Loved the vibe here! Have been thinking how I would be able to get their hojicha powder for days now but ordering online means paying $11.00 for shipping...what..! Anyway I made my way there to try their hojicha latte and the rest of the menu was so enticing I had to get another drink. We settled on buckwheat latte and the hojicha latte with whole milk. The buckwheat latte was so so so good, it's my new favorite thing! I had to google if it was ok for diabetics and if there's caffeine in there and thankfully there's no caffeine and it's fibrous, low on the glycemic index. This is the perfect drink for those looking for something different. The hojicha latte was also good as they were able to make it unsweetened. The drinks are quite small though, but otherwise a perfect experience. And I left with a pack of their hojicha powder for about $35. It's much larger than I anticipated because the blue bottle hojicha powder was around the same price but in a small metal tin. Highly recommend!
Pretty busy, and I totally get why. I highly recommend paying them a visit. They have a very thoughtful selection of matcha and tea. It was my first time trying sobacha and I enjoyed it - it tasted like barley tea but sweeter and smoother. Will definitely go back if I am in the area!
I had a wonderful experience taking an iced matcha class at Kettl on Monday! I signed up for the class before I got to NY and was able to work it into my busy schedule of being a cool aunt. My brother and I walked around the Greenpoint area and then he had to go pick up his kiddo from camp, so I explored the area then put Kettl into google maps thinking I was coming early for class to avoid the rain. I accidentally went to the wrong location and then it started pouring. The staff told me the other location was 10 minutes away by foot, so I hauled myself to it in pouring rain. Luckily I wore workout clothes and tennis shoes that day, but my raincoat was water resistant, not waterproof, so I got pretty soaked. I still arrived a few minutes early, and the staff let me take some napkins to dry myself off. The class was at the bar in the back of this flagship location. It was set up for two, but I was the only person who showed. Jayanna led me through a very detailed class, provided handouts and a soba tea cookie along with water, and answered a ton of questions I had. As a daily matcha maker, I knew I had a lot to learn. She showed me how to care for the different tools used to make matcha. We made three preparations: sparkling matcha, shaken matcha, and matcha latte. We went through each with various steps and measurements. She demonstrated what to do and then I would make the drinks for both of us. It was a very fun experience and I learned a lot. I also got to shop after the class with a 15% discount, so I got myself a custom single cultivar matcha called okuju made exclusively for Kettl and especially for lattes, and then some individually wrapped fancy tea bags of matcha genmai and hojicha for Eric when he travels. The class had an hour and a half of instruction and I spent a half hour asking about products and shopping. It is a very nice space and I would love to try some of the unique drinks on the menu plus take more classes. If you love matcha and learning, I recommend taking a class here or at the LA location if you are on the west coast!
Kettl is a bit overrated imo. I tried the shirakawa matcha latte, their highest grade for matcha lattes. I thought it was decent, but I feel like it could've been stronger. It also wasn't creamy enough for a latte. The shiso white peach matcha soda was a fun experimental drink, but I feel like for a matcha drink, the matcha flavor was definitely dominated by the shiso and white peach flavors. It was really refreshing though for a hot summer day. Super adorable store! I want to try the matcha tasting one day!
It is a very cozy-sized cafe but truly grateful for the quality matcha available here. I was able to enjoy all of our ordered matcha straight up given the high quality. You can also pick up a wide range of matchas from different regions and beautiful teaware as well. My only disappointment was the baked good - we got a slice of bread/cake and it was atrociously dry!! There were long lines while we were there but the staff managed the queues efficiently and the line moved fast. Worth it!
Super cute spot, very Instagrammable and aesthetic. Got the black tea and it was just a bit boring, placed into a fancy beaker. Would've been nice if they offered some sort of black tea based latte. If I remember correctly, the loaf was miso and pistachio. Couldn't taste much miso unfortunately. The seating is my main complaint. We came as a group of 3, people had already spread across the one shared table in the entire place. We tried sitting at the bar, but they told us we weren't allowed to move the chairs. So we ended up shuffling around the remaining table chairs, maybe breaking their rules again? Not sure why they were so uptight when there wasn't anyone at the bar and clearly not enough seating in the space, despite having enough room. Has potential but not sure I would return.
Went for a matcha tasting and was greeted warmly upon entering. I got the Uji-matcha tasting and my husband got to the tea selection. Our matcha expertise was very friendly and accommodating! I can't remember his name but maybe it was Oscar? He was very knowledgeable about the matcha sources and was even kind enough to show me how he whisks matcha. Each tasting was an experience; some had a special little treat to it! We also got the matcha cookie which was FANTASTIC. I hope to come back again to try their matcha latte making class. I won't spoil the tasting for you, you're just gonna have to find out yourself-- trust me, it's worth it
Holy matcha. I truly love an authentic matcha. No sugary fill. No dull color. Just bold, pure Japanese matcha. I had found Kettl on Instagram, so I was already a little suspicious whether or not this would be the real deal or just some influencers hype, but it was the real real deal and it was perfect. The line moved quickly and we got to choose from a variety of matcha options. I went with the top option and it was perfection! Beyond matcha lattes, they serve the tea itself or you can get a soft serve. They also had a little bar in the back for matcha tasting.
New favorite matcha place in the city! Flavor was great and there was a huge variety to pick from. The store also had great decor and explanations of the different regions that the matcha came from It also explained the different flavor profiles of each menu item Would definitely go back and next time am hoping to try the tasting experience!
Kettl is the best matcha shop in Brooklyn by far. When I walked in I was hit by the AC and tea scent and I would've paid just for that experience. I got the iced Uji matcha latte and it had a deep earthy flavor. I added honey which they had already melted a bit so that it was easy to stir in and not get clumpy (extra points for that)! I will make the trip out to Brooklyn just for their matcha.
This is a really cute tea shop nestled in Greenpoint. I've heard amazing things about the Matcha, and I wasn't super impressed unfortunately. To be fair, I tried the Hojicha but they are also well known to have great Hojicha. It was clumpy and grainy unfortunately. It wasn't obscenely overpriced though which is a plus here in NYC. One thing is that the girl that took my order was a bit rude. The other people working there were very nice, but she was visibly annoyed at having to take an order. I do want to go back and try the matcha since it is supposed to be amazing and maybe this was an off day, but this was unfortunately a bit of a miss.
Kettl certainly sets the standard, easily establishing itself as a top source for exceptional matcha quality. Tried the Hukuju from Yame, a blend I found to be quite bold and aromatic. Its profile offered a clear umami depth, reminiscent of fresh seaweed? I look forward to returning soon to compare their full range of matcha offerings in a tasting
I have gone to Kettl with a reservation in the past and I deeply enjoyed the experience. The drinks have a distinct grassy/vegetal flavor which help me feel in tune with nature. This is as fresh as matcha gets - and reminds me of some of the matcha/hojicha I got in Japan. The environment is what you would expect in a upscale tea/drink shop - peaceful, aromatic, clean, vibes of a relaxing Saturday morning, all day, every time it's open. The staff are also kind and have intimate knowledge of the drinks too. Will return :)
I had begun drinking quality matcha since 2023. When I found Kettl, I was in heaven. Love the Greenpoint location for tea tasting and being able to see the products before purchasing. Love their Shirakawa Legacy matcha latte w/house made almond or coconut milk. Everything is delish and love the vibe too. read more

