I found Wind Rose Charters by accident. I was searching craigslist for a fish tank and found their post under activity partners. Being a local, I've heard of many of the fishing ships - the Shellback, Reel Steel, Jumpn' Jack, but not Wind Rose. I did a little research and was very impressed by their website. I liked the price ($110+tip), the idea of getting dungeness crab, and having a choice between a 7am or a 7pm fishing trip. I called in and booked a trip and then liked them on facebook to see what people were catching. Their social media person contacted me and asked me to write a blog about my experience. Since I was planning to write a detailed yelp review anyway, I figured why not. Before the trip I signed up for Salty's fishing Derby which runs Memorial Day to Labor Day. It was $10 to enter in the category of salmon. The Wind Rose website says to get there by 6:30am, and the trip starts at 7am. I made the mistake of stopping for ice at the Chevron before the trip. There was a bunch of other fishermen in line and it took me about 12 minutes to get through the line. I arrived at a full boat waiting for me at 6:40am and after some introductions we were off at 6:45am. We didn't have to go far. We had our lines in the water by 7:15am. I was the first to put my line in and the first to catch a nice 14lb salmon. Even though we all had assigned poles, we took turns pulling in our first fish regardless of pole. We tried to stick with our own poles after that, but there were time when 2, 3, and even 4 fish were on the lines at once and whoever was closest grabbed a pole. Curt was an excellent Captain. He knew exactly where and how to catch our limits quickly. I had both my Salmon by 8:10am and the boat had their limits by 8:30am. Curt made quick work of cleaning the fish exactly as requested, packed them in bags, and had us heading home by 10am. I almost felt bad taking the day off of work... almost. After fishing, I went back to Salty's and weighed in my largest salmon at 13.5 lbs after gilling and gutting. I spent $130($20 tip) and got about 24 lbs of Salmon meat, which means I paid about $5.41 a pound for salmon rather that the store price of $14.99. I gave 6 lbs. of it to my co-workers, and then hosted a salmon feast for 16 people. We made four different sauces: (1) Butter, dill, lemon juice, and garlic salt with parsley, (2) Tequila, Mango, and Jalapeno, (3) Dijon mustard, dill, and lemon, (4) and something special. We cut a whole salmon into steaks, tied the steaks inside corn husk filled with lemon slices, rosemary sprigs, sliced garlic, and butter. Most of it was cooked over mesquite coals. I also kept the caucuses of the salmon and covered it in the lemon butter sauce and cooked it for an appetizer. I originally just wanted the collar bone and cheeks, but Curt advised me about how to cook the carcass and it was fantastic! Dinner was excellent and after making a couple to-go plates, I still had about 3 lbs of cooked salmon in my fridge. I highly recommend Win Rose Charters.

100% TRUE TO THEIR WORD In an era where reliance on the…read moreinternet to research a regularity nowadays, I know how some can be skeptical of what they see vs what is actually delivered. In this case, EVERYTHING promoted and promised on the website is what you get! Doug, Heidi, their family and entire staff do an amazing job to make you feel welcome and part of the Marble Mountain Ranch family. From the moment we arrived at the Ranch, we were met by Doug, who hopped on his ATV and led us to our cabin, gave us a tour and informed us about dinner that first night. I'll break the rest of this review up into parts to help you get an idea of how much fun MMR is as well as how everything they promise is delivered upon...all while trying not to spoil the surprise of how amazing being there is. BOOKING: It is a working ranch and know that it is normal to get their answering machine when you call. Leave a message if you don't get Doug or Heidi on the phone with your number and know they'll definitely call you back. Heidi is amazing and will answer any and all questions you have. Do make sure you have a "Plan B & C" as dates/weeks fill up rather quickly. Be sure to have your whole party size ready as well as Heidi does a great job making sure your whole party has adequate and appropriately comfortable accommodations for your party. ACCOMMODATIONS/LODGING: The cabins are beautiful and plenty spacious for all your party's needs. Every cabin is equipped with a window A/C unit that keeps everything plenty cool on hot days and a floor heater for those trips where the weather turns cooler. They are stocked it's pots, pans, dish and silverware, a full refrigerator/freezer and microwave. Bedrooms are perfect size for every guest as well. FOOD: Fresh cooked breakfast, lunch, and dinners are prepared by Heidi and her staff and provide you delicious meals that sufficiently fill you for the day ahead or to fill a hungry belly after a full day of activities. There's a variety of options for everyone - and at dinner time, there are wine and beer options as well. ACTIVITIES: You WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED! Everyone, at every skill level will have an opportunity to experience everything. From your time in the arena learning how to guide, ride and get comfortable on a horse, to being on the trails taking in the forest and amazing views, to your time on the River going through the rapids, you are never disappointed. Doug and Heidi employ some of the most knowledgeable, kind, and engaging staff our group has ever met at a vacation getaway. Heidi makes sure you provide them, when booking, your skill levels to ensure everyone has a safe and amazing time. CONCLUSION: In the technological age where we're perennially connected to all things electronics, this was an amazing opportunity to unplug, get away from the hustle and bustle of busy life and enjoy nature in all its glory. We had two teenage girls in our party and they didn't miss being unable to scroll social media, or the internet all day long. By the end of each day you were physically spent and happy to have downtime with family and other ranch guests. Each night there were activities and opportunities to engage with and get to know Doug & Heidi, their family and staff. Our family came in with no expectations other than the excitement of a new and different opportunity at a getaway vacation. We were blown away at how amazing the experience was and we're already planning a return visit in the coming years. From our family to Doug, Heidi, their family and staff we say THANK YOU for an AMAZING experience that we will not soon forget! I hope this review helps continue to bring you great business and prosperity in the future...and we look forward to seeing you all again soon!

