Armed with an array of food allergies reaching Olympic levels (watch me break out in hives for Australia!), eating out can be a trial for me. I have sat through many a meal watching other people eat. Not so at the Jazz Apple Kitchen. Hallelujah! Food I can eat!
This was for many years the site of the Blue Tongue Cafe, a bit of an institution locally, so I'm very glad to see the new owners have kept up the old homely-if-your-home-was-a-funky-Newtown-stylishly-impoverished-but-cool-hangout vibe. They have local muso's playing Friday and weekend nights for tips, even the odd board game night I believe. They're small and do have quite the clientele, so it's advised to book ahead if you can.
Best of all, and for which I praise them to the skies, is that they're allergen-aware to an unusually high level, almost everything on the menu has at least gluten-free options. Us poor, deprived types need to eat out too... The GF fruit bread I chose for brekky was actually really good (any of you aware of the crisis state of GF breads will understand the rarity of that statement). It's homemade, chock full of fruity goodness, and the coffee was large and satisying. I wish I'd been there around lunchtime, the menu made me embarassingly drooly: 'strawberry fennel sald with pistachio dukkah and balsamic dressing'. And a 55cent babycino for the littlies, yay.
I sat at a little table ouside and read the community notices on the wall (local Crop & Swap produce meet and classes for mental silence). Walked home happy and without going into anaphylactic shock. Always a plus.. read more
