My kids + wanted sushi , I of course, did not. So we found a place that had sushi and other food that may be edible for me. I got the Katsu chicken And everybody else got sushi, tempura, shrimp etc.. (gross) They all liked their food, and I liked the appetizer that my son and I shared the honey-garlic chicken. I don't remember if they were called bites or not but they were just small little round pieces of honey garlic, boneless chicken. They were very good. My Katsu chicken was not very good, the salad was not good, and I don't like miso soup, plain noodles, or anything like that. I'm just really not a fan of Japanese food. But I do know the difference between good Katsu chicken and bad Katsu chicken, and this was not good. It did not taste fresh, it was a little rubbery, it just had something about it that was not right. The outside was light and flaky, though the way it should be. This place was cute inside. There are too many of us to sit in one of the little rooms so we had to sit in the middle, but it was still fine. The service was good, our waitress was nice, and she explained anything that we needed explanation of. The prices weren't too bad, but my food was just not worth what I paid. I will not be able to go back to this place again because I don't eat very much Japanese food and what was there I didn't like

Extremely disappointed in my meal. The photos are not close to what you order. I ordered the assorted sushi combo. The photo advertised showed 9 different types of cuts. I got basically half the selection that they advertised it as. If I knew I would have no ordered this. This is fake advertisement in my opinion.

Aburi scallop dragon

Pretty good sushi, and definitely one of the better ones in the area. Dropped by for lunch and got the salmon tataki (pretty fresh, good thick cut, standard ponzu) and aburi scallop dragon (great price for 10 pieces, ok rice ratio, would have liked more scallop). Seating is half open table, half closed off booths. Service is quick. Cash discount 10% off makes it good value.

Got my sushi fixed from Kibo Sushi!! I ordered the Maki Platter B (which came with 42 pieces) to share with my family. The platter came with 6 pieces of California roll, 6 pieces of spicy salmon, 10 pieces of red dragon, 10 pieces of dynamite roll and 10 pieces of kamikaze. I'm not a fan of mayo based sauce so I opted to have no mayo or spicy mayo on my sushi rolls. Each of their sushi pieces were fresh and good quality. Their were perfect (not too much) rice on each roll. My family and I enjoyed all the rolls (except we weren't a huge fan of the kamikaze roll (tempura style roll that consists of deep fried spicy tuna and avocado roll with spicy sauce). Cause we enjoyed the rolls so much, we ordered the Maki Platter A the next day. This platter is basically all the sushi rolls mentioned above minus the kamikaze roll. I enjoyed this platter so much more! Kibo Sushi is also known for their $5 cash and carry, that's an option if anyone need a quick sushi fix. I'll be trying this one next.

Had intended to have dinner at Descendant for pizza, but when we arrived at 8:45p they said they had run out :( So we decided to try Kibo since it was across the street. Menu felt quite pricey for a la carte items, but the combos were more reasonably priced. We ended up ordering the Love Boat for 2 which comes with 2 miso soups, 2 salads, a bowl of edamame, mixed tempura, and a platter with rolls, sashimi and sushi. The salad was ok but the dressing was quite acidic. The miso soup was salty and not my favourite. The shrimp tempura was not very good - the batter was thick and not fully cooked. The vegetable tempuras had thinner batter though and were better. As for the sushi platter, I enjoyed the salmon sashimi. I usually love rolls, but I didn't like these ones. The spicy salmon roll just tasted like a mouthful of crunch because of the tempura bits. Couldn't even taste the salmon. And the dragon roll was also so-so. The sushi pieces were cut thinner than I'm used to at other sushi places, which I wasn't a fan of. Thankfully, the service here is very friendly and they checked up on us regularly.

Salmon Lover

Quarantine Day 7: Sushi day! I say that I like sushi as part of my identity but I'm pretty sure I only really eat salmon. That means that the Salmon Lover was perfect for me - 6 pieces of spicy salmon maki, 3 pieces of salmon sushi, and 3 pieces of salmon sashimi. I didn't find the maki that spicy. It was very crunchy with all the tempura bits. The salmon in the sashimi and sushi was pretty fresh. Getting enough greens while eating out is tricky. We did get teriyaki and tempura bento. You get a choice of what you want the tempura to made up of. We opted for 2 shrimp and assorted veggies. The veggies we got included eggplant, zucchini, sweet potato, broccoli, and squash. They cut holes in the box the tempura came it so it was still crispy when it got to us. The bento did come with miso soup and a green salad as well. The chicken wasn't the best I've had. The texture kind of reminded me of meatless chicken. Another veggie dish I tried for was the kani salad. I'd say this salad was 90% thin strips of crab (fish?) meat so I kind of failed on the vegetable front. It came with a creamy sauce with celery seeds throughout that was tasty and refreshing.

6 pieces of california and spicy salmon instead of 8 for cash and carry

I love Kibo-- I've never had a bad experience at any of their locations. I am however, disappointed at the level of inconsistency at the Leslieville location. I walked in to grab their 'cash & carry' special, as due to Covid they don't have a fridge area to grab from I had to place the order. Normally for cash and carry it's $5 cash for 8 pieces. Upon receiving my order of California, spicy salmon and dynamite roll-- I was shorted 4 pieces total. I'm not sure if it's because they inadvertently forgot it's the cash and carry special or they're skimming. The point is it's the principle. The lack of consistency is what bothers me the most. Either way I won't be dining in or taking out here again.

