We got the vege pad thai and vege panang curry, and I liked how the pad thai is not as sweet as Thai Thai, and more acidic in flavor. We did mild for the pad thai and medium for the curry and they were pretty spicy! The flavors don't compare to my go to spots in Convoy or La Mesa, so I wish I could give a 3.5 but I can't. The Pad Thai with Chicken wasn't for me but I tried it and it was good. I ordered Drunken noodles (Spicy Noodles) and I found it to be on the bland side. The shrimp didn't have almost any flavor and I ended up ending some fish sauce and lemon to jazz it up. There were also no vegetables that are listed in the menu in this dish and the only green thing in it were a couple pieces of basil. I had just exited Food 4 Less (where no quality soup was to be found) and was walking back to my truck when I spotted Khao San Thai on the other end of the parking lot. I dropped my purchases at my truck and headed straight for Khao San Thai. Like a ship following a lighthouse beacon. I knew there was soup to be had. I walked in and was greeted by a very pleasant young woman. She took my order: One large Tom Yum Soup: hot and sour soup with lemon grass, mushroom, tomato, chili paste, lime juice and cilantro sprinkles, I added chicken as my protein. $10.95 no upcharge for chicken. The conatiner was quite large. Enough for both Becky and I to have for dinner and for Becky's lunch the next day. It was delicious. Perfectly hot and perfectly sour. A v e r y generous portion of chicken was added. Thankfully the tomatoes were in huge chunks and easily discarded. I loved the addition of mushrooms. I hate rain. With a passion. We were reminded of this wonderful little place recently after our Italian food outing. And I'm glad we were as it was a nice stop on our way home from Costco. Warning! We ordered mild pad Thai and my mouth was on fire! Needed orange juice to keep the calm! But we enjoyed it. To compliment it we had dumplings which were bland in contrast to the pad Thai! The staff member at the front counter didn't offer any immediate solution or refund - just took down my contact information, saying the manager would follow up. To make matters worse, they suggested I place a new order instead of resolving the issue. Main Problems: * Paid for food that was never prepared * No proactive effort to fix the mistake * Poor handling of the situation Why 3 Stars Instead of Lower? Because I'm giving the benefit of the doubt that this might have been an isolated system error rather than standard practice. Ordered to-go, service was okay. The person taking out order seemed very new and inexperienced so things were on the slower side but that's okay. Unfortunately my order was wrong and I didn't notice until I got home, I ordered a tofu pad thai and it ended up being a tofu fried rice. Tasted good but not what I wanted. Also got a tom kha chicken with the lunch special and that was flavorful and good. Pineapple fried rice was good too. Only other issue was a small egg shell in my rice. I had a tofu pad thai and loved the flavors and nuttiness the peanuts gave, which was different from any other pad thai that I've had before! It had a hint of sweetness and tanginess that I loved and complemented well together. most people say "you can't go wrong with pad thai," and I've known from first had experience that you can... but this one nailed it! I recommend. I shared cream cheese wontons as well and it came with about 8 I believe, and it had a decent amount of cream cheese, but I wish it was folded a bit differently. Because it was folded in a triangle shape, there was a lot of emptiness and air within it, which made eating it a bit odd, and it could have been avoided if it had been folded a bit differently. Maybe this is more of a personal choice, but it was alright. Mango sticky rice was really good. mangos were so fresh and sweet and loved the sticky rice it came with as well. This is my favorite Thai food in Santee! The flavors are just perfect! I typically only order to go here but am always satisfied with my food. I love the pad se ew, tofu fresh rolls, peanut sauce, and red curry. I wished they carried a pumpkin curry but you can't be perfect. I was running errands when I drove past Khao San Thai, and was immediately in the mood for some Thai food. The dining area was modest, but was greeted warmly by a young woman. I was looking for a quick meal, so just green curry and Thai iced tea. The food came quickly, and tasted authentic. It felt like I was invited to someone's house for lunch. I ordered medium spice, and man was it spicy! It wasn't too much, but definitely left me sweating. The sweetness and creaminess helped balance out the spice. This is definitely going to be my go to Thai restaurant I was also impressed by the kindness of the staff. They went out of their way to help a distressed woman that entered the restaurant. First timers. This is the lunch portion Hot Basil with seafood. Comes with a choice of sides, several soups or salads. I chose the Tom Yum soup which comes with a shrimp. There.was a fantastic depth of flavor with a slight sweetness in addition to the usual flavors. Yes, this Tom Yum soup was delicious! Then there was the Hot Basil. Again, excellent flavors! A perfect balance with the shrimp, squid and deep fried fish perfectly cooked! My wife had the Pad Thai and she really liked it. $9.99 for lunch, soup and entree, with mine at $12.99. Fantastic prices for excellent Thai food!!! We started asking questions and now know why the food was to our liking. This is a sister restaurant of Basil Thai in La Mesa. Mom is the chef here in Santee with Dad and other staff at the other location. The chocolate Thai tea was wonderful as well. We will be back. Sooner than later. With all the Thai restaurants here and a change of ownership and flavors at another place in town this is our new go to. I've enjoyed this place 4-5 times now. Tonight I checked to see if they are open, it says they are. I placed an order online, got charged, sent my daughter to pick it up. On her way over there she gets a call to make sure she was getting an order, she said "yes" She gets to Khao San Thai and it's CLOSED for maintenance!! What the scamming what!?? UGH. Food: Spicy noodles, Pad see ew, Pad Thai and definitely the Tom Kah soup... everything was delicious! I do like good Thai food and this place did not disappoint! My wife said this is her new favorite place, and in East County nonetheless! Boba coffee and Thai tea were also good and decently sized. Atmosphere: The ONLY downsides are that you have to order at the counter and the place is a little small, so don't expect to be able to fit a large crowd inside. However, the restaurant looks fairly new and clean inside, so I would not even look twice at this "issue". Service: Our server was great, no complaints there. They were quiet inside, no blaring music or loud TV shoes or anything. They let us order, brought our food and they didn't even rush us out (even though they were closing at 9). Price: It's pretty middle of the road. A good meal is 15$ and add a drink, it can be about 20$. But like I always say, I'm not afraid to pay a little more if the food is worth it. i just want to start off by saying as soon as i walked in it wasn't busy at all, but i noticed an employee in the back cleaning and wiping on counters. it's always good to see workers cleaning and being productive on slow days instead of doing nothing. the cashier was a younger guy, and he had amazing service. especially considering if this is his first job. he offered me a lunch special menu, and asked if i needed any help finding something specific. i got the lunch special spicy noodle (drunken noodles) with chicken. spice level is out of 10 and i got 5, wasn't spicy at all but i could taste the spice. while i was paying i was offered a drink by the cashier and i said just a water. he let me know the estimate of when my food will be out and i sat down. to my suprise i had no idea he was going to come out with a lemon water in a glass. i was fully expecting a water cup. i thought that was a great touch and he handed it to me. everytime i go to thai places i try to order a thai milk tea when available. i have had A LOT of thai milk teas. so i ordered one and it was once again, surprisingly very good. one of the best thai milk teas i ever had. i would ask for light ice next time, but very flavorful tea. balanced taste of the tea and milk, not too milky. i got my food and i had napkins and untensils in my bag which doesn't happen often. the drunken noodles was very flavorful and the chicken was not rubbery at all despite some reviews claiming to be. it came with steamed rice as a side, and you have other options too that isn't rice. it was very good rice, even my mom commented on how good it smelled. overall very good food, amazing service, and good drink options. i will be returning!!! read more