Delicious matcha ! Very rich, earthy beautiful color and just top grade. You can taste how rich and flavorful the matcha is the quality is 100/10. Absolutely yummy such fast service too they have seating area and the inside is stunning. I just wanted to try the matcha because I love matcha and I heard this is one of the best matcha spots in nyc and yes the rumors are true! If you want quality matcha it's here ! They also have pastures from another great spot called "la cabra" my best friend loves that spot so I tried their chocolate croissant, was blown away !! Super light airy crisp tasty croissant the combo of these two together 10/10. read more
The tea is nothing much to give me a wow effect; very basic Japanese tea for a high price/ small cup. One star off for the unfriendly customer service. No smile at all. Love the decor inside and the warm cozy setup; you can also do online work or study here. read more

BEST. MATCHA. IN. NYC. HANDS DOWN. Okay I'm a sucker for matcha and if you read any review for where to get matcha in NYC, this is the one you're looking for. Kettl is such a precious spot where they offer some of the highest quality grade matcha and teas imported straight from Japan--Their classic matcha latte is made Hukuju matcha which is one of the creamiest and smoothest along with its beautiful vibrant pop of green color ;also goes super well with their baked goodies! The Brooklyn location is nice and spacious and they also have a tea tasting bar if you're ever in the mood for something different like the Gyokuro tea selection. P.S. if i see a cafe or restaurant collabing with Kettl its already a 10/10 in my book. read more