Lunch!

Went in during a busy Sunday night and the staff seemed overwhelmed with cleaning, taking orders and serving. It's not a big location, but I think they might have been one person under staffed. We ordered a big sushi platter for takeout. About 30min to wait for it, luckily there is a microbrewery close by. The sushi itself was quite good, better than the average sushi joint. I like the small amount of rice on my sushi and maki rolls and the fish was quite good and fresh tasting. Lots of wasabi and ginger included. We also ordered a takeout bento box with kalbi ribs. They were quite good as well and seasoned well with your typical sides included (soup/salad/maki roll/rice). I would go back for sure, but I wouldn't dine in since it looked overwhelming the short amount of time I was there ordering and picking up my food.

Love boat for two - $43

Came here for a Mother's Day dinner with my parents. Overall it was decent (probably more of a 3.5/5 than a 4/5). The portion sizes were fairly generous but the rice on all the sushi wasn't packed very well and would fall apart when you tried to pick it up. I might come again another time for the lunch specials though, there was a sign outside listing them and there were some great deals.

Sashimi + sushi rolls

Really good sushi rolls and miso soup, but the sashimi was a little small. Still very good value, and the staff was wonderful. We had take out, and it was ready for pick up within 30 minutes, which was impressive considering it was rush hour.

It's my go-to spot to get my don fix - I love the wide variety of dons (rice bowls) that they offer with various fish and seafood combinations. There are also unique appetizers in the menu, such as Purple Yam Croquettes, Crab Crackers, Braised Bamboo Shoots with Shirasu (immature whitebait fish), and Takowasa (marinated raw octopus pieces, to be eaten with or wrapped in nori / seaweed). Although the dons are the main highlight of their menu (hence the restaurant name), they also offer traditional sushi, sashimi, sushi rolls and sets (similar to other Japanese sushi restaurants). Miso Aburi Scallops were very flavourful - nicely torched, giving the scallops a nice grill / char taste. They came with red and green seaweed, and a bit of fish roe. Large Premium Hana Don contained a good amount of fish and seafood, including a whole abalone, uni, shrimp in the shell, aburi salmon, ikura (salmon roe), salmon sashimi, tuna sashimi, yellowtail sashimi, other various fish sashimi, tamago (egg), and a few slices of cucumber on a generous bed of rice. I liked that the rice was a mix of white rice and some type of dark-coloured grains. Unatama Don came with a big piece of unagi and tamago (egg) that were both excellent. The sashimi were all fresh. Okonomiyaki was disappointing but it was sort of expected... for only $9, it was about 99% just flour pan-fried in a patty, without any substantial fillings (unlike real okonomiyaki, which usually contains protein / seafood, cabbage, eggs, and other ingredients). Location is super convenient near Bay & Dundas, ambiance is very casual, and service is quick.

What I really liked was that they had 3 options of warm water - Hot, Warm, and room temperature. Instinctively I knew this place cared about the clients digestive health. Though I'm sure if you asked for ice water, they would accommodate (my friend asked for no sauces in her maki roll). The fishes were plated very pretty and because it's sushi of course it tasted good. But I was surprised at the level of wasabi that was plated. Cleared up my sinuses for 30 seconds. The establishment is very clean and bright and a great place to head to if you're in a rush.

The space itself leans more modern and clean rather than the typical dark, cozy izakaya vibe, which I actually didn't mind. It felt comfortable, not too loud, and easy to settle into for a slow dinner. We ordered a mix of small plates to share, and everything came out looking nicely put together. The aburi-style salmon sushi was one of the highlights for me.. lightly seared, with a soft texture and just enough flavor on top without being overwhelming. The tuna tataki was also fresh and clean, simple but well done. Some of the fried dishes leaned a bit richer with the creamy sauces, but they were still enjoyable, especially if you're in the mood for something a little more indulgent. The beef fried rice was straightforward but satisfying, one of those dishes that's easy to keep going back to between everything else. Drinks were a nice touch too.. refreshing, nicely presented, and added to the overall experience. Overall, this feels like a solid spot for a casual night out with friends. The menu is set up to where you pick the entree and then what type of protein you want out of pork loin, chicken, fish, cheese, and sweet potato cheese. I settled on the sweet chili katsu. A piece of chicken arrived on a plate accompanied with rice and shredded cabbage. The chicken was breaded in a light panko like crumb and was half covered in the sweet chili sauce. I ate a couple of pieces and the crisp texture and flavor was wonderful. I had a bite of rice and when I got to the cabbage to my dismay I found a long piece of hair in it. I immediately lost my appetite and all I could think about was how great the two bites of chicken was. I gave up the plate and showed the staff what I found. They offered another plate a couple of times and after I declined a refund was issued. Katsuya. sucks for serving me one of the best pieces of breaded chicken in my life with hair in the food. I'm struggling to hold back the tears now as I write. I did get to try the parmesan fries which were ok. I also tasted the udon which is not one of their stronger dishes. This probably would have been five stars had it not been for the hair. I know this happens on the rare occasion but probably shouldn't if hair nets are worn. If you do try out this place, expect great katsuya.
