Madaket - Timber on the bay

A nice tour around the northern (Arcata) bay. The tour was billed as "birds & Eco" but I think it…read morewas the same historical narration given on all tours. She did makes some general bird references, told a few personal stories and lots about the history and some current factoids. All in all a great way to spend $30 and 1.5 hours. BTW - we were told to arrive early if obtaining a seat was important when we called to ask about the tour. There did seem to be limited bench seating. We chose to sit/lean on the roof of the cabin towards the bow.

I'm not sure what significance that factoid has on the actual cocktail. I just know It wasn't complimentary as part of the $32 ticket. No, cocktails ranged from $8 to $12. Since Jamie W. and I were on vacation, we went to town and ordered a couple of $12 Anchors Away. The description listed three different rums and pineapple (photo: https://bit.ly/39Qylj0). Having something tropical while bracing Arctic-level winds may seem ironic, but it made the trip go faster. Nothing against the industrious two-woman crew, but the historical narration was a bit dry to listen to while completely sober. The coconut rum certainly brought the timber industry to life. Next time we'll take advantage of the $15 cocktail cruise. Cocktails and no information to retain. RELATED - Lost on the Lost Coast? Completely agree. We've chartered his boat a few times only when his worker was captain (who was…read morereally cool), but the young guy couldn't deal with the Curt man himself and left for Alaska. Your words are true. He's cheap and affordable for a reason. He'll never know what he's doing wrong. He was rude from the booking to the trip and back. And he wonders why his workers get more tips than him. I'm sure if he was reading this, he's be just fine and dandy we don't rebook, so do him a favor.

He may be an outstanding worker when it comes to being a deck hand on a crab boat or something similar, but his people skills are horrendous. The only thing he pointed out or taught us about was how to put the boat in neutral - in case he fell off. He asked us no questions about us or our expectations, experience, or desires about what we wanted to get out of the trip. He had no idea my sister and brother-in-law worked at the local Salmon hatchery and have more fishing experience or knowledge than 99% of the world. He did not communicate anything to us. His attitude was piss poor, he raised his voice, told my mom to sit down that she was in his way, and told another PAYING CUSTOMER he wasnt helping him at all. He did not let us participate at all when it came to putting the lines in the water, baiting the line, or netting the fish. All we did was reel in the line. If we had wanted to just come home with fish/Salmon and thats all we wanted out of it - we would just gone to the grocery store. He has yet to figure out the world does not revolve around him. All he talk or more bragged about was the owner of the company wants him to take over the crab boat cause no one can turn away 30%. The Wildrose needs to find another Captain or provide some extensive customer training. As of now, If you're looking for an enjoyable fishing trip, try one of the other local operations.

Loleta Eric’s Guide Service - On the water

Eric is well worth your time and money if you want an impressively high quality kayak fishing…read moreexperience. He's got the boats, he got the gear, he's got the locations for successful outings, yet the real qualities follow. Eric is an intelligent, resourceful, avid outdoorsman who knows the waters we fished around Shelter Cove due to years of guiding, and we caught fish! On our trip we caught at least 8 species of fish and brought home at least 12 fish. I say we caught at least 30-fish, but some were too small for fish and game regulations. The most important aspect to me was Eric's attention to detail regarding safety; the redundancy in marine radios, navigation tools, and consideration for weather conditions and watching for weather that was going to make the trip back to the launch site difficult. I spent 13-years as an Air Force Pararescueman (PJ) and have had my share of rescues, both on the coast in our Blackhawk helicopters and parachuting from a C-130 1,000-miles out to sea to perform a rescue. Eric is the epitome of a safe mariner and guide. My wife Kerry was very comfortable and secure, and caught more fish than any of us! Remember, you're in a kayak that has all the amenities of a ocean worthy kayak- very stable and plenty of dry storage space, deck storage space, no head and no galley (bathroom and kitchen). So, a lesson I learned was to strategically place food and water in reachable positions. You can tie down and stow gear n food on the front n back of the boat, and Eric will slide by and fetch it for you. Also we spent 7.5 hours in the cockpit which is totally up to your party on if you beach somewhere for a stretch and comfort break. We elected to fish and fish and it was totally cool with Eric, 7.5 hours of continuous fishing- marvelous. The addition of Eric's fish-finding sonar made for staying on the fish easier. I could easily go on, but I think I've made lots of great points on why we'll be going again!