Love this place! Not only does the matcha taste authentic and true to its roots, but the staff consistently create a warm, welcoming atmosphere. That kind of genuine hospitality is rare these days. read more
Kettl is a cute Japanese tea house with a strong focus on matcha. You can tell just from the outside it's incredibly aesthetic. Immediately after looking at the menu I realized I am an amateur when it comes to matcha. The girl at the register was pretty helpful in explaining the different flavor profiles and I ended up going with the an iced Suiteki latte with coconut milk and my friend tried an iced Hukuju latte with coconut milk. She described the Suiteki to be more grassy and Hukuju to be more nutty and she was spot on. This was the most natural matcha I have ever tried and I didn't exactly know how to feel about it. However I could acknowledge that it's extremely high quality. If I had the opportunity to go back I would love to do a tasting or one of the classes--probably the introduction to Matcha--to get the full experience of Japanese tea! read more
There is no question that the matcha quality here is fantastic. I've come here twice now for their soft serve and for the tasting counter experience. If you are planning on stopping by here for a quick sweet or matcha, then your experience here will be solid and worth your buck. If you're coming here for the tasting, my experience was a bit different. We ended up not doing any of the tastings because it seemed pretty pricy for what they were offering (2-3 samples of matcha/tea priced at $30+) and decided to go a la carte instead. The hujuku matcha was a favorite of mine as a person who likes sweeter tasting matcha over umame. On first impressions though, I felt that the whole tasting experience is poorly explained on the website, especially for having to put down $5/pp to secure the seats (which they do credit back). I was fairly confused about what it entailed until I arrived for my appointment at which we were handed a menu and told that we wouldn't have to do a tasting at all. It seemed a bit underwhelming for the whole set up with the exclusive seats, reservations at $5/pp , and lack of explanation online. I was expecting an experience and was met with regular table service, something I felt I could've done without the extra cost and simply ordered at their counter service. I wouldn't mind doing a tasting here, but feel that the price doesn't match quite what you get. I was expecting an experience, more guidance from the staff, introductions to origin and history, dessert pairings with your tea/matcha. As someone with some experience with matcha, I was excited but a bit intimidated by the options and lack of explanations of what was being offered exactly. I would come back if I heard more about people's experiences with the tastings or for to-go counter service only. read more

Went to their Brooklyn location for a class, I arrived early. The place was super crowded, a mess of a line to order and no place to sit. A group of 5 ladies who clearly had finished their beverages long ago, were lingering and talking, oblivious to the line who wanted to sit. Place needs to limit sitting time to all, they can continue their talk elsewhere. Some others were just in their computers taking longer to sip their matcha. I had to wait 30 minutes until a chair got freed but then my class was about to start. Disorganized is the word for that place. I'm better off ordering from home as their products are great and high quality. read more
What a lovely spot for authentic, quality matcha drinks and sweets, as well as for purchasing a variety of matcha powders. The shop is small and cozy, with only one large shared table in the center for customers. However, I'd definitely recommend making a reservation or trying to snag a seat at the back bar area. You can watch the baristas make your drinks and desserts there, and it feels like a more private and intimate experience. For drinks, I loved my matcha latte - it had a strong matcha flavor that was also smooth and earthy, and the added oat milk gave it a hint of creaminess that balanced it all out. My friends also tried the hojicha and soba cha, both of which I also really enjoyed (the soba cha had a subtle nutty sweetness that my friends all ended up loving the most!). We added a hojicha parfait, and it was a delicious sweet treat to share alongside the drinks. Highly recommend this spot for any matcha or tea lover! read more

The weather on Saturday afternoon was pleasant, so I decided to grab a matcha latte and walk around Greenpoint. Kettl is a few minutes away from the G subway stop and another few minutes walk away from WNYC Transmitter Park which has a great view of the water and Manhattan skyline. The shop is nestled in the buildings and I knew I arrived at the correct place when I saw the cream white walls. As I walked in, I entered a world of cozy Japanese minimalist aesthetic. The room was filled with people sipping their drinks and chatting away. I ordered a hot matcha latte and I got the drink within a few minutes. I sat outside for a few minutes to sip my latte, but then walked to the park to soak in the views. The matcha latte was a little lukewarm, but the quality of the matcha was solid. As I walked around Greenpoint, I was surprised to see that Kettl was also sold at Dashi Okume. read more

