Kevin and his crew worked to replace window trim and siding which experienced dry rot on our 3-story condo building. He also built a cabinet with locking mechanism for our water controls. He identified why dry rot had occurred, and then proposed a solution that would alleviate the issue in the future. Working with Kevin and everyone on his team has been a wonderful experience. He is very busy like everyone in construction these days but when he has a chance to meet with you he is patient and kind and does not try to sell you on any unnecessary changes. Ed who works in the office and is a primary point of contact is also very thorough, responsive, and respectful. Half of our house has original single pane windows and half has been updated at different times with varying hardware. Kevin explained although the hardware looks old the windows are only about 20 years old and if well maintained could last a lifetime. He came up with great ideas such as swapping out old harware and only needing to update the single pane windows with custom double pane so little to none of the frame would need to be replaced and will keep the original character of the home. Given that we were having moisture issues in the house Kevin was very knowledgeable and explained many things to us to help us make the best decision. So far we have had one broken skylight replaced and are working on preparing for the other windows. The guys showed up on time. Tarped and covered everything necessary and were very polite and efficient. It is great to support a local small business and to have such a custom experience. He was probably aged between 25-30, of Latino decent, with hair either in a ponytail or just slicked back. He was leaning out the passenger side window to leer and catcall. We just had (nearly) all the windows in our 1860s pre-Victorian house replaced (total of 22) by Kevin McLaughlin and crew and want to add to the chorus of rave reviews. Because we did not know where to go to find a company that could replace the exact look of these old windows, yet give us the double panes we wanted, we turned to Yelp. So glad it allowed us to find Kevin McLaughlin. Most of the windows/frames were original to the house, in some cases even the glass had never been replaced. Consequently, many were in bad shape. Though we were skeptical, Kevin assured us, in his very modest way, that we would be happy with the finished product. And...we are! He used mahogany to make the frames, the best choice in his opinion because of its strength. Though a bit more expensive, they will, no doubt, last another 150 years and probably more. He used the ropes/weights system that was used in the original windows, so they don't look like newly replaced windows but windows that were installed when the house was built. Exactly what we wanted. In fact, the inspector who signed off on the project, was impressed by the O.G. lugs, which were reproduced by hand, keeping intact the original look of the windows on the exterior of the house. Someone else mentioned that the process was painless and we heartily agree. We thought the house would be in chaos but that was not the case, though much adjustment was needed in the installation process due to the age of the windows. All of them were done from the inside and at the close of day, everything was clean. We very much appreciated Patrick's (the foreman) work ethic, his professional manner and his consideration. At the end of the job, we told him and his very nice assistant, Ben, that we appreciated not having had to listen to loud music, in fact no music/radio at all. He told us that aside from respect for the clients, the job required utmost concentration and listening to the radio would be a distraction. We also have to mention Vince, who did the scheduling, who helped with the hardware and who always answered our telephone calls. Another great find through Yelp! The windows in the house that I purchased were rotted out to the core. They were newer windows (8yrs old) that weren't installed correctly. I heard that it happens more often than not. I wanted the job done right with the best materials and after reading Yelp reviews went with Kevin. Kevin and team replace every window in my house and installed a French door system in my family room and did a top notch job. Not a small project. For the rear he recomended Marvin windows. For the rest of the house he built custom douglas fir windows in his shop. Kevin is the consumate window craftsman. He was extremely knowledgeable and meticulous from start to finish. Everything was done according to a strict schedule and came in under the qouted price (which never happens.) In addition, Kevin is a great guy to work with. He's reserved, friendly and very honest. We looked around for a while to find someone that could make some windows of exactly the same style as we had, all in wood, using the same rope/weights system and with double pane. I can't recommend Kevin and his work enough! I bought my first place and the bedroom noise was louder than I had even expected. Kevin came over and gave me an honest assessment and a very fair quote. I liked and trusted him. Even though he said it would take him a few months to finish (because of other worked lined up), I gave him the job. Windows were perfect. He made custom trim and windows that matched the current design exactly (my windows face the front of early 1900s building and they had to look EXACTLY the same). HIGHLY RECOMMENDED- Kevin McLaughlin is an amazing craftsman with a shop of skilled hardworking craftsmen. They do great work at a fair price. Kevin replaced all of our 1953 single glaze windows with custom dual glaze, low -e windows wood windows. They preserved the sills; which meant no stucco repair; no making the openings larger or smaller. This maintained the architectural integrity of our mid century house. The windows are made from kiln-dried, vertical grain Douglas fir. It doesn't get any better than that. These windows will most certainly out last me. Now our house is warmer, quieter, and our artwork won't be faded by the sun. They also did a great job of replacing many of our original doors that were in bad shape. Kevin and his crew did a great job replacing all my upstairs windows. Once a few of the windows were torn out, additional damage was found extending down the wall and into the first floor roof. Kevin stopped his work so that the roof could be replaced and the damaged wall could be repaired. Once the first floor roof was replaced and wall repairs made, Kevin was promptly back on the job and completed the window replacement and stucco wall replacement. My husband and I employed Kevin to replace the two sets of front bay windows in our century-old home in San Francisco. Kevin took care of everything, including obtaining the permits. We had two problems starting out. The first was that our house is listed by the planning department as "architecturally significant" and anything done on the front of the house has to look original. The second was that after 100 years of settling nothing is square, especially the windows. The windows fit great due to the fact Kevin spent an hour carefully measuring and they look fantastic. They look just like the original ones must have when they were new. He and his crew always showed up on time and as scheduled. They put down drop cloths and covered all carpeting and furniture and carefully cleaned up after the day's work. I recommend him and will use him again. read more

We learned about Kevin McLaughlin from the folks who owned our condo before us. He'd put in 3 windows for them and we wanted to find out who'd done them because they're beautiful. For us, he put in 3 huge french windows and a new door to our backyard. They're all absolutely gorgeous--mahogany frames, perfectly crafted, and a good deal, considering. We got 3 estimates and Kevin's was the highest by only a few hundred dollars. He uses much better materials and the quality of his work is so high that he clearly gives the best deal. The guy who came out to do the installation, Brian, is compulsive in the best sense. He spent 7 hours just hanging the door so that it would be perfect. We couldn't be happier with the results. The only possible problem would be if you're on a tight schedule. Getting responses to emails and phone calls can take a while, and it might take a few weeks before Kevin can come out to give an estimate, but he's well worth the wait. Plus, he's a completely decent guy and a pleasure to work with, as are Vince and the other guys in the office. read more
