I like that it's conveniently located, you can get in and out, it's never crowded, nice meat selection. Prices are a little high. Someone described it as a suburban version of a Bodega. That's pretty accurate. The workers don't look happy, but they are busy. There's usually 2 cashiers up front. The younger lady that looks to be in her 30's will at least speak. The other cashier looks like a sweet old grandma, but is surprisingly rude. In my experience, she doesn't speak when I say hi, I'll ask for a bag and she'll place it on the belt instead of my outstretched hand, she doesn't say thank you. At first I thought maybe she's just tired and having a bad day. Nope. Been in the store several times since and noticed grandma picks and choose who she's going to bless with a little customer service! I've seen her smile and talk up some, while stone face ignoring others. Even if grandma is a little crotchety at times, I am glad to see she's still out here being active and working. read more

I hate food shopping. Now, my definition of food shopping is probably different from yours. Since I eat out most of my meals (thank you, Yelp), my grocery needs are fairly limited. Just the basics: milk, yogurt, honey, fruit and that's about it. Since the whole large chain supermarket thing annoys the crap out of me, I search for solutions. Convenience stores are fine but if you're looking for produce, they're not going to cut it. So those times when I need to stock up without really stocking up, I hit up Kilroy's. They are a small but well stocked mini supermarket that also sells booze. Their prices are.....Well, I don't really know because it's the only place I ever shop. I assume that they're higher than say, Shop Rite but I'm not sure and for me, convenience is number 1. Parking is easy and they are never, ever crowded. Worth mentioning is that if you're looking for a deli counter or elaborate prepared foods, look elsewhere; Maywood Market for example. If you need variety and like to pick and choose amongst multiple brands and sizes, again, not your best choice. But if you need to get the basics, they really can't be beat. I've always had great affection for Kilroy's Wonder Market, which seems pretty much the same to me today as it was when our family first began going there in the late 1950s. (As a kid, I especially liked the fact that any time you stopped in, you could get a free pretzel. And if as an adult I was no longer as fond of pretzels as I was when I was a kid, I could still get a kick out of seeing kids happily enjoying that longstanding Kilroy's "free pretzel" tradition.) It's a small grocery store, well-stocked. The produce is fresh. The meat is fresh (and freshly cut). And I've always found the staff to be friendly. They may say, "It's nice to see you again," and they mean it. And I'm surprised how often I've run into friends while shopping there, over the years. There's always parking, very close to the store. It's easy to find things in this well-laid out little store. And--I really like this--there's never a line at the checkout counter. So you can get in and out quickly, if you want, with no waiting at the checkout. The prices are a bit higher than at the much-bigger chain supermarkets. And if you're looking for the cheapest cuts of meat, you simply won't find them here. But what they do sell is of good quality. And the overall atmosphere has won them a loyal customer base. They've been in business at the same spot since 1916. read more

Visiting family in the area and stopped in Kilroy's for a few items. I think the only other people who wanted to be in there LESS than me, where the people working in there. Wow, talk about bad attitude, check-out girl looked like she was ready to slit her wrists. Didn't look at me or say hi, thank you, etc.. Reminded me of being at a Gristede in NYC. Kilroy's is a local institution. But it is poorly managed. When the founder was alive it was well run. It was friendly. The founder's heirs were poor managers and had no idea how to deal with the general public. Treating people in a positive and friendly way is not too hard a concept. Yet it seems to elude the management of Kilroys. That is why I hardly patronize it. Convenient? Yes. Prices. on the higher end, 1 thing I do like - the pretzel barrel tradition. read more

Is there still a place for a small to medium size grocery store in an era of megasupergiant chains? Yeah, and Kilroy's says "THIS is the way to run a local supermarket." Located close to downtown Glen Rock, Kilroy's carries everything customers need in the way of foodstuffs at reasonable prices. For some shoppers, that's all they need, and that's OK. That said, it doesn't have the exotic selection of a Whole Foods or the wide variety of a Stop and Shop. As a smaller grocery store it has an advantage over some of the larger chains, for, with a smaller floor space, its managers and employees can monitor selections and freshness better than in a larger facility. Although it doesn't have the pricing power of larger chains its prices aren't too different. It loses a star for the slightly limited scope of its selection and the fact that it seems crowded everytime I'm in there. Maybe, though, that's a sign of how much people in Glen Rock and Ridgewood apperciate what Kilroy's offers. read more

