Stopped at Kilwins Ice Cream yesterday after dinner in downtown Wheaton - I was greeted immediately by the staff and my ice cream order was taken right away. I ordered the double scoop of Double Fudge and Original Vanilla on a Sprinkle waffle cone. The ice cream shop has a nice candy shop ambiance because they sell more than just ice cream. Wheaton Kilwin's is our favorite in the area. Ever since my kids were in the stroller, a trip to Kilwin's from our own suburb (15 min away), has been a special day. We still go several times a year before big candy holidays: Halloween, Christmas, Valentines and always love it. My favorite thing about Kilwin's is the hand made caramel and freshly dipped apples. The apple pie apple is the absolute best! Everyone has their favorite variation. If you're a fudge person, they have many flavors. Ice cream too. There's honestly something for everyone. My kids love the chocolate dipped cookies, marshmallows, and pretzel rods all beautifully decorated with the season in mind. In the bins in the middle of the store, they have tins and bags of brittle, hot chocolate, foil wrapped chocolates, gummies. Great for gifts or just a marvelous treat. You can't go wrong here! And if you don't like caramel, fudge, chocolate, or even ice cream...I'm concerned about you. We've been to other Kilwin's that were a bit of a let down only because Wheaton sets the bar higher. Welcome to 2023 Price Gouging! Ordered a chocolate shake ($11) and 7 chocolate candies ($16 for 3 pecan turtles, 3 coconut bites, 2 mocha truffles). All of it tasted just average. I mean, if you're going to pay $11 for a milkshake it better be one special milkshake! Nope! The wait was long and the service was slow... I wouldn't have complained about that, but the prices just set me off. Last time I ever go to a Kilwins, and recommended you don't either just in principle. We got this chocolate as wedding favors for our guests back in 2016, and I still think about how delicious it was and how much everyone loved it to this day-- so of course, when we came back to IL for a family reunion we had to stop in and grab a bunch for the big get-together! Stop in if you're nostalgic for a solid ice cream cone or snack. They have a great location, right in the heart of downtown Wheaton, and ample seating inside and out (if you want to stay, that is, as opposed to strolling around wonderful downtown indulging in your treat). I knew we were in a great spot as soon as I we entered and were offered a sample of the delicious fudge. We had come for the ice cream but they make it very difficult not to get anything else. They were also patient with us as we hemmed and hawed over the numerous flavors and options. Somehow we were able to stick with just ice cream but we were more than satisfied. Their ice cream is very tasty! On top of it all they don't gouge on prices, which is nice to see. You can get in and out without dropping a ton of cash (which is especially important if you have children in tow). Kilwins is not for the casual sweet-eater. Be warned that I am not a real fan of chocolates or one who gorges on a pint of ice cream at a sitting. We stopped-in to get three ice cream cones and the husband picked-up three small chocolate bags and the total was $57!!!! Cherry cordials alone were $17 for a tiny box. The ice cream is HUGE (and is like $6 for a scoop). I swear, I don't know how people eat it all. I wish there was a model of how much one scoop was, because I would have told them "give me like 1/4 cup and just charge me the same". Brought the kids in this week in a rainy night (i.e. not a busy night) and the entire staff were rude teenagers each more irritated than the next to be serving us. The icing on the cake for us irritating the staff was asking if they could do half vanilla ave half chocolate in a small size cup. Apparently that's a ridiculous request. Ok so this place has some delicious stuff to sample and no doubt there is so much care that they put into their sweets. Here you can get such things as marzipan delights at 60 calories a pop (as the sign says) or chocolate covered twinkies or chocolate covered caramel marshmallows - just Devine. But there is a price - which is why my rating is low. A pound or chocolate raspberries were $37 a pound or $4 for the chocolate covered marshmallow. Hard for me to justify buying these things for kids in my family. Also - they should work on their front of the House area for people to sit and enjoy coffee w their deserts. Cute little ice cream shop in downtown Wheaton!! I've been to their location in St. Joe, Michigan but this was my first visit here. We were welcomed right away when we walked in. The girl offered fudge or ice cream samples. I sampled the fudge but decided to go with an ice cream cone. The chocolate & peanut butter flavor was VERY good!! um.. I have a confection to make... I feel like I'm fudgin' just a bit on my review, I'm being pulled in all directions. I love the Kilwins in Lake Geneva (Wisconsin) not a little bit, but a lot! It's a five star slam dunk, we go every day that we are there. So I'm pre-disposed to wanting to love this one too. I also love Graham's in Geneva (Illinois) Not only do they make great candy, but they are a local business. However, I only "like" their store in Wheaton. The one in Wheaton is charming and small but isn't the same. I hope that they can both survive in Wheaton, but I'm not sure there is enough business for both of them. I'm also concerned about Tates Ice Cream Shop. Having three really good places for ice cream in Downtown Wheaton seems like overkill, plus DQ!. I suppose that's not really for me to worry about. It is great to see new businesses coming into downtown Wheaton. One of the nice things about Kilwins is that there is frequently candy making going on in the window, it adds to the overall ambiance and provides a little entertainment too. Kilwins is still working the kinks out, we went on