This was a visit borne of desperation and ordinarily I wouldn't think of this place…read more We were fed up with Christmas turkey, ham, roast beef, pork & chestnut stuffing and salmon. We couldn't face another mince pie or slice of pudding either. Talk about first world problems. It was a cold New Year's Day and I wasn't even sure I'd find a place that was open. The two places I wanted to be open weren't - Soi 9 Thai & Dragon Express - so I ended up here as it was one of two Chinese take outs with lights on. Spice of India on the same almost empty street was open but if you read my review on it you'll see why I opted for Chinese. I didn't know what I wanted to eat but my wife had decided on salted chilli chicken, so when I looked at the menu it had a meal for two deal at £13.80 that included salted chilli chicken so I ordered it. The deal was this chicken meal, chicken fried rice, chicken curry, a tub of curry sauce, cheap and unpleasant, pre prepared prawn crackers and a small portion of chips. The food was a bit better than ok but I couldn't say it was really good so a border line three stars. And while it was ok it's certainly not on my return visit list.

Eight of us rolled in for dinner on a last minute, unplanned visit, and it has been a long while…read moresince we've been. The menu choices hadn't changed very much but the prices have sure increased by 20% 30% in most cases and I'm cynical enough to think that it's not wholly justifiable. I do understand some costs have risen but suspect some price gouging too. We had a range of food: beef and chicken burgers, steaks and a vegetarian. Now pasta and vegetables have not risen 30%. Nor have spuds. The food was excellent, with one annoying exception - the baked Alaska. It was far too granular sugar loaded, the ice cream was mean and poor tasting, there was very little raspberry coulis, the sponge wasn't spongy and still worse it had frozen sliced strawberries within. Clearly the dessert was in the freezer to go to the hot oven in its iron skillet and it woulda worked but for the science. Baked Alaska works as the meringue insulates the ice cream to keep it frozen while the outside browns. So the frozen sliced strawberries benefit from the insulation and also stay frozen. Just stop putting strawberries into a dessert to be pre frozen and add to the dessert post cooking. I won't knock a star for this as it's easily remedied. The service was tip top and the servers were real attentive. One of the attractions of places like this was that you got a bargain so you also went more often but those days are gone and now with prices coming much closer to the top notch places like Fitzpatricks while the food offerings aren't commensurately better just more money it's more likely that folks will go there so price gouging can be counter productive.

A group of us came here for a pre-booked meal one Saturday…read more One server came and took our drinks, followed soon after by another to take the food. This seemed efficient and fairly up-to-speed. Everything was going ok until the food started to arrive out. Cutlery was thrown in the middle of our very long table in a pile. They must have been thinking "help yourselves, because you're not worth us giving table service?". I'd trust this wouldn't happen with tables of 4 or 2, so if you're a larger group, forget about expecting the basics of table service. Grab them yourselves. Food arrived out and very few of us were wowed. I had seafood tagliatelle which consisted of tiny chunks of salmon, a few prawns and 2 crab claws - over-drowned in a thick, sickening creamy sauce. That's what ruined it for me. At just shy of £16 I would have been expecting a)everything to be perfectly cooked in the dish and rationed accordingly, and b) to at least have mussels and maybe even a few clams or a substitute seafood. A friend remarked that his salt & chilli squid was like something from Iceland and the accompanying sauce was horrible. Dessert time, and the menu came framed in an oversized box frame?! Don't get it. A lot of ordered desserts and/or drinks. Again, spoons fired in the middle of the table. They were nice. Drinks never arrived for a lot of us, I reordered mine and then a second one was about to come out (I told the waiter that I wasn't ordering a second, I just never got the first.) They tried to charge for both on the bill which says to me the staff aren't communicating effectively and aren't amending the bills correctly. Overall we were unimpressed and have definitely ruled out going back for any other staff night out we might have. Christmas isn't too far away!

We only order here occasionally and I very much doubt it will even be occasional hereafter. We have our mobile phones through Three so we can avail of occasional wantu deals but even these are limited here in Northern Ireland. I could get a free Costa coffee through wantu in Aberdeen, Cardiff or Cornwall but I can't get one in Belfast or Newry. The wantu app offers a free 7 inch domino pizza but only on Wednesdays so we both turned up in this edge of town place having hit the use now button on the app and receiving a code. We were told at the counter that it was an on-line order only. The app gave no hint that this was only available on line. The app provides an order code. The domino website to order makes it nigh on impossible to figure how to proceed using the wantu deal. I tried and failed. It didn't recognise the code number. We then asked for some help in store and we were ignored. We were just left standing. Several staff were in store, they weren't busy and certainly disinterested in us. I've since gone on line to dominos website to lodge a complaint about zero service. Even this process isn't straightforward when it really should be. It's money only here customers don't matter. If they don't get dough from you then you won't get dough from them.

We just happened to be passing by too about a week later and also decided to give it a go. So we got a fish & chips - cod of course - and the food was top notch. The batter was light and crisp and not greasy. The cod was Persil white, moist and chunky. It was a good portion too. The chips were perfectly cooked too exactly as they should be. The meal was £5. Now there was a downside as I was not offered salt or vinegar. Imagine fish & chips without salt and vinegar. I didn't see either about so while I would ordinarily knock a star off for such howlers I'm not going to because the quality of food and portion size for a fiver is a fair deal and it's only right to be fair right back but I would recommend they invest in salt and vinegar. Finally, as I waited for my meal the guy behind the counter was making what looked like pizza bases and firing them into an oven. They came out like a dinner plate sized cross between a nan bread and a pitta bread and more toward pitta. These were the base for chicken and lamb kebabs and this type of food is just so appealing when it's fresh and good.