I haven't really been in there in awhile with time to just walk around. I was able to do that last week and was pleasantly surprised. They just keep adding to their selection and are fully stocked. They now have a few different kinds of organic/greek yogurt, the kefir my son drinks, and various other organic/natural items I'd normally think to look for in a bigger supermarket elsewhere. Though, the best thing- there are now signs saying they are carrying ravioli from Vitamia. If you've never had Vitamia ravioli and sauces, you're missing out. I don't know if they're going to carry the sauces but Vitamia vodka sauce is amazing. Kilroy's also has awesome cut fruit and for some reason, the strawberries and grapes they sell are better than from anywhere else. I am usually all over Bergen and am at all different markets depending on where I am at the time. But I have to say, Kilroy's is in it to compete. I didn't find their prices any higher than some bigger markets. Pathmark, not that far down Maple Ave from Kilroy's, has raised their prices dramatically in the past year. If I can stay in town to buy food, I'd happily do that. I was just really impressed with everything they're carrying now. read more

Nice place, they have a lot of good quality items. (Also a liquor license) They could have a wider selection of produce and meats though. Bit more pricey than the big box stores and they offer less. Staff is typically friendly, though I did have a run in with one cashier that was very inappropriate. Will be a return customer to support local business. But there are better grocery stores in the area. read more

A great place to get a few things if you don't want to go to a bigger grocery store. People are very nice. The place is extremely clean. Prices are pretty decent for being such a small place. It is easy to find parking. read more

I Was here the other day and all I can say it's sad I was getting 4 racks of rib for a party I was having. I asked some kid were they were he was very nice and helped me even tho he was in trying then he went in the back and the kid who was trying him was nothing but rude and bad mouthing him to a worker.... Kilroy's a really convenient, local, family-run supermarket in Glen Rock. From when I was a kid until today, my family has shopped here for their really fresh produce and good selection of kitchen and cooking essentials. We always get solid watermelon, cantaloupe, cherries, blueberries, and strawberries there. read more

When you go in it's like you're stepping back in time, but for convenience you can't beat it. The prices may be a bit higher, but, for the most part it's negligible. The ability to run in, get what you need and get out is huge!!! It's quick and the generally have whatever you need. read more

Kilroy's has been a steadfast business that has been there as long as I can remember. After coming off the 164 bus stop, it's close enough to walk to and grab a few groceries before going home. Yes, the prices are higher than the big markets, but it is hard to compete against the big companies, and I am willing to pay the extra to keep landmark establishments around that have been around since my childhood. I love the small business feel that downtown Glen Rock gives, and Kilroy's is definitely a cornerstone in that environment. read more

What can one say? This was our second trip here. We wanted a store where we could get the "fillers" for our dinners at home. You know...salads, tomatoes, sodas, eggs and the like without the hassle of going to the local ShopRite and Whole Foods....well that idea goes down the drain after the way we were treated by the older female cashier yesterday morning...not even a thank you..and don't ever ask her for a bag. All I can say is I agree with the postings of the Yelp postings of John H (4/2/09) and Robert M (2/9/15) and we'll take the $70 a week we would have spent on "fillers" and spend it back at Whole Foods and ShopRite. Let's see $70x52=$3640 a year. I can't wait to hear small business owners whine on TV about how tough they have it....when you drive money away I don't want to listen to your "whine and jeeze" party. Hey guys...NEWSFLASH...it's a two way street...you want people to pay more at your store than they do at the chain stores and the "highway" you can only offer a more pleasant shopping experience. An ok place to shop with a decent selection of products. This one young man in the deli section was incredibly nice to me. It's the little things like that which keep me coming back. I remember that his name was Matt, since he bothers to remember my name when I come through as well. Sadly, he goes to school as well and probably can't afford much despite the cheap price of the school due to being a minimum wage employee. Give the nice ones a raise!! read more

Fresh produce, fresh cuts of meat. Fish is a little iffy but still good if you thaw it correctly. Cashiers are the friendliest in town. And still has the famous Pretzel Barrel at checkout. Great service all around. read more