There is a depth and breadth of expertise and care in how it is run that makes this a very special experience. We were fully occupied from morning until night, coasting from one unforgettable and enriching experience to the next. The ranch itself is stunning, and set in a spectacular landscape. Each activity was of the highest quality and it felt enormously luxurious to be in such capable hands throughout. It was a stretch for us financially but absolutely some of the best money we have ever spent

Our group was age 10 - 64 and everyone survived :-) *** request Chris *** I guess I didn't realize how potentially dangerous it was until a couple of our teenagers fell out of the raft during a rapid.... But they were ok... Only bruises and some scrapes. They would do it all over again.... Falls and all. We went on a Class III tour which included Class I - III rapids. It's sort of "medium adventurous". If you have a lot of younger or older people in your group, you are probably good sticking with a Class I - II tour. But you will be safe during a Class III if you tell your guide that you can't swim, don't want to be thrown from the raft, etc. TIPS: DRINK A LOT OF WATER, show up early, expect to be exhausted the next day, expect to do a little hiking / climbing during lunch, Bring sunscreen, get one of those things that help your sunglasses stay around your neck because you will lose them, wear a visor or a cap under your helmet, bring cash to tip your guide because they do a hell of a job and they only make $100/day. IT'S A LOT OF FUN and the owners are really nice people.

September 11, 2025 - Mike Thompson Wildlife Refuge Area, Arcata, CA…read more My husband found this area on the map, and wanted to check it out. Also called South Spit Wildlife Area, it is managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). It is a long narrow spit of land approximately 4-1/2 miles long and contains almost 600 acres of coastal dunes located approximately 5 miles south of Eureka. We arrived on a Thursday afternoon and practically had the place to ourselves. The BLM website says the area can draw anywhere from 20,000 to 80,000 visitors a year--a huge swing--but we must have lucked into the off season. Aside from a family playing on the beach, a couple of fishermen casting their lines, and a few workers updating the kiosk, it felt wonderfully quiet. We explored the area a bit. Unfortunately, we missed the off-leash season for dogs, so our pup had to stay on her leash. (Dogs allowed on leash March through September 15 and off-leash the rest of the year.) I could see this being an ideal spot to visit during the off-leash season--perfect for finding a quiet stretch of sand and letting your pup roam alongside you.

Meike Thompson Wildlife Refuge Area, Eureka, California, September 11, 2025…read more We were out exploring and came across this wildlife area on the south spit of the Mike Thompson Wildlife Refuge. It's about a 20 minute drive from the freeway down to the ocean. They do have a pit toilet there with some interpretive signs at the first parking lot you come to on the ocean. You can drive on the south spit north for quite a ways,. We drove for about a mile and then turned around. They do have some areas were you can actually drive down onto the beach. We chose not to do that. We didn't have very good cell coverage there and we didn't want to risk getting stuck in the sand. We did find a place to park and walk down to the beach. There are some areas of the beach that are pretty level and other areas have a steep decline. Beware of potential sleeper waves.
