As you walk through the glass doored entryway the room opens immediately into a great rotunda and gathering space for performances in the center that is open and expansive with glass walled exhibition galleries to both the left and right. Taking the stairs or elevator up to the second floor it immediately gives way to another catwalk gallery space lining the perimeter that opens to the floor below room. Both two and three dimensional works of art line the walls with intermittent spaces for viewers to move around the space easily. Taking the elevator or stairs down to the lower level, you'll find classrooms and offices as well as restrooms, an artwork production and gallery prep area and docent customer service station. Most all of the artwork on the walls is for sale, I acquired a beautiful piece of original art on my most recent visit for the Arts Alive first Saturday venue. This is a beautifully restored building with some of the best artwork, artists and artisans from the greater Humboldt county Area. 4.5 Stars - rounded up for my newest acquisition 00500

I try to go in every Historic Carnegie Library. Some are still library's but this one was restored for the community for art. This is one of 1,689 he had built in the US. What a great man to build something for the good of society. Was a wonderful way to make books available to everyone. The building inside and out is beautiful.

Viviana and Eric Hollenbeck were charming and generous with their time. They're genuinely kind folks with fascinating stories. The tour is partially upstairs so those with limited mobility may miss a bit but the majority can be accessed even for those who are wheelchair bound.

The village is a collection of buildings relocated from other areas, and they are dedicated to types of craftsmanship. There are SO many areas in the buildings to explore! They have woodworking, ceramics, glassworks, printing, signage, weaving, blacksmithing, and other crafts. The crew even built a replica of the hearse that carried Lincoln's coffin for the memorial trip from DC to Springfield, 150 years later. They also hand-crafted a redwood table for President Clinton's Presidential Library. Because the buildings are working sites, visitors must be careful as they walk through each area. Thankfully, all the walkways are of sturdy recent construction--even the catwalk on the second floor of the main building. Tours are led by knowledgeable guides, and visitors may have the opportunity to see craftsmen at work; on our visit, there was a gentleman working on a sign for a local ballpark. He stopped what he was doing and talked through the process of converting an artist's sketch to a finished, billboard-sized sign. It was fascinating to see! The grounds are lovely and have views of Humboldt Bay from the top of the rise. There are gardens planted in various sites around the village, and it is very pretty in the spring. For a unique experience of immersion into craftworks, I definitely recommend a visit to The Blue Ox!

Arcata Marsh Interpretive Center

Arcata Marsh Interpretive Center

After entering, I met a gentleman that was manning the Interpretive Center. We had a long conversation about the Marsh and the ecology of the area - and I asked him about the Crows. Turns out I was there at low tide. The creek channels meandering through the Marsh are largely dewatered at low tide - and this exposes the mud - and these tiny little mud crabs - which the Crows then target for a meal. So the Crows congregate around the Interpretive Center during this time of the day, swoop in, snag a mud crab, then find a place to eat it. There are a number of pilings sticking up in the Marsh - which were supports for a now long defunct tannery. The Crows apparently land on the tops of the pilings to smash open the mud crabs and eat them. The Interpretive Center has some interesting and informative exhibits about the ecology of the Arcata Marsh. The person I chatted with told me I should come back again later in the day during high tide. Apparently there is a family of river otters that is intermittently seen swimming through the channels of the Marsh! I dearly would have loved to have experienced that. I planned to come back at High Tide - but never actually made it back due to an overloaded schedule of vacation things to see and do! There is a network of hiking trails through the Marsh as well. I hiked a brief section of the Marsh before calling it a day. Check this place out! Plan to spend some time here - slow down and enjoy it! #ArcataMarshInterpretiveCenter

Especially if you are here you will be able to find various unique birds by going bird watching after all the interpretative center is an area to educate yourself with the wildlife that habitat themselves in the am nearby areas of the marsh. I do have fond memories of going on field trips here and checking out the area where the urine disposal goes. Sounds gross, I know but believe it or not it was highly educational. Apparently the only plant that can pass into our intestines and still reproduce is the tomato seed. It was quite the sight to see. Many small plants were growing in what looked like a cross between a small green house and a gated barn. Surprisingly it didn't smell terrible outside. I do want to warn people from going to late in this marsh people not only can you run into interesting folks but also interesting bugs, critters and animals the darker it becomes. Overall, keep your eyes peeled and senses heightened because EVERY SINGLE TIME we always discover or see something new we didn't see before ^_*
