We love this studio! My daughter takes two classes here a week and she absolutely loves it - the teachers are wonderful and the classes are very reasonably priced. My only complaint is the classes that have students signed up from Long Beach recreation. It creates a lot of chaos when kids have been in the class for a few weeks but then new students come in who don't really know what is going on - especially for younger kids. I understand it's a way to get new clients but it feels a little unfair to the kids that have been in the class for a while because it becomes super chaotic when multiple new students come in. The only other complaint is some of the parents are absolutely insufferable, but that's not to the fault of the studio! read more

We've been at Kick It Up for about 2.5 years now. Originally joining for their musical theater classes/program - we quickly fell in love with the community there and are now entering year three on dance team! I have 2 girls there, under the age of 11 and they have flourished in this extremely supportive environment. What sets Kick It Up apart is its strong community feel. People take care of each other and coaches prioritize the kids' well-being above all else, even at competitions. KIU teaches so much more than great dancing - informally and formally. My oldest daughter, who at the time was 5 years old, did a free Ballet-Tap Combo Level 1 trial class with this studio in November 2021 and here we are 1.5 years later and loving it. I found the studio on Yelp and didn't know anyone that came here personally. I was hopeful it would be a good experience, but it has surpassed my expectations overall! Over time, and in addition to ballet, we've done Hip Hop classes, Jazz classes, Winter and Spring recitals, weekly summer camps, workshops and the competition dance team. We've taken classes with Miss Shelley, Miss Heather, Miss Susan, and Miss Sam and each are so warm, welcoming and at the same time very professional. You can tell the teachers make each student feel special. It's also extremely easy to ask questions about classes, or your account, via email. Miss Susan responds very timely and is so helpful. Susan was so wonderful with my son. Excellent and open communication. She earned his trust almost immediately. She has a gift connecting with children because she listens and observes while teaching. My son had the wiggles, he said he needed to run a lap so she made that lap fun by timing him. It took less than a minute for her to honor his request then he gave her his attention and had a productive session. And when she got his attention, she kept it. I'm grateful to have met Susan. I've been taking my daughters to Kick it Up for almost four years. I felt like they handled the pandemic really well and continued to create some normalcy and fun for my kids which really meant a lot to our family. Now KIU feels like our home away from home. My daughter loves Ms. Heather! She is great with little ones! My daughter just turned three and she's all over the place, but Ms. Heather knows just how to redirect her and is very patient with her. I had enrolled her in a different class with a different instructor (because the other day worked better with our schedule) after having taken a summer class with ms. This is a great studio if you sign up for classes through Kick it Up itself. Otherwise, little regard is shown to you (by Susan, the owner) if you happen to sign up through the city instead. (I have done ~ & experienced BOTH ~ prices are vastly different). Rudeness, however, Not only to me.. walking by without any sort of acknowledgement.. but to our instructor (Isabel) too. In this recent experience, Susan cancelled an (adult) class a few of my friends & I have been dedicatedly taking without informing Isabel that she was no longer on the schedule the following month ~ (anyone hear of "notice"? ). She happened to find out from us because sign ups for her class had disappeared.. with Susan LATER stating to her that she was 'meaning' to let her know. Oops! Avoiding sounds more like it!!! What disturbed me most though was seeing Susan walking by Isabel without eye contact or even a smile.. while Isabel kept moving along w her cheerful and bright attitude to the rest of us. Truly Heartbreaking. Seeing what I have seen.. and knowing what I do now.. I would NOT reccommend coming here. Susan may respond with some of her colorful words... but kindness.. & consideration of others no matter WHAT the circumstance go a long way in life. Sadly.. My last review was a few years ago, but I am glad to say that I am still happy with Kick it Up! We have endured Covid and Kick it Up still seems to be thriving. The kids still wear masks while dancing and parents, instructors and staff still wear masks inside, but morale has never been better. Ms. Susan still has free class week, themed costume week, and cookie exchanges during the holiday season. Dance teams are enjoying holiday parties and birthday celebrations still happen. As we approach the new year and the beginning of competition season, the excitement and expectations are growing. The Kick it Up Recital is right around the corner, and everyone is working really hard to perfect their dances. We will soon enjoy show and tell, where classes perform for each other to experience what it's like to perform in front of people. The Kick it Up family is very supportive and accepting! Being a part of the kick it up studio has been such an amazing experience for my 5 year old daughter. She started beginning ballet/tap last year during the pandemic and her teacher went out of her way to make sure all the students felt special and supported. They really go above and beyond when it comes to helping their dancers and the parents find a solution to any questions regarding sizing for costumes, coming up with fun holiday themed classes or challenges, class questions, or scheduling. They only pay attention to the students attending zoom/ virtual. Don't offer the in person class if you don't pay attention to the kids who actually wanted to come in and attend. Very disappointed when it was my daughters first time to attend a dance class which she was very much looking forward to going. First and last time I will have my daughter attend this studio. I bought 5 Barre Class sessions on Groupon because I have wanted to try Barre Classes for quite some time. It took a few times to get in touch with someone on the phone, but I didn't know that they usually only have someone at the desk after 3:15 in the afternoon. I started class a few days later. I was very nervous because I didn't know what to expect. Susan the instructor was very welcoming and helped me pick out some hand weights and resistance bands for class. She also helped me with the correct form/position so I could get the most out of the exercises. The Barre classes are difficult if you have never done them. However, you feel great after class is over. I also like how much stronger I am and how much weight I am losing. I am someone who works out regularly at the gym. I also do yoga and tai chi. Not only have I noticed the changes in my body sice starting the Barre classes, it has also made my other workouts more effective. read more

