Let me just start by saying: Keys Cafe has ruined biscuits & gravy for me -- in the best possible way. Because now nothing else compares. Nothing. I've peaked. The biscuits? Fluffy, warm, and so fresh you'd think someone's grandma is in the back whispering prayers over the dough. They come out steaming, soft in the center, with that perfect golden exterior that holds up to gravy like a damn champion. And the gravy... listen. I don't know who's in charge back there, but this was buttery, perfectly seasoned, full of actual sausage, and the ideal thickness -- not that heavy, gluey kind that makes you rethink your order, and not watery either. Just... right. Goldilocks would weep. The hash browns? Crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside, and somehow not greasy at all. I don't know how they pulled that off. Witchcraft? Voodoo? This is probably my favorite keys location. Friendliest staff and good food with amazing portions. I got the corned beef hash here and it was SO good. I loved the giant chunks of corned beef in it. I also tried the banana bread French toast and I loved it!! Also had to get and orange juice. I ended up paying over $30 but I had left overs so I guess the price was pretty reasonable. Delish! You can never go wrong going to Keys Cafe for breakfast and/or lunch. They have several different locations across the metro and this was our first time checking out the one in WBL. We had to wait roughly 20-25 minutes but were able to roam around to other shops in WBL while we waited. The server we had was great and very efficient checking up on us frequently. The place isn't huge inside so keep that in mind when heading over here. The menu is fabulous especially for this gluten free girl. I went with the BLT + Avocado sandwich (gfree bread) and upgraded to a side salad with French which was incredible fresh and delish. Hubby got the combo and he is obsessed with their wild rice soup. A charming cafe in downtown White Bear Lake. I normally don't like diner food, but I thought the variety and portions for the price here were pretty good. We parked in the lot across the street and entered through a side door after going down a hallway to the hostess stand. That's a bit different. The place was bigger than I expected based on the front of the restaurant. I got the banana bread French toast and a side of eggs. Also tried their biscuits with gravy and hash browns. I wouldn't get the banana French toast again since the combo didn't really work for me (the banana bread overpowered the dish) but the biscuits and hash brown are excellent sides I would order again with a different main dish. read more

I know Keys is a staple and for good reason - I've been quite a few times over the years and it never changes - the menu really is great! Staff are usually very kind as well and service is fast. They don't let you do reservations so depending on when you go the wait can be quite long and it can get crowded and loud. Recently (I assume because of COVID) they have you enter through the side area through a hallway and then exit out the front where you check out. My low stars is because their menu never changes, they aren't really evolving with the times. There is no dairy free creamer (that I'm aware of) or any real vegan options on the menu. When I go I have to get the potato plate (hash browns with veggies) without the cheese and the servers are always confused by it (it's a hash brown plate with steamed vegetables...not that great). I love me some hashbrowns and feel obligated to get more than just that so I don't look like even more of a freak, the vegetables are OK but most of them go home to be fed to the chickens since they are all very bland and flavorless. Their spring special menu did have avocado toast but it came with eggs and I wasn't going to have my family pay for literal toast for $16. I did see gluten free items on the menu so that's nice for those folks. read more

However, my son and his girlfriend went on July, 24, 2024 and were charged a $1.98 menu card price? Hopefully this review reaches the owners. I have been coming to this location for the past 4 years. The chicken fried steak with that seriously amazing gravy was my go to. I dreamed about it. Why on EARTH would you change it? It was liquid gold. I came back to eat here after some time away I came with two friends I ripped and raved about this place. It wasn't good. You guys didn't even change the menu description so when I read it I'm like yep that's what I want ! So good! When the waitress brought it out I noticed immediately it didn't look the same it had chunks and I tasted it and was really disappointed. You subbed it for a pork sausage gravy and you didn't even write that down for people who don't eat pork! Like us! So misleading and when I brought it up to the waitress she acknowledged that the recipe was changed and no longer make the gravy. I told her I didn't like it and we don't eat pork. She said nothing. I put the plate to the side and it sat there for the entire meal. She didn't offer any resolution or take it off the tab. She charged us for it. I did call in and speak to the manager and suggest starting with changing the menu and also we would have appreciated the item comped from the bill. Really great service and food. They were extremely accommodating of our sudden change of group size from 6 +toddler to 8 + toddler, then providing such friendly and attentive service. I like the new separate entry/waiting area. I was seated pretty quickly at a nice corner table. The upholstery needs replacing so it's firmer and you don't sink down. I love the tables throughout the place, a nice old fashioned feel. I love the variety of the house chocolate cake as far as sizes go and I got the smallest one for home. I ordered a salmon, cream cheese scallion omelet. I love all three ingredients. To my surprise the salmon wasn't sliced or even in small pieces or chunks, but totally mashed into the cream cheese. It's not a consistency I was expecting and I sent it back. I ate the whole wheat toast which was buttered pretty good. The star was the thoroughly cooked hash browns. Really delicious and they charged me for the senior portion. So I won't fault them for my ordering the wrong thing. I wish they had more omelet choices for the senior breakfast menu. I got a pepsi and to my surprise it's served in a plastic bottle. No pop on the gun. The soup was their famous bisque. I like that they use the Morning Star brand of coffee, it's so good. The best Keys Cafe location in all of the Twin Cities. Delicious food of all kinds and GREAT desserts that you're surrounded by as you leave the restaurant. The ambiance feels very homey, and the service is always so friendly and quick. Food portions are HUGE (especially for breakfast), so make sure you come here on an empty stomach. By the way, I highly recommend the Everything Omelet - it's the BEST. Their strawberry jam is amazing too. I'd like to think that this is probably one of the best breakfast places in the Twin Cities too. A heads up to knuckle heads like myself: there's two doors to this place. One is the entrance and the other is for leaving. Simply see the big yellow sign that says entrance. Don't be a dingus like me and try asking for a table at the checkout counter. Overall, excellent place to eat. Classic cafe dinner with some absolute gems on their menu. Started with the pecan roll and it was very good! Nice light and fluffy roll that wasn't overly sweet. The salmon Benedict is perhaps one of the best Benedict's I've ever got! The smoked salmon on it was some of the best salmon I've had around the cities. I would highly recommend and it's definitely a 5/5! I sampled my wife's potato etc. and it was ok. She never adds salt to her food but she found she was reaching for the table salt. It did have a good variety of veggies but just not well seasoned. A coworker suggested breakfast at Keys and it was about a mile from our hotel so the location was super convenient. The White Bear location is on a Main Street with both street parking and a lot across the street. As you walk in, the pastry display gets your mouth watering. We had a group of 7 and were seated immediately. Coffee was made available immediately from a friendly server. The place was clean, a bit rustic and had a hometown feel. The menu had plenty of breakfast offerings to choose from and I opted for the Eggs Benedict. They were served with hash browns which were cooked perfectly, eggs had a runny yolk and the muffins were toasted just right. Hollandaise was decent but I've had better. Others In Our group had pancakes, omelettes with no complaints. Pricing was reasonable. If you are in the area, check this place out for diner fare with Minnesota hospitality. read more

