The Redwood Sky walk is located in the back left side of the zoo, it is a self guided tour. The skywalk slowly increases over 100 ft above the beautiful forest floor below and is about a 1/4 mile walk. I am afraid of heights, but felt safe walking along the trail. Most of the walk is over the park nextdoor to the zoo, as you are looking down from high above and you can see tiny people & dogs walking the trails below it was so cool. We could also see the bears in the zoo from high up in the trees, we had a better view of them than could see them below on the zoo trail. Be sure to look up at the majestic redwood trees along the trail, and when on the platforms you can touch the redwoods, and learn alittle about them with the information boards. It was an amazing experience, being so high up in the Redwood trees. It was Breathtaking and beautiful. I felt safe walking the trail as they had guardrails that go along the trail and was pretty good width across for people to walk by. People who are nervous of the wooden suspension bridges that move when others walking on them can walk about half way through trail before reaching these bridges and walk back the way they came. We will always remember this trip to Eureka, and cannot wait to bring our granddaughter here next time. Enjoy your adventure!

Nice visit at the garden [Eureka CA]…read more Just outside the zoo's northern perimeter is the Sequoia Park Garden on W Street. Street parking is available just outside of the entrance. The forecast was partly cloudy in the mid 50's. The garden isn't very big but I enjoyed the variety of flowers that were in bloom which is generally between May and September. Our visit was during the Memorial Day weekend. Took some time taking lots of photos of the colorful blooms including a collection of gorgeous dahlias... wish they had labels for all the flowers for us who are botanically illiterate. Flowers are beautiful subjects for photography that's why I love botanical gardens. The garden also featured a wishing well and a gazebo for small gatherings and events and, also, a small sundial, unfortunately, there was no sun at that time to tell the time of day ツ Sadly, we weren't able to go across to the park. Headwaters Forest Reserve is an amazing place and full of natural beauty! The trails are well maintained and there is a decent size parking lot. This Reserve protects 7,472 acres of old growth redwood groves, other forest stands, streams, and wildlife. This is an amazing place to go hiking at there is a Headwaters Education Center if you want to learn more about this area. There are different hikes you can take varying in length. Some of the trails are paved and some are unpaved. Dogs and bikes are allowed on some of the trails and not on others. The Elk River Trail is the longest trail and it is 11 miles roundtrip. This area is so peaceful and tranquil and loved that this area has been preserved so that everyone can enjoy it!

Careful when coming in because a car might be backing up or confused it is a one way! I highly appreciate that on the trail they consistently have signs to show you if you are allowed off trailing or not. It is helpful to see a map in case you are unsure how far you want to go in. Take into consideration the amount of miles going in and out. Usually my partner and I go up to the 2nd mile maker which is the bridge overlooking the river. And building up your tolerance from there.

I was pleasantly surprised at how easy it was to find, how short the walk is from my parking space and how clean the beach is. There were a few people along the beach as well as a few surfers in the water. Polite dogs and their walkers would stroll by on occasion. I thoroughly enjoyed lounging in my chair and reading while the sound of the waves calmed my soul. I look forward to returning on my next visit to the area.

Historic Military Fort [Eureka CA]…read more There's a lot to take in historically from Fort Humboldt. Although this site seems peaceful now, at one time it was the hub of a conflict between settlers and Native Americans. We walked through the grassy park area stopping to read interpretive signs along the way educating ourselves. The history of Fort Humboldt State Historic Park dates back to 1853. First, one of the most famous military personalities to serve here was Captain Ulysses S. Grant, the future U.S. President and commander of all Union forces during the Civil War. He was stationed here as Captain of Company F, 4th Infantry, in 1853-1854. His story is shared in historic signage and markers. No wait... FIRST! Fort Humboldt State Historic Park is haunted! The GhostTube app captured some anomalies when we used it. I posted a couple of videos. During its glory, the fort had 14 buildings: Officer's Quarters, barracks, a hospital, a blacksmith shop, a horse stable, and even a bakery. Wooden markers can be seen at the park indicating where they once stood. The reconstructed Surgeon's Quarters and original Fort Hospital remain standing till today and I wonder if they open the doors to visitors during park hours. One part of the park are collection of exhibits not related to the military history: railroad equipment and machinery used in the early days of 150 years of local logging history including a Donkey engine. There's one lady in particular who completely runs your workout with her extremely loud, obnoxious directions. She's clearly trying to desperately hold off her own aging procees and it isn't working. Her routines are right out of the 80s aerobics craze. She's got crazy red hair, but you'll be able to figure out who she is right away. Stay clear!

My instructor was very well versed and accredited to teach the course. He was also extremely patient with us newbies and took into account that we each had different body types and physical abilities. I especially appreciated the philosophy of the importance of safety at every moment. There were certainly little nuances I would not have thought of on my own. Best of all, it was REALLY FUN! I got to shoot 21 different firearms and it facilitated my understanding of what works for me and what I'd like to explore more. I recommend this course for anyone who is new to the sport or even the old dogs with rusty skills. I'm now an old dog with new skills and appreciation.
