While there are "infant" areas, I'd say that this place is ideal for the 2 years through kindergarten crowd. Grocery shopping area, water play, baby doll area, gardening area...and it's not too big. It's definitely worth the $5/pp admission. The gift shop has some great M&D items but all have been there awhile as you can see the fading from the sun (and overpriced compared to what you can buy on AMZN). 5 stars for a great kids museum in a small town.

Sequoia Park Zoo was such a fun zoo to visit!! Read on to hear my thoughts!…read more The zoo: There is a path that leads around the zoo and about 20+ exhibits. My personal favorite was the flamingos because we got to see them up close!! The red panda was also super cute. The sky bridge: There is also a sky bridge at this zoo! It is quite high and the bridges that connect to the platforms were such a fun touch!! You can see some of the animals and the surroundings forests from up there and it was so freaking cool. Since this is California, they did have a lot of cool big trees as well! Parking: I parked on the street for this zoo since it gave me closer access. I believe there may have been a park with an actual parking lot nearby but it was slightly farther from the zoo. Photography policy: They allow and encourage photos to be taken and shared! You just can't sell them or license them without getting permissions and checking with them first. The staff: The employees were super knowledgeable and helpful! There's a couple wandering around the zoo so you can ask them questions about the animals. Final thoughts: This was such an awesome zoo!! It was cute and not too crowded. I loved the variety of exhibits!

Use the trail to get a better view of the bears. 2 restrooms. 1 by the gift shop and entrance 1 in the Barnyard, petting zoo. There is cafe onsite, serving hamburgers and ice cream and various deep fried side dishes. The gift shop is limited. There really is not much of a selection of items, you will have to go thru the gift shop to exit the zoo. The zoo is very small, but the center attraction is the Redwood Sky Walk. There is a raised trail thru the redwoods over the zoo and thru part of the park. Rickety Bridges, high rise platforms and views into the Bear enclosures.

Historic Military Fort [Eureka CA]…read more There's a lot to take in historically from Fort Humboldt. Although this site seems peaceful now, at one time it was the hub of a conflict between settlers and Native Americans. We walked through the grassy park area stopping to read interpretive signs along the way educating ourselves. The history of Fort Humboldt State Historic Park dates back to 1853. First, one of the most famous military personalities to serve here was Captain Ulysses S. Grant, the future U.S. President and commander of all Union forces during the Civil War. He was stationed here as Captain of Company F, 4th Infantry, in 1853-1854. His story is shared in historic signage and markers. No wait... FIRST! Fort Humboldt State Historic Park is haunted! The GhostTube app captured some anomalies when we used it. I posted a couple of videos. During its glory, the fort had 14 buildings: Officer's Quarters, barracks, a hospital, a blacksmith shop, a horse stable, and even a bakery. Wooden markers can be seen at the park indicating where they once stood. The reconstructed Surgeon's Quarters and original Fort Hospital remain standing till today and I wonder if they open the doors to visitors during park hours. One part of the park are collection of exhibits not related to the military history: railroad equipment and machinery used in the early days of 150 years of local logging history including a Donkey engine. This is a lovely little park by the water with plenty of space for pups to run around. Fenced all…read morearound so no fear of going in the water (if you want your pup in the water, go to Samoa Dunes). It needs a little TLC...next time I go I'd just bring a trash bag and pick up a few little things...stuffing from well-used toys, headless doll (although dogs still love them like that)...and maybe a couple of the chairs that people have brought but which have seen better days. Still enjoyed it very, very much and there were two terrific pups that showed up mid-day while we were there who were great playmates for my pup. Parking right next to the bathrooms and kiddie park...walk beyond the kiddie park and there's the gate. Would totally go back.

Walking around Freshwater Farms Reserve is like taking a stroll through a Thomas Hardy novel…read more Birdsong erupts from every bush. Trees shade the path at every turn. Doe-eyed cows look at you as you pass, grazing in the nearby pasture. All in all, this is a beautiful nature trail to walk. It is easy to access, well-maintained, and has lots of signage to educate you about the surrounding area. It is not a loop trail, so be prepared to double back once you reach the end. Sadly, they do not allow dogs, which is my only qualm. Then again, since it's a nature reserve, this is understandable. The trail itself is flat and wide, making it easy to access. I would recommend bringing sunscreen and mosquito repellent, however as the tall grass in the area most certainly harbors tiny, winged vampires. However, the views of the old pastureland are breathtaking. The trail itself runs parallel to the slough, so it's good to have a camera at the ready for some shots of the riparian side. Stop in and get some local honey or goat's milk soap at the country store on the way out. It's good for treating oneself for having lugged one's butt off the couch to walk in nature.

Great for a short hike…read more Looking forward to the return of animals and plants that were displaced by turning the area into pasture over 100 years ago. A lot of work has been done to return the wetlands to their former state, and it shows. The rebuilt barn and active garden is also a feast for the eyes. Plenty of parking and usually just a few nature lovers on the trail. Just Do It!

This Disc Golf Course is a short 9 hole "pitch and Putt ". The course often has trash, and the park…read moreis sketchy at times. The course has a couple good holes, generally good for beginners. Legend has it the area was cursed in black magic, so try to avoid anyone who dresses like a witch or warlock. I definitely feel bad juju on hole 6.

But we hadn't been there more than five minutes before she was attacked by another dog. The owner, a middle aged balding white man, was sooo unconcerned that his dog attacked mine. My dog practically dragged me out of the park and back to my car.

From the CADF&G web site: "The 484-acre Fay Slough Wildlife Area is previously grazed land that has been restored to coastal and seasonal wetlands. Riparian woodlands occur along the eastern and southern edges of the area, and are dominated by red alder and willows. Many species of resident and migratory songbirds utilize this habitat, as well as egrets, herons and various raptors. Right off the 101 at the mid-city motor world exit. This natural wildlife area directly across from…read morethe bay on the east side of the highway, provides some of the best area outside of the marsh for migratory bird watching. The area is level and relatively flat easy walking, and the slough and wetlands around it provide the perfect habitat for viewing and watching some great seasonal travelers as well as the areas natives. As you exit, there is a small amount a flat parking spaces at the trail head, park and walk in - usually easy access as not many people stop at this cool sanctuary. The trail way is easy walking, hiking, biking and only maybe a mile into the slough and wetlands. There are birds everywhere. I stop by here when I get the chance on cool mornings as it makes for some great viewing. This Wildlife Conservation Board property is well worth the stop and most don't - an easy walking trail with lots open area for birding, hiking, running and biking. the area is open from dawn to dust daily. 4 Stars. 00206
