Beautiful day with clear skies

Interested in visiting the smallest licensed bar in California? Stumbled upon the Madaket on an evening stroll along the boardwalk after a visit to Living the Dream Ice Cream. It was an informative and scenic 75-minute historically, narrated cruise along 8.5 miles of the Humboldt Bay. It was thoughtful that they offered complimentary blankets to use during the cruise since it gets kind of cold at times. There was also the option of purchasing beverages and snacks. Hot cider felt great for our cold hands. We showed up at 12:30pm to purchase tickets for the 1:00pm cruise and were the second party in line. Parking is ample, and their office is right in front Jack's grill. You can't miss it. Would highly recommend to anyone around the area or passing through Eureka. Also would suggest bringing a hat and sunblock as it was pretty sunny during my trip.

The Madaket docked and ready for passengers!

Take this tour! We took the historic tour of Humboldt Bay today and I have to say it's the best value for my entertainment dollar so far this year. Captain Zippo is great at her job - skilled pilot and knowledgeable beyond expectations of the history of the bay - the COMPLETE history. Daisy, (the crew) is friendly , efficient and I hear she makes a mean Bloody Mary. Thanks for a great trip around the bay and through the history of Humboldt Bay.

There is Table Bluff Lighthouse which is a very small Lighthouse but cute all the same. It is kept up well and is one that lighthouse buffs may like. Nearby is a fishermans memorial where you can see a list of people who have been lost at sea in the area over the years. There is a large fisherman statue there as well as part of the memorial. Nice stop to make if out and about taking in the sights around town.

My most recent visit, Dungeness Crabs are in season after a delayed start! This small commerical marina actually has several docks running alphabetically, A through G - signage on the road frontage letting the passersby know what the mornings catch is and today it was our amazing local crab and our world class Kumamoto oysters, these petite beauties are a famous staple on the north coast waters here on Humboldt Bay. A marina coffeshop with restaurant are on site that has okay food and a full bar, there is also a charter house where some fishing vessels can be reserved by the hour, half day, day or longer. There is a Fisherman of the Sea memorial to all those who've made the ultimate sacrifice, working on the north coasts unforgiving and often dangerous waters. Ample parking at all the different docks. The coast guard also maintains a presence at this marina as well. The public can visit the docks and enjoy the views of old town waterfront, of the marina and Humboldt Bay out to the Pacific Ocean. A cool marina, where you can purchase freshly caught seafood right off the boat. Definately worth a visit and stop if you like fresh seafood, big commercial fishing boats, or just being on the water. 4 Stars 00669

The village is a collection of buildings relocated from other areas, and they are dedicated to types of craftsmanship. There are SO many areas in the buildings to explore! They have woodworking, ceramics, glassworks, printing, signage, weaving, blacksmithing, and other crafts. The crew even built a replica of the hearse that carried Lincoln's coffin for the memorial trip from DC to Springfield, 150 years later. They also hand-crafted a redwood table for President Clinton's Presidential Library. Because the buildings are working sites, visitors must be careful as they walk through each area. Thankfully, all the walkways are of sturdy recent construction--even the catwalk on the second floor of the main building. Tours are led by knowledgeable guides, and visitors may have the opportunity to see craftsmen at work; on our visit, there was a gentleman working on a sign for a local ballpark. He stopped what he was doing and talked through the process of converting an artist's sketch to a finished, billboard-sized sign. It was fascinating to see! The grounds are lovely and have views of Humboldt Bay from the top of the rise. There are gardens planted in various sites around the village, and it is very pretty in the spring. For a unique experience of immersion into craftworks, I definitely recommend a visit to The Blue Ox!
