I got my usual king prawn salted chilli with boiled rice and my wife opted for chicken sweet & sour. The prawn dish was excellent. It was a decent portion and it was well flavour balanced between spice & salt. It did not have the acrid burn from those places on Monaghan Street who use dried chilli from jars and unlike these places there was actual fresh red chilli in the dish. It's hard to believe that many Chinese takeaways in town don't add fresh chilli to spicy dishes but have the cheek to charge top prices. The boiled rice too was perfectly cooked. I did not really like their sweet and sour sauce though as it was like a light vinegary gel really so it needs work. I only noticed as I was leaving that they offered dishes line salt & chilli pork chop available in another Chinese Restaurant just down the street so they must have common ownership.

So I got a vegetable curry which was good and a salted chilli chicken similarly good. The fried rice was really poor because the soy sauce used was chemical rubbish and without any egg in it. The 'free' prawn crackers were a miserable portion and tasted of cooking oil. Starters have now risen in price (again) to be what main dishes cost just a few years ago and mains prices are just silly now for what is at best very average Chinese fast food and this place is one of the better ones. It's really not worth it anymore. I also get that feeling that I'm subsiding JustEat and I really don't want to do that. If I pay by cash I want discount and I want better quality food. I was in M&S yesterday and bought a few of their mains Chinese dishes as they are so very good. Most important we know what's in them. They also have a crispy beef dish and a black bean dish that certainly easily match anything from a local takeaway and the sauces they do like sweet chilli, lemon and sweet & sour are much better than the takeaways by some way. I tried the Chinese menu with crispy chilli chicken and a red Thai chicken curry and it was quite good. Just on the strength of this experience alone I think it's one of the better Chinese takeaways around. Now this is going to sound weird but the chilli chicken actually had sliced of fresh red chilli - most Chinese in town use dried chilli flakes which make for an overly hot almost acrid heat to produce the cheapest food possible while hiking prices twice in the last year or so and that's how bad things are these days. It's now my go to Chinese take away. I will review in s few weeks after I have a few more dishes under my belt but things are looking up.

Now I don't need the fifteen pence absolutely not no it was the sheer gall of her doing so. I wouldn't get away with offering fifteen pence less if I put an order in and was short by this sum. I was in a Chinese Restaurant in Belfast just a few days before. I go there quite often and usually tip. My bill was £50.10. I handed over two £50 notes and guy behind the counter counter me out £49.90 in change. So I'll never return to this Newry place and won't tip again in the other.

It's a normal enough Chinese takeaway, and the service is quick and efficient, and at the same time the prices are reasonable too. We ordered the honey chilli chicken and the beef curry - they were lovely! I'm not normally a fan of beef, but my husband was going on about how tender the meat was so I sampled a bit - it was really lovely. The portions are a good size too, so it's good value for money. The honey chilli chicken was nice too, not as good as some others I've had and a little too heavy on the chilli for me but was tasty enough and the rice was fresh and wasn't reheated - as you do tend to find in some Chinese takeaways.

I asked for king prawn salt & chilli with noodles and a salt & chilli chicken with fried rice. Both meals cost £14.30. As it was my first visit I emphasised that the meals must be dry. He confirmed yes. I insisted the prawns had only a light batter, a small amount of chilli and he said that the batter is light. On reaching home neither dish was dry rather they were an oily, sugar/water solution. I guess each meal had at least a half dozen spoons of white sugar - this is poor, cheap rubbish stuff. The meals also came with copious amounts of scarce cooked onions. Neither chilli dish contained a scintilla of fresh red chilli. Again this is food where no expense is spent - the idea is to make the cheapest rubbish possible to maximise all important profits and to heck with the customer or their health. Being sugary wet the king prawn batter which was a heavy batter (not light) became wet and soggy very fast. As was the case here. The prawns were also well over cooked. The fried rice was very good though and I didn't open the noodles. Living in a city where we have only crap rip off Chinese places has become tedious.

The oily satay chicken was merely poor. The chilli heat was acrid heat in all three so it was just unappetising, bordering on inedible and not a bit of fresh red chilli in sight. A bit of fresh chilli won't break the bank but the whole ethos these days in many places is to make food as cheap and cheerless as possible. Only money matters and the fact the food is substandard is immaterial to them. The prawn batter was tacky and sticky, and it was just unpleasant. The King prawn dish contained fine sliced vegetables which were predominantly onion, then celery, green pepper and carrot. Once the prawn and veg was taken from the plastic container there was a residual pool of vegetable oil (see photo). Six tablespoons of oil. The fried rice was tacky too, it certainly was not boiled and left to go cold and lose its starch before being fried. The only decent bit was the free prawn crackers which were the better quality brand so it gets two stars as I feel generous. Pity they didn't think to make the main meals good quality too. I noted they had an overpriced two course lunch (£8) but I won't return and I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone. There's always M&S Chinese ready meals to fall back on.

Someone I trust encouraged me to give it a try and this was just a few weeks ago so I got one dish. We've gone there three times in the last month as the food is so good. Still not as good as Red Panda and a few other places in Belfast but darn good locally. I don't know any other Chinese takeaway in the city that comes close to this place as over the years I've seen prices increase unjustifiably year on year with quality nose-diving. It may be a change in staff here I don't know but there's only one thing they need to do now - their prawn crackers are the cheaper product. They just need to improve the quality of these but I wouldn't mark them down for this.

First things first; we don't have any great Chinese takeaways in the Newry or Banbridge area. I've…read moretried most of them. There's one or two that I know to avoid. There are those just at or above average and those that go toward pretty grim. This one is usually just above average but last night it slipped a bit. Our order varies between two and four people. Last night it was for three at £19 so the prices aren't very high. But with gas and oil dropping hugely it's time to see prices coming down as they were quick to put them up when gas prices rose. Had I sent £1 more if get a 1.5 litre of soft drink. We always order king prawn salt & chilli and salt & chilli chicken. Both these dishes last night were far too salty and too spicy. Just not pleasant really. I'm not going to mark it down for this as most times it's not that bad. The bewildering thing about this is it's usually the same cooks so I don't get the inconsistency. The portions are generous too with 10 king prawns and lots of salted chicken pieces too. Downsides are the same and found across a number of local takeaways with anything chilli being the cheap sharp dried flakes there's not a piece of fresh red chilli to be had. Local Chinese takeaways serve up a mass of lightly fried onions and green peppers in almost every dish - red peppers are the same price now and much sweeter, so time to change to red! Another unwelcome, all to common bad thing, is this habit of drowning food in cheap sauce; sweet and sour or black bean is meant to be a coating around meat or fish not a container full of liquid with meat or fish swimming in it. Most of the Chinese takeaways in the area give free prawn crackers when you spend about £10 but in every case these are the cheapest brand of cracker and they are pretty lousy eating. Finally the one sauce that is darn poor here is the sweet & sour and that's a pity but fixable.
