It's oddly quiet and a bit like sitting in a library. American day so far with two Starbucks coffees consumed and now this place. Dunno why it is but I'm in the mood for 'junk' food. Ironically there's a local sandwich bar right next door and the friendly efficient guy who took my one whopper (£3.89) one whopper free has just come in from buying his food next door. I suppose he's been here often enough to want something different. At nearly £4 for a burger it ain't cheap to add fries and a drink it comes out at about £5.50 - so for me it's once in a blue moon and truthfully if it wasn't for the BOGOF I wouldn't have come near the place. While Mc Donald's uses dried rehydrated onions this place uses fresh mild Spanish type and it makes a great positive difference to taste. They also still serve Heinz ketchup and I read somewhere that Mc Donald's either had stopped or are about to stop this brand. Another mistake in my book as it's great quality.

They were really awful rubbish, limp, almost raw tasting but they were potato at least that was discernible and anaemic looking. In fact if someone told me they had only been defrosted not fried and just bagged I'd have agreed. I intend never to return unless for someone else. I read somewhere that Colonel Saunders spent his later life visiting KFC's across the USA and invariably complaining that the food wasn't up to scratch and funnily enough despite looking like his image on the signage few of the workers recognised him. The food was at least cheap and the service was efficient and friendly. I sat for the order and the seating was as uncomfortable as the food was poor.

So I went with my wife as she wanted to try this place, predisposed to disliking bagels. This place is near Maya cafe, a Subway sandwich place and two Pakistani restaurants. My wife chose a bagel deal with chicken & bacon declining the cheese, French fries and a 330ml Diet Coke at just under £6.50. The fries were hot and a good portion, cooked in vegetable oil. I had a piece and found it pretty tasty with chicken breast and well grilled, proper crispy bacon. The service was ace and I wouldn't hesitate to return here for coffee and bagels. Their coffee was pretty good too and good value. I suppose it's an upmarket Mc Donald's meal but a tad pricey given that the next door Spice of India offers a 3 course £5.95 lunch. The downsides are a mix of me being picky with my own quirks. The place is very small. It offers student discount so targeting them but not pensioner discount and it gives its bagels American titles like Tennessee. No disrespect to our American cousins but what's wrong with wheee we live; Down, Antrim, Armagh? Oh and bagels can't be legendary. Here they are just fast food.

I asked for king prawn salt & chilli with noodles and a salt & chilli chicken with fried rice. Both meals cost £14.30. As it was my first visit I emphasised that the meals must be dry. He confirmed yes. I insisted the prawns had only a light batter, a small amount of chilli and he said that the batter is light. On reaching home neither dish was dry rather they were an oily, sugar/water solution. I guess each meal had at least a half dozen spoons of white sugar - this is poor, cheap rubbish stuff. The meals also came with copious amounts of scarce cooked onions. Neither chilli dish contained a scintilla of fresh red chilli. Again this is food where no expense is spent - the idea is to make the cheapest rubbish possible to maximise all important profits and to heck with the customer or their health. Being sugary wet the king prawn batter which was a heavy batter (not light) became wet and soggy very fast. As was the case here. The prawns were also well over cooked. The fried rice was very good though and I didn't open the noodles. Living in a city where we have only crap rip off Chinese places has become tedious.

We rang ahead. We placed an order for four meals on a Christmas Eve evening - sort of a family tradition to get takeaway food as we prepare all the food for Christmas Day and St Stephen's day. We were told to hold off 30 minutes when our order was taken. This turned out to only suit the takeaway and at the expense of the quality of the already below average food - so sod the customer - only taking our money mattered. The bill for four main dishes - 2 chicken & fried rice, a 4 in 1 and one prawn with noodles was just over £33 and not nearly worth it. It was clear that our food sat cooked and lidded for quite a while. I ordered king prawn salted chilli with noodles. The (10) prawns were fairly ok and had we only waited 10 minutes to collect they likely would have been fairly good but battered prawns don't benefit from sitting in lidded tinfoil for 20 minutes. I also tried a piece of the salted chilli chicken which was really awful. Both of the dishes I tried were far too liberally salted, with no discernible fresh red chilli in sight and to make matters still worse my noodle side was cold. There's not one Chinese takeaway in Newry that serves up good takeaway food and we've now tried plenty. They aren't shy in always charging cash, almost always refusing credit cards and always pitching at top prices. I used to go to the Mayflower takeaway but it's now really rubbish quality so I've abandoned Newry based Chinese and mostly go to Oriental Red in Warrenpoint, which is consistently good but it wasn't practical to go Christmas Eve. I'm unlikely to return to Happy Villa again as it's just another well below average overpriced takeaway to join the list of well below average Chinese takeaways in Newry and surrounding area so if you have an air fryer try M&S factory takeaway mains and boil your own rice. I got my usual king prawn salted chilli with boiled rice and my wife opted for chicken sweet & sour. The prawn dish was excellent. It was a decent portion and it was well flavour balanced between spice & salt. It did not have the acrid burn from those places on Monaghan Street who use dried chilli from jars and unlike these places there was actual fresh red chilli in the dish. It's hard to believe that many Chinese takeaways in town don't add fresh chilli to spicy dishes but have the cheek to charge top prices. The boiled rice too was perfectly cooked. I did not really like their sweet and sour sauce though as it was like a light vinegary gel really so it needs work. I only noticed as I was leaving that they offered dishes line salt & chilli pork chop available in another Chinese Restaurant just down the street so they must have common ownership.