This review is for the Cardio Hip Hop fitness class for adults. I have been attending this class for several years. Honestly, it is often the highlight of my week. The music is a great mix of hip hop from the 80's through today. Beth, the teacher, is friendly and wants you to have a great time. I think there are two kinds of dance fitness instructions: former dancers or fitness enthusiasts. Beth is a former dancer, which is one reason I love the class. However, because her background is as a dance teacher, the choreography is more complex than your typical cardio dance class. Many of her moves are unique, so even though I have taken a lot of cardio dance classes Beth has moves I have never seen before. It took me about 3 months to master the steps. I kept coming back because I loved the music, the challenge and intricacy of the choreography, and the other regulars. It is fast paced, which means you get a good workout. Part of keeping it fast paced it that it is a follow along and dance class, not a class where they slowly run through the choreography. Every song has its own choreography and there are at least 10 songs per class. This keeps it interesting for me. It also means that it took me about 3 months of showing up regularly before I felt like I really 'got' the dances. But I also felt such a sense of accomplishment each time I figured out a move. If you love to dance around in your kitchen and can follow basic choreography (grapevine, kick ball step, maybe in a former life you could even do the running man....) you will be fine. This is a great class for someone who loves to dance, wants a heart pumping workout, and enjoys unique and interesting choreography. read more

This review is strictly about spin. I use to love this studio and was a spin class regular. Unfortunately bikes are old and rarely maintained. The room is hardly ever cleaned. Bikes are often out of order. Rubber mat flooring is constantly dirty and the room smells horrible from not being cleaned and the room not having any ventilation...it smells like a dirty locker room. Many spin students have commented on these issues but have fallen on deaf ears. Hence as a result of the neglect,many of the regulars like myself have stopped going and cancelled our membership. This is really too bad because it use to be a great studio and the instructors are amazing. I am giving 3 stars instead of zero since I love the instructors. Hoping the owner reads this and turn things around for the betterment of the studio. read more

Everything about Kick it Up is great! They're such NICE people, and everyone is really willing to help you out and goes out of their way to make sure you're comfortable/not hurting yourself. Just...really excellent. :) I got a deal off LivingSocial or somewhere for 12 classes. I'd been wanting to do spin, but was nervous about going in for the first time having never done it. Kick it Up has an Intro to Spin (call or email them to set up a time!), so I figured that would be the best way to get involved. Turns out, I was right! Intro to Spin is a MUST if you're interested. They teach you how to get on the bike, how to set it up for your height, all the terminology and history, and then you go for a quick 20ish minute trial ride, which will most likely kick your ass. The spin classes are small, which I like. There are only about 15 bikes in the back room for spin, so even on the most crowded day, it's not too bad. Most days, the class isn't full, so you don't have to fight over bikes. I've had almost every trainer who teaches spin, and they're all great, but a special shoutout to Heidi, who is my favorite!! The owner, Susan is out there a lot, teaching classes and manning the counter. I've watched the Zumba classes from the sidelines, and god, those people get a good workout! I can't speak for the dance part of Kick it Up, but every time I've seen one of the dance classes in action, everyone looks happy. Great place, super cheap ($5-10 per session, whaaaat!), and LOW pressure. Just what a gym should be. read more

Ladies...are you tired of going to the crowded meat-market gyms and waiting for a treadmill/elliptical/bike?! Well I've had it! The reason why I joined Kick It Up is the many fitness classes they offer for women. In particular I mainly go there for their morning Spin classes. I also want to try their Barre class and maybe even their Zumba class. The studio is very open and clean. Lots of equipment...comfy bikes. I love that there's a bike for me in the mornings, unlike at the other big gyms like 24hr or LA Fitness. I hated that I had to get to class at least 45 min early to get a bike. Total waste of time. The prices are reasonable. And the staff/instructors are really nice (Susan-owner, Kim, and Judi). read more

Been a member of other gyms and the group classes are crazy busy - get a voucher a week prior? Really 24 hrs Fitness?? This place has good Zumba classes, spinning, and other stuff. It's a good facility though I'd like more mirrors in the back so you know if you are screwing up when they make you turn around. Also, it gets hot and the air sometimes isn't working. Instructors are good, they work all over town at other gyms so they are familiar to those who go to 24 hr nearby. Evening classes are pretty full these days so that kinda sucks. It's hard to get into it when there are people within a 6 inch radius of you. Also, it's a bit hard to see the instructor. Bottomline, there are good instructors, prices are good, and there are less people here than there are at 24 hrs. read more

My girls go to dance here and really like it. They enjoy their teacher and I like what they're learning. The other parents are friendly which makes waiting around for 2 hours a little more bearable. My only issue is there isn't always enough seating but I've never been without somewhere to sit.