Easter Sunday and it wasn't very crowded, they just haven't figured everything out yet... so the processes are less than perfect (handed me my ice cream with nothing wrapped around the cone using bare hands, then handled my money.... hoping she washed her hands after) My wife had the same experience with a different woman that helped her. The girl that helped me was very nice and helpful, I tasted ice cream and I tasted fudge, I bought a double scoop (cake batter and cookies and cream) on a waffle cone (they make 'em fresh) and two types of fudge (salted caramel and chocolate peanut butter) I shared the fudge with Lisa but she had to get her own ice cream cone! So pretty much, I was in heaven.. glad that we were walking that day (so was Chaps the wonder dog) It's a beautiful store and the location is great, I'm thinking they'll work their way around to a five star level because the basics are so good. The store opening has generated a lot of excitement; I was there on a Saturday and it was a mob scene. There's a lot of room, and boxed candy for sale as well as candy by the piece and ice cream. I really like the setup; there's more room than, say, Graham's, but the staff, while friendly, is still getting their bearings. (When I spoke to the woman making up my box of chocolate, she just said "uh huh" whenever she didn't understand what I said - "I'd like my receipt." "Uh huh." "My receipt?" "Oh, there isn't one.") The chocolates themselves are oversweet and a bit disappointing, though if you like your chocolate really sweet, you might like it. Most are available in chocolate and milk. They also have salt water taffy, which looks intriguing, but it contains gelatin (taffy shouldn't include this) so I didn't buy any. Ice cream might be fine; didn't try it. Service for chocolates is a bit slow as the staff figures out what they're doing and due to there being at least three different prices per pound. Overall, if for some reason you don't like Graham's, check this place out once the excitement has died down. read more

I was excited for this shop. The smell of chocolate filled the place and hits you right when you walk in and makes you instantly in the mood for chocolate... I get it, it's hand made chocolates and treats and it's pricier for that reason. I don't honestly mind coming to a shop like this for a special get well treat or a congratulations treat. Mind you, one pound of turtles are priced at $38. (they are heavy so that doesn't get you that many turtles friends) They are good chocolates but no chocolate is worth that ticket price to me. I found everything I ate to be overly sweet. A Family member of mine who loves chocolate told me it's rich... But the dark chocolate didn't even strike me as very dark because of the sugar level. I normally like the darker chocolates for that deep less sweet flavor. I do believe you need to try them for yourself to decide. Just a thought... As a person who isn't over the moon on these kind of goodies maybe I'm not the judge. I just think rationally. If I (or anyone else) can go to a grocery store and get a full bouque of flowers, and a box of chocolates for less than a small bag of turtles at this place which is out of the way to stop at, why bother? I'd just stop at the corner grocery for icecream too. It's cheaper at even my high end grocer. These days they have vegan ice cream, organic non gmo ice cream, and every flavor you can think up. To the owner of the store: I came in to the store to get icecream. I asked for 1/2 a scoop of vanilla and 1/2 a scoop of chocolate to make one scoop. The person behind the counter straight forward said that they do not do as the owner of the store doesn't allow it. I said I will pay for the whole 2 scoops of icecream except that I don't want that much, but I have no problem paying the whole amount. The person behind the counter said she can't do it again and demostratively just walked away. The cashier person repeated the same thing stating that "they are the middle men and they just follow owner's rulles". I don't understand what the problem is when I specifically said that I will pay for the whole 2 scoops or have kids size? I was the only customer in the store, so it's not like they were so busy and overwhelmed with customers. Either the staff is not properly trained or needs further education in customer service. So I have never purchased anything at Kilwins until yesterday. First, my cousin and I walked in and asked for a mocha iced drink, as advertised. The staff was friendly enough, but they denied that both of us could get one each, due to "only being able to make one because each one requires 3 shots." I had no clue what that meant and they couldn't explain that either. Why advertise something you are unable to make? So we decided upon chocolate shakes, even though mocha drinks appealed more to us. Now, the prices of their items that are behind the counter are listed on two sheets of paper displayed in small print, in a plastic stand on top of the ice cream cooler. When I quickly scanned down, despite the prices seeming to be high, I felt that a treat now and then for $6.50 would be ok. I assumed a regular shake couldn't be more than that. I should have asked first what the price of a chocolate shake would be. Well, low and behold after they made it, we learned each was $9.99! They pulled out the lowest quality milk too from a 1 gallon container to make the shake. This better be good, I thought. As we walked out near closing with our shakes in hand, I couldn't help but notice how bitter it was and not enjoyable it at all. They were barely drinkable due to how bitter they tasted. I am a huge dark chocolate fan, but this was something different. I didn't appreciate the uppity, fake and micromanaging attitude from the owner either. Those poor employees! For $9.99, that shake should have been made with organic milk. So, yesterday marks the first and last time I will purchase from Kilwins.
