These include joint and muscle pain, extreme fatigue, weakness, chest tightness, breathing discomfort, and a positive ANA (1:80, dense fine speckled pattern). I've gone to the ER due to how intense things have gotten, and I was referred to Dr. Lily Kao by my primary care doctor in hopes of getting support and long-term monitoring, even if a clear diagnosis wasn't immediately available. Unfortunately, both of my visits with Dr. Kao were incredibly discouraging. From the very beginning, she would cut me off mid-sentence while I was trying to explain or list my symptoms. I tried to communicate that my symptoms are constant but fluctuate in intensity. That's even if they don't all show up in lab work, they are very real and disruptive to my daily life. Still, she told me that because my bloodwork didn't clearly point to a specific autoimmune disease, there was nothing she could do. I asked if she could at least monitor me over time in case symptoms progressed -- something many autoimmune patients need -- but she said no and told me to go back to my primary care physician. She also told me that my positive ANA "doesn't mean anything" and that "normal people have it too." The way she said this came across as extremely condescending, especially considering that I do have significant symptoms, which is why I was referred in the first place. I tried to explain that I'm aware ANA is a general test, but that my symptoms are what make it relevant. My primary care physician told me that themselves, which is why I even got referred. She then backtracked, saying she wasn't trying to say I had "nothing", but by that point, it was clear how little she was listening or trying to understand. If you're a doctor, you should know how to communicate without dismissing or belittling your patient. I'm still new to all of this -- navigating a potential autoimmune illness, learning as I go, pushing through constant physical pain and fatigue, and trying to advocate for myself in a system that often doesn't take young women seriously. I wasn't expecting a diagnosis on the spot, just compassion and patience as I navigate through the unknown. Instead, I left feeling invalidated and hopeless. Luckily, I still have a lot of strength and support to not give up. I wish that were the case for everyone though. If you are someone dealing with early autoimmune symptoms, chronic illness, or unexplained fatigue and pain that don't fit neatly into a diagnosis yet -- I would not recommend seeing Dr. Kao. Look for a doctor who will actually listen, ask thoughtful questions, and treat you like a person, not just a lab report.

I started seeing Dr. Berkebile around 2…read moreyears ago now for my MCAS, at the request of my allergist to seek more holistic and natural pathways for treatment since he could only do so much. Previously, I was always met with a laundry list of excuses and medications with equally long lists of side-effects to just treat my symptoms. To say I was done with feeling helpless in my own health journey is an understatement. Finding Naturopathic Family Health - and more specifically, Dr. Berkebile - was nothing short of divine intervention. After our first phone call, I knew that this was the right choice for me. Dr. Berkebile dove in head first to my whole background; where I grew up, how long I had been dealing with MCAS symptoms, etc. She did not immediately throw up medications and road blocks - she listened to my concerns and found symptoms I had no idea were not normal for a 27 year old working in tech. We found my root cause after some testing and began treating that with supplements, lifestyle changes, some changes to my diet, and a focus on remembering that I was making progress - even if I felt I should be seeing faster changes. While it has not always been an upward trajectory because health is not linear, two years later, I am a completely different person health wise, with a pretty strong handle on my MCAS symptoms - something that used to run my life on a daily basis. Truly, words cannot describe the thankfulness and genuine gratitude that I feel towards the help that Dr. Berkebile has been able to give me.

I started seeing Dr. Berkebile a few years ago for infertility support via telehealth. She had…read moreexperience with PCOS which was the main problem that I wanted to address. I saw her a bit late in my infertility journey but I believe her recommendations had a positive influence on my success with IVF and also getting pregnant naturally. She supported me with supplements and made some diet recommendations. By the time I started seeing her, I was already making plans for IVF and very stressed. She took all of that into account and knew the limits on what to recommend to me at that time. She was the only ND that really tailored recommendations to where I was in my path. Another thing that she does well is she really treats the whole person. I was impressed that she addressed my mental health and wellbeing during each visit. The best part, 17 months after my first baby was born, I got pregnant naturally following all of her prior recommendations with supplements and moderate diet changes. Not sure if it was the hormone reset of pregnancy, lifestyle changes or just a miracle but I am thankful!

This is an update from my 5 star review in 2022. Go find a new doctor. I need to find a new doctor…read more Don't get me wrong; this doctor has helped with my medical care. But I think most negative reviews are due to the office staff. The front staff and billing team will try making you pay more. The billing staff called me saying I owed them another doctor's visit; they said I visited them twice, and I didn't pay for the early Oct2024 visit. I had to do their job and tell them to check with the front staff that I ONLY had one visit in late Oct2024, and I paid cash to the front staff. They gave the excuse that there was some IT error with the billing. Make sure you keep notes when you paid because they will scam you into paying more. I feel bad if they scam the elderly patients. I even requested to speak to the doctor to talk about their screwup so it doesn't happen to me again or any patient. But the woman said that I needed to make another office appointment to even talk to the doctor! What a joke. The doctor can't even spare five minutes to call me to apologize for her staff's mistake, or say how they will fix/improve things. No callback ever since. The first time they scammed me into paying more was when I emailed them showing a rash on my arm just asking to refill a current rash cream prescription. They said this requires a specialist to look at. So in the end I paid hundreds of bucks to see a specialist, and the primary care doctor wanted me to pay them for a "doctor's visit."
