Armed with an array of food allergies reaching Olympic levels (watch me break out in hives for…read moreAustralia!), eating out can be a trial for me. I have sat through many a meal watching other people eat. Not so at the Jazz Apple Kitchen. Hallelujah! Food I can eat! This was for many years the site of the Blue Tongue Cafe, a bit of an institution locally, so I'm very glad to see the new owners have kept up the old homely-if-your-home-was-a-funky-Newtown-stylishly-impoverished-but-cool-hangout vibe. They have local muso's playing Friday and weekend nights for tips, even the odd board game night I believe. They're small and do have quite the clientele, so it's advised to book ahead if you can. Best of all, and for which I praise them to the skies, is that they're allergen-aware to an unusually high level, almost everything on the menu has at least gluten-free options. Us poor, deprived types need to eat out too... The GF fruit bread I chose for brekky was actually really good (any of you aware of the crisis state of GF breads will understand the rarity of that statement). It's homemade, chock full of fruity goodness, and the coffee was large and satisying. I wish I'd been there around lunchtime, the menu made me embarassingly drooly: 'strawberry fennel sald with pistachio dukkah and balsamic dressing'. And a 55cent babycino for the littlies, yay. I sat at a little table ouside and read the community notices on the wall (local Crop & Swap produce meet and classes for mental silence). Walked home happy and without going into anaphylactic shock. Always a plus..

Nestled in Glenbrook at the entrance of the Blue Mountains, this cafe was teeming with locals and…read moretourists alike on Saturday morning. It's decor was lovely with local artist's pieces for sale adorning the walls. I wish I could speak more highly of the food... however this was one of those experiences which left me feeling that I could have saved the money and just cooked a better meal in my kitchen. There was a 15-20 minute wait for coffee and since it was so busy, we were left sitting outside in the cold wondering if they'd forgotten us. A further 20 minute wait (total of 40mins) for food. The food was the biggest disappointment! I had the morrocan breakfast. It was bland with a capital B. The turkish bread with soggy and thinly cut, under several pieces of moist pan fried, thick unseasoned eggplant. I don't think the dish was spiced at all and there was so salt and pepper on the table for us to at least add some flavour to the dish with. ... about as far as the beautiful spiced dishes of Morocco as you can get.

Now it is actually called underground coffee ever since the new owner has taken over and made it into a coffee roasting location.

The second star is for the venue itself ...... it appears to be a converted small church with tables inside and outside .... it's well decorated and feels homely. Unfortunately, the service was just a little below average. As we waited outside and reading a menu practically in front of staff, no one bothered to approach us and update us on the seating situation. As we had our little four legged mate with us .... we needed an outside table ..... and any idea of waiting time would have been helpful. I'm ok with no table service ..... but then ordering was a little hectic and I didn't feel like I was enjoying any part of this experience. As pictured, the food was uninspired and average ..... lacked any real flavor ..... and ended just being a snack as we proceeded to another cafe for something more filling.

Alert the media. I've found Elvis…read more He's standing in the corner of this cafe in Glenbrook. Seriously, a life size Elvis. For what earthly reason I have no idea. If the place was going for the full retro diner vibe, then it'd make sense. As it is, think manufactured cafe-by-plan but with Elvis and a couple of 'star' plaques on the wall, J-Lo included. Now, I'm not exactly up on her movements, but I'm pretty darn sure she's never been to Glenbrook. So - why? I walked in here early one morning, before anything else was open, desperate for caffeine. I wasn't expecting much, having been to the cafe-by-rote replica in Springwood, both seem to be outgrowths of the real estate agents they're parked next to. Sadly, the giftshop was closed and I am unable to report on the allegedly 'famous' painted Australian panorama. After jumping out of my skin at Elvis (out of the corner of my eye I thought it was an actual person for a second) I headed straight for a booth only to find they were all marked off as reserved. Before 9am. In Glenbrook. There were three other people in there. Don't get me wrong, the coffee was better than expected, the waitress was great and I know I'm not the target demographic for the 'traditional' food on offer. In fact, the more I sat there, the more the place took on a David-Lynch-type vibe which was kind of intriguing. The place is echoing and a bit dark, and when some creepy old guy started warbling 'Over the Rainbow' on the stereo I started surreptitously looking around in case of anyone huffing on an oxygen mask. I half expected bizarro no-eyebrow guy to walk up, hand me a phone and tell me to ring my house because he's there right now... Didn't think to check if they had cherry pie on the menu. If they don't, they should. Seriously weird.

My bf & I loved the creamy crepes and the grilled salmon toast (had yummy cheese&avocado)...even the side house salad was the best house salad we ever had! How weird is it for someone to review the house salad?? But seriously, I think it says a lot about this place! It had some unique fresh greens and an amazingly light fresh vinegrette! We also highly recommend the chocolate topped custard bar (has shredded cocunut...sorry forget the name) AND the Florentine cookies! Boo on the Choc Roc cake, too dry like shortbread cookies or biscotti (not my thing...I'm all about moist, rich, creamy, heavy)!!!! No wi fi is a boo! Easy to park and find seating. Wish I could come here too every morning&lunch.

The menu boasts a wide range of delicious options, however I do recommend some changes. I ordered a Vanilla Espresso Protein Shake, and it came out watery and to be honest, didn't taste very desirable. However I understand the current predicament and it seemed to be very busy, it really wasn't too much of an issue. I was contemplating this and the Iced Coffee, but didn't know it the coffee was blended or not. In future it would be nice if that would be specified. Now regarding the food, it was absolutely delicious! I ordered the Açai bowl, it was so good and the presentation was so beautifully done. It tasted as good as it looked as well, I wish there was more! It was a nice meal for breakfast and filled me up without making me feel sick. The only thing I would like to note is that the meals come out at the same time. My order came out 20 minutes before my friends, it was hard to resist the look of my Açai bowl. Other than that, it was a delightful breakfast and start to the day. I recommend to everyone and I'm sure Emu Hall is a restaurant fit for all occasions. A true gem!
