with those and the ribs made me take a risk on collards. Cornbread was par, but it was late. Link may have been my favorite. They Nuke your food before giving it to you in a styrofoam container. $7.07 for (3) "Beef Rib" rejects that have meat that is close to the bone, perfect for your dog. Reason for the one star. You get what you pay for obviously. I should have known better. The "Sides" are all store bought as indicated by the toothless man dispatching the "food" at the counter. Worst place ever never buying anything from here ,first and last time. I asked for a beef sandwich and I came home with ribs with no meat just bones with bbq sauce slathered in it and fat it almost looked like someone's left overs I'm am so angry that I was ripped off by this I gave my dog the bones. Hours of operation on Yelp and Google are 11-8. Called at 1150 "Are you open today?" "Yes" was the answer received. Show up at 1210, sign on the door says will return at noon. Peek around the side and an older man says "We ain't open yet". I say " I just called and you said you were " "You asked if I was open today,not open right now" WHAT THE...... If I call and ask if you're open today I'm assuming that since your hours are listed as 11-8 that means you're open. WHO calls and asks if you're open today and isn't thinking or reffering to your POSTED HOURS. As a black person I try and support black business when I can, but time and time again I'm disappointed with what I get. So I just went to Phil's who were open, friendly and tasty. I was hosting a barbecue for out of town relatives a few weeks after I happened to pass by this place, so I decided to try them out on my own in case I wasn't up for cooking myself. This is really a take out kind of place anyway. I went in and ordered a full rack of pork ribs and about four bones of beef ribs. I was lucky enough to get the pork ribs right off the pit. The lovely old guy politely apologized for having to go back outside to get them but that couldn't have made me happier. Both meats were perfectly seasoned, but the pork ribs were actually better. I was impressed with the flavor of both without sauce, of course, but the beef ribs were a little tough and hard to chew. I'd go back by for sure, but I would have to get something really fresh or brisket sandwiches. The prices here are really reasonable for BBQ, so when I eventually find out what they make best, I'll visit them for that. It's funny to read the reviews for this restaurant. They are all over the place. I am not sure what people are eating here to rate a 4 or 5. The place is really small with like two seats at a counter inside. Their are 3 tables outside with some chairs but your better getting your food to go. This is my second time here with my first visit several years ago. The food was not that great before and has not really improved. I ordered a beef rib dinner. The place is small so you can see the food being prepared. Like some reviews have mentioned, the ribs are placed in a microwave to warm them up. A microwave in a BBQ joint? The macaroni was really good and the beans decent. For a BBQ joint, the sides tasted better than the beef ribs. There was not much meat on the ribs and they tasted overcooked.
