This review is for the Bayers Lake location…read more 1) Lost 2 stars for poor customer service and lack of information: We walked in at 7:00 p.m. to try their Friday trivia night. (We had called to book a table for trivia and when we walked in, they said no need to reserve--it doesn't get that busy. That should have been a warning.) We sat down for our meal. By 8:30, the first round of trivia had only concluded (this is considered slow--more on that below). That's when the server came by and grumpily asked if one of the people our party was 19 or over (he's 18). When we said no, she said he had to be out of there by 9:00. She didn't think to tell us this at 7:00, knowing we were there for trivia? No signage anywhere on the premises saying "Patrons under 19 have to leave by 9:00 p.m."? What kind of short-sighted policies do they have here? They were happy to take our money and not tell us that we'd have to leave by 9:00, knowing that we wouldn't be able to finish trivia. 2) Lost 1 star for slow and uninteresting trivia. Questions were read straight from a card by a host who didn't seem interested and didn't engage with his audience. He read each question slowly about three times, hence the s-l-o-w pace where it took 30 minutes for one round that didn't even have audio or video clues. The lack of players should have been our clue that this trivia event is not a success. 3) Lost 1 star for loud, eclectic ambience--this place doesn't know what it wants to be. The trivia was taking place at the same time as music on the speaker and sports TV were playing, all jumbled together at the same time. Maybe that's why the host had to repeat each question slowly several times. But hey, if you want to watch baseball while answering questions about Thomas the Tank Engine and listening to Mumford and Sons simultaneously, this is the place for you. If the food were good, it could save this place, but nope, just mediocre fare that could be served at any pub. And don't get me started on the quick little brown movement we saw out of the corner of our eye, darting under the dining tables. We know it's common for restaurants to have this problem, but flagrantly in the dining room while we were eating makes it easy to warn everyone we know never to come here. Solid nope, nope, nope for this place.

I was wanting a quick bite before meeting coworkers for a drink, and Iron Rooster fit the bill. The store was quiet for a Friday evening, and the lone staff member doubled as both server and cook. The menu is somewhat lean (figuratively speaking, as it's more vegetable-adverse than KFC!), with familiar fried chicken items like wings, drumsticks, house-made popcorn chicken, strips and a chicken burger. Sides are equally deep fried and brown. I wish the menu would lean more into more obviously Asian versions of fried chicken, but a couple such options do show up, with the Beijing chicken wrap and a curry chicken bowl (effectively karaage don). I ended up going with Combo Meal A, which gives you the option of a chicken burger or the Beijing wrap, and fries or a couple chicken wings. Unsurprisingly, I went for the wrap and did not double down on chicken, opting for the fries instead. I was eating-in, so my food came as it was ready. The fries came in the now very common, mini-deep-fryer basket, with a decent amount of golden brown fries filling it. They were crispy-coated, so a bit of a cop-out in this golden age of hand-cut fries, but hey, they were still wonderfully crisp, hot and fluffy! Oh, and I got a garlic seasoning on them as well, so they had some more oomph. The wrap soon followed, rolled up in paper that has some very cute branding! It wasn't huge, with a couple chicken strips, pickled cucumber, green onion, and a sweet and salty, teriyaki-esque sauce. The flavours all kind of worked though, and the pliable wrap (not sure what its origins were, as it seemed too stretchy to be a standard wheat tortilla) held up well. The chicken's crispness suffered from the sauce and self-steaming, but these things happen. My second visit had me stopping in before a trivia night with friends, and this time I went for the half-sized portion of Cornish hen, once again getting fries for my side. There were a few takeout orders ahead of me in the queue, but it wasn't too long of a wait. My basket of fries came out first, and the crispy coating and garlic seasoning were just as good as last time. It was a bit longer for my chicken, but it was worth it. The batter was good and crispy, the meat tender and juicy, and it was an ongoing battle between my hunger and self-preservation instinct from the hot-out-of-the-fryer chicken. Interestingly, the chicken is cooked as one solid piece, as being broken down into its constituent parts would have made for a better coating-to-meat ratio, and it would cook quicker too. My chosen side sauce of honey garlic added further flavour and a contrasting hit of sweetness. Service on both visits was very friendly and helpful. Sometimes you just have to scratch that itch for fried chicken, and Iron Rooster has got your fix.

There was a small surge of BBQ places in Halifax in the 2010s, and while that eventually died down, it's good to see the trend spread elsewhere to add new kinds of cuisine to other areas of the province. The interior is spacious, with a bar at one end, a section with several booths, and even more tables beyond that. The décor isn't over-the-top with southern US kitsch like many barbecue joints and could easily pass for a regular bar and grill. Normally when I try a BBQ place for a first time, I go all-in on a sampler platter to try as many of the smoked meats as possible. Alas, Belly Up is the only BBQ place that I've been to that doesn't have this option. As a result, I went with the beef brisket platter since that's more unique to Belly Up, and things like ribs and pulled pork can be found at many restaurants these days. It wasn't too too busy when I arrived and most people were already eating, so my food arrived in quick order. The brisket came as two long, thick slices, and the broad layer of fat on top told me I was getting the fatty end of the brisket. There was a bit of a smoke ring around the edges, although I didn't find that it had a prominently smoky flavour. It was spot-on for tenderness though - the meat broke apart easily, but didn't crumble from being overcooked, and each bite was tender and juicy. You get a choice of a few different sauces with your meat (which is served entirely on the side) and the chipotle sauce was savoury and not *too* sweet, but again, I'd prefer a heavier level of smokiness from the namesake pepper. You get two different sides with each entrée, so again I went with some of the more unique options - the corn fritters and the apple coleslaw. The corn fritters were very well executed - crisp on the outside, fluffy and moist on the inside, and with a hint of sweetness. The ginger and jalapeno honey sauce that came with them was also a surprise hit, with a good balance of sweetness and subtle layer of heat. I generally prefer a vinegar-based dressing for my coleslaw to cut through the rich dishes that it's often paired with, but I still enjoyed Belly Up's apple slaw. The additional crunch and sweetness of the julienned apples brought some complexity to what is often the most forgettable part of a meal, and honestly it's just nice to see a slaw that's done in-house instead of coming out of a five-gallon bucket from Sysco. Service was friendly and attentive throughout my meal. There's definitely some tweaks that Belly Up could do to polish their BBQ game, but it's a still a solid option for something different in the food scene in Truro.

Full slab rib plate - juicy tender ribs with really sensational seasoning and light sauce. Love the house bbq sauce our order came with. Basket of cornbread - really dense cornbread which is unusual but I like the taste and texture. Lots of onions though so if you don't like that well too bad. TWO meats - Beef Brisket - falling apart so delicate and good 1/4 BBQ chicken breast - again nicely done Large Mac n Cheese - a little spice hit I enjoyed but the kids didn't like it.
