Marble Mountain Ranch - Our cabin

    Marble Mountain Ranch

It is not easy to get across just how wonderful Marble Mountain Ranch is. We were anxious about how…read morethe week would go for our family of 4 with two teenagers, but this dissipated within seconds of arrival. There is a depth and breadth of expertise and care in how it is run that makes this a very special experience. The horses are loved, well-trained and contented, the staff are all adorable, the food glorious. We were fully occupied from morning until night, coasting from one unforgettable and enriching experience to the next. The ranch itself is stunning, and set in a spectacular landscape. Each activity was of the highest quality and it felt enormously luxurious to be in such capable hands throughout. It was a stretch for us financially but absolutely some of the best money we have ever spent

All the activities are scheduled so carefully that I was able to participate in everything I wanted to do. Their horses are very well cared for, well behaved and trained. No swaybacked trail nags here! The up to date whitewater rafts and staff were all very knowledgeable and safety oriented. We had some GREAT rapids rides!! The shooting involved expert SAFE instruction and a revolving set of varied experiences with different weapons. The children in attendance had the time of their lives as did this 74 year old horsewoman! The ranch is self sufficient ( off the grid) and well off the beaten path. A real community developed amongst the guests under the guidance and warm personalities of Heidi and Doug. The 30 plus years of love and devotion to the upkeep of the natural beauty of their ranch showed in the gardens and plantings of flowers and trees in abundance. Even the gaggle of teenaged sisters spent less time in the lodge (the only WiFi) than one would have imagined! A fun and deeply relaxing time in nature was had by all. I will definitely be back again! Happy Trails!

Redwoods and Rivers - Evenings spent chatting around the campfire

Their site and cabins are comfortable, clean, and cozy. It's such a treat to have delicious breakfasts and dinners al fresco, under a canopy of tall trees. There are a variety of options for ingredients for your sandwiches on the river and delicious, homemade salsa. Michael and Wanda are great hosts making sure you have everything you need. The rafting equipment is well maintained. Our evenings were topped off sitting around a campfire. Anyone would be fortunate to spend time a couple of days with Redwoods and Rivers.

**** Ask for driving directions. Address does not show up appropriately on apple maps. ****…read more GREAT EXPERIENCE.... Even for beginners. Our group was age 10 - 64 and everyone survived :-) *** request Chris *** I guess I didn't realize how potentially dangerous it was until a couple of our teenagers fell out of the raft during a rapid.... But they were ok... Only bruises and some scrapes. They would do it all over again.... Falls and all. We went on a Class III tour which included Class I - III rapids. It's sort of "medium adventurous". If you have a lot of younger or older people in your group, you are probably good sticking with a Class I - II tour. But you will be safe during a Class III if you tell your guide that you can't swim, don't want to be thrown from the raft, etc. TIPS: DRINK A LOT OF WATER, show up early, expect to be exhausted the next day, expect to do a little hiking / climbing during lunch, Bring sunscreen, get one of those things that help your sunglasses stay around your neck because you will lose them, wear a visor or a cap under your helmet, bring cash to tip your guide because they do a hell of a job and they only make $100/day. IT'S A LOT OF FUN and the owners are really nice people.

    Mike Thompson Wildlife Area

September 11, 2025 - Mike Thompson Wildlife Refuge Area, Arcata, CA…read more My husband found this area on the map, and wanted to check it out. Also called South Spit Wildlife Area, it is managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). It is a long narrow spit of land approximately 4-1/2 miles long and contains almost 600 acres of coastal dunes located approximately 5 miles south of Eureka. We arrived on a Thursday afternoon and practically had the place to ourselves. The BLM website says the area can draw anywhere from 20,000 to 80,000 visitors a year--a huge swing--but we must have lucked into the off season. Aside from a family playing on the beach, a couple of fishermen casting their lines, and a few workers updating the kiosk, it felt wonderfully quiet. We explored the area a bit. Unfortunately, we missed the off-leash season for dogs, so our pup had to stay on her leash. (Dogs allowed on leash March through September 15 and off-leash the rest of the year.) I could see this being an ideal spot to visit during the off-leash season--perfect for finding a quiet stretch of sand and letting your pup roam alongside you.

Meike Thompson Wildlife Refuge Area, Eureka, California, September 11, 2025…read more We were out exploring and came across this wildlife area on the south spit of the Mike Thompson Wildlife Refuge. It's about a 20 minute drive from the freeway down to the ocean. They do have a pit toilet there with some interpretive signs at the first parking lot you come to on the ocean. You can drive on the south spit north for quite a ways,. We drove for about a mile and then turned around. They do have some areas were you can actually drive down onto the beach. We chose not to do that. We didn't have very good cell coverage there and we didn't want to risk getting stuck in the sand. We did find a place to park and walk down to the beach. There are some areas of the beach that are pretty level and other areas have a steep decline. Beware of potential sleeper waves.