Of all the Keys Cafe locations we've visited, I like this one the best so far. It was much more warm and inviting. It really seemed like a neighborhood hangout and popular breakfast place. I'm sorry to say, but the other Keys locations we've tried have not seemed as comfortable, welcoming or popular. The front display case is full of delicious looking baked goods. Maybe next time I will have room to try one! Food-wise, it was good. I tentatively ordered the biscuits and gravy and was pleasantly surprised. My plate was loaded with a generous portion -- four smallish biscuits covered in sausage gravy, very crunchy hashbrowns and two eggs the way I requested them. The eggs were cooked well. I also got a side of toast, which was really yummy, especially with the house jam. My husband got a grilled bacon and cheese sandwich with a beef barley soup. He said it was good. I think overall, it's a really solid diner/cafe type place. Nothing that will blow your mind but a very good quality meal. Coffee was nice and strong and served in big mugs. Service-wise, I have to say things were lacking. Our server was friendly and she took our order correctly. But I would say she was inattentive. It took a long time for her to come greet us, a long time to get our food, we had to flag her down for a coffee refill, she didn't notice we had no cream left on the table and we had to ask for that too, water refills were scarce, etc. And I was somewhat annoyed when she spotted someone she knew and plopped down in their booth with them for a chat. Sorry, but if you've got a slammed restaurant and are already doing a mediocre job of tending to your section, it's not time for social hour. In addition, there is a bit of disorganization in the front of the house between new people lining up to be seated and departing guests lining up to pay at the register. We experienced this when we walked in since we were unsure where to go to be seated, and we experienced it on the way out as well, when it took us at least 10 minutes to actually pay and get out the door. The woman paying in front of us was using a gift card, and there was an issue with processing the payment correctly. One little snafu and it brought the entire front of the house to a stand-still. The girls at the register tried their best, but it was not a great way to end an otherwise decent meal. So -- foodwise, pretty solid. Service and organization wise, not so much. But we would definitely stop back just on the merit of the food. read more

This is a cute & fun place to come when bicycling around the White Bear Lake area (our group has worked it into our ride-they have always been very accommodating to our large group). Here's the thing... this place has a reputation that precedes itself. I know that it is family owned and they have been in business for a long time. But I'm walking away very underwhelmed. I've always liked Keys but I'm pretty annoyed with my experience yesterday. My friend went to pay her bill and the hostess asked if she would like to add a tip. She added $5 on a $30 bill. As someone that's worked in a restaurant, I winced a little at hearing a less than 20% tip, but whatever; my friend didn't realize. However, the hostess made a comment about how she "can't afford more than a 20% tip." The food was fine. We did all get our food at different times which was kind of odd. Also, we looked over at a table with a few kids, and one of the children was opening the syrup bottle with his mouth. Parents and servers both ignored it. read more

I was very disappointed in my experience at Keys WB today. The most disappointing thing was almost all the waitresses (plus saw one cook) were wearing a 'face-shield' but one that was so small it was doing absolutely nothing. The hostesses and cashier were wearing masks that were at least keeping their germs in. My biscuit and gravy meal lacked gravy and was very dry. The poached eggs came on the side and had water in the bowl (never have seen this). My husbands meal was OK too. The good thing about Keys is it is quick and they get you in and out fast. In addition, they make great baked items. They were out of baked rolls, but highly recommend these if they're available while you're there. read more