I came for the sundae, but they didn't have it when I went. I settled for a hojicha latte and matcha ganache tart, and both were so good. The hojicha latte was made so well. It was a perfect amount of milk to tea, and the amount of milk foam on top was delicious. It wasn't too gritty either. Because it wasn't sweet, it paired nicely with the ganache tart. The chocolate in the tart was so smooth, and the matcha shown through. There was matcha powder dusted over the top, but it didn't need to be there because the matcha flavor was so evident in the dessert. The matcha powder was a bonus. The cream provided a softer texture to the tart, and it was also amazing. It was creamy, and it just melted. Williamsburg is such a trek for me, but I would come back for the drinks and the desserts. read more

If I lived in Greenpoint Id be coming here everyday. Im a big sucker for authentic matcha, and really hate when you can taste artificial matcha flavors. Everything about this place is extremely relaxing. They have even a bar area where you can see your matcha get made, with some matcha sundaes as well. Highly recommend their matcha sundaes/soft serve, best I've ever had, they even include some soba bits on top giving the ice cream a really great crunch read more

We stopped by here on a friend's recommendation, and were not disappointed at all. When you step in, you immediately understand that this is a true matcha spot. Their menu has varying tiers of matcha that you can have, and it's quite a condensed menu focusing on matcha itself, without many fancy mixed drinks. There's not too much seating inside, but it's laid out quite beautifully. We got a matcha and a soba latte. Both were unsweetened (and I'm not sure you can get them sweetened), which I was pleasantly surprised by! The matcha latte was super rich and creamy, with a strong strong matcha flavor. Not hidden behind any sweeteners or other flavors. The soba latte was super interesting and my first time trying it. The flavor was quite light and was honestly masked a bit by the milk, so next time, definitely want to try it straight up. Will 100% be back to try the teas in varying forms (seems like the matcha cortado is also quite favored)! read more

And one of a few best matcha in New York goes to *drum roll*!!!!!!!! KETTL!!!!! After drinking too many watery matcha, I have ffinally find one that taste like there are some decent tea in it. The color is great, the bitterness was right on point, the grassy, greenny taste are there. I'm IN LOVE! There're a few seat inside but not a lot so do prepare to sit outside if necessary. Highly recommend for some good matcha! read more
Super cute place ! Rated as one of the best matcha places. I decided on doing the extra trek to this location bc this is an actual indoor store with a bathroom, tea making classes, and also a machine where you can see how they freshly house mill the matcha for their powder. The aesthetic was super cute and staff was friendly. They only had 1 size for everything - a small. Prices were about average for a matcha here. Quality was good and not bitter. Would come back to try one of their matcha desserts or would love to try the matcha class on how to properly make/prepare the matcha. Had indoor and also outdoor seating.. read more

Highly recommend their matcha mousse. You can taste the green tea in it which I like. It feels authentic to the ones I had in Japan. The Hojicha mousse was so so and bland, it lacked the hojicha flavor. We also ordered hot genmaicha tea and it was not that flavorful. Would try their matcha tea or latte next time in their manhattan location. They have other desserts (mousse cake, parfait, etc) but you have to go inside the shop to dine in which I wished they also offered as a take out option too. read more

This is a really cute and authentic spot for matcha. You can opt for a Japanese tea session/class with them (starting at $40) if you would like to learn more about Japanese tea. This place is so authentic and true that their matcha latte is unsweetened (not to be a prick but I prefer my matcha latte SLIGHTLY sweetened, enough to bring out the tea flavor but not too sweet that you can taste the sugar). I still enjoyed my drinks though. The miso pistachio cake was really dense and moist - interesting flavor too. read more

Tried their hojicha latte and that was probably the best hojicha latte that I have ever tried! The tea quality was very high and I like how they have a few vegan milk options, including a homemade coconut milk. Even though I wanted to try the coconut milk, I picked oat milk since the coconut flavor from coconut milk might overshadow the tea itself. I don't think the drink was sweetened but there was some natural sweetness coming from the oat milk, which complemented the tea very well. Didn't try any of their cookies or desserts but definitely would love to come back and try them in the future! read more
I found myself in Greenpoint the other day and really needed something cold and sweet to refresh myself on a hot summer day and stumbled upon this little cafe spot. Decor was very cute and minimal, and I feel like they would be pretty popular if they had more seating available or a backyard patio. I wouldn't recommend the cake so much, but it was okay. It just had the slightest hint of hojicha and wasn't too sweet. Perfect for those who don't like desserts that are overly sweet. I also got the matcha latte and hojicha latte. Matcha latte definitely needs a bit of sugar, but hojicha was fine without it. Would recommend for a pitstop during a long, hot summer day. They also sell loose tea leaves, tea bags, and cute ceramic teacups. In addition to the desserts, they also have chocolate matcha bars available. Yea read more

Tried the iced matcha and it was pretty good but as it is iced the matcha flavor was subdued. The miso cake was fine but nothing I would get again. They do sell some very high quality hojicha bags that you can steep at home ! It is very good and hard to find high quality Japanese tea like this. If I return I would skip baked goods and just get hot matcha or tea. read more

I will never not recommend Kettl. I've been to the Manhattan location, but the Greenpoint location is so much cozier. They also have a larger menu, so making the trek is worth it. I've come here a lot for matcha and houjicha. The staff is always extremely friendly and helpful. This time, I wanted to highlight the tea tasting. What an experience!! You can choose from a long list of teas to try from and I highly recommend making a reservation at the bar for a tea tasting. The bar tender explains the process, properties, and tastes of the different types of tea. They also steep their teas in a specially made water that enhances the tea flavor. If you're looking for an experience to completely blow your mind, I recommend trying one of the Gyokuro teas. You'll be in for a treat! read more
Heard great things about Kettl from their other location, so I was intrigued by their matcha. But we mainly came for the parfait though. The place was simplistic, with a big communal table in the middle and bar seating at the back. Make sure you're dining in if you're ordering the parfait. Of course, I had to try the Matcha Latte ($6) with Oat Milk. The drink was tiny and gives me further reason to believe why ordering coffee outside is a scam. They did not even fill it to the brim. I didn't notice anything particular about the matcha flavor, but I didn't find it bitter like my friends did, which was great. The creaminess of the oat definitely upped the taste. The Kettl Parfait ($15) was expensive for the portion size, yet again. But I still enjoyed it! It was pretty sweet, but the rich matcha ice cream helped mask the abundant cream, hard sugar cube, cookies, and whatever else was in this. The mochi tasted so fresh! To make up for the long wait on the parfait, the workers were so kind to gift us a cookie. The Hojicha Butter Cookie ($5) was so fun! I could definitely taste the roasted taste, but it was subtle and blended with the butter. And for curious reasons, we of course had to try their Soba Crunch Cookie ($5)! Part of me was hoping for a pleasant surprise, but eh, it tasted exactly like the name suggests: crunchy! Not sure what soba tastes like, but the butter taste was still strongly evident in this cookie as well. Although very very expensive, I enjoyed sampling a lot of their menu options. Kettl made me consider matcha as my caffeine intake now as it sure kept me up late that night! read more
Greens tea cafe. If you are looking for authentic Japanese green tea experience, stop by one of their stores in NyC. I stopped by the location in Greenpoint. Entering, space is bright, clean and minimalistic. Walls of variety of Japanese green tea from various regions of Japan, to purchase. You can order tea for stay experience or Togo. Try also have variety of matcha desserts on menu. Definitely a must stop for some zen moments. read more

A cool place to relax for those curious to try matcha or matcha/tea enthusiasts It was surprisingly louder than expected like a typical coffee shop ambience which suits me and my friends who liked to talk freely at varying volumes. We came here for the parfait but ended up ordering additional items to test. First came the matcha latte, which I personally found has a strong matcha bitter taste then its watered down at the end? I didn't enjoy it much but good for the friend who enjoyed it all and insisted the oat milk gave creaminess to the drink. They forgot to make our parfait so we got a free hojicha cookie for waiting. It was sweet and had the roasted tea flavor which is what hojicha is. The matcha latte complimented the cookie very well. The soba cookie was not as good is all I can say; it's almost like a sugar cookie. I ordered the Miyabi sencha to try and I'm not well-versed in tea but the intense aroma and clear finish was there. The parfait overall was alright. I think it would be better off just getting the matcha soft serve because all the additional toppings of cookies, mochi, jellies and whip cream was to sweeten the bitterness of the matcha ice cream. There is a restroom at the back of the store. Not much seating inside but there is outdoor seating too. Consuming all this in the evening was way too much caffeine so we had a sleepless night :') interesting exp tho read more
