Driving around Austin we saw a ton of signs offering kolaches. We had no idea what they were until someone explained what this quintessential Texas food is. A friend recommended that we try Kerlaches as it merges the idea of a tart with savory ingredients such as barbecue meat. We HAD to go before we left the city, and it was certainly worth the trip. We tried the pulled pork and brisket with cheddar cheese. Both were absolutely delicious, but the brisket was unbelievably tender and on point. This place is 100% worth checking out! We have been going to Kerlin since they opened and when we lived in Austin, were always among the first in line on the weekend days they had kolaches (which often sold out fast). We were stoked to see that they were opening a trailer dedicated to the kolaches so we could have them any day of the week and not have to work to get them lol. As a lifelong Texan, these are the best kolaches I've had (okay, klobasneks, but that doesn't roll off the tongue, does it?). The quality is still just as good as when they were making fewer of them. I have no idea how she does it! The Kerlin folks are lovely people and they make incredible kolaches. Go eat em! read more

Best Kolache I have ever had!!! If they just sold the dough I would eat it happily. I have tried all the flavors and my favorites are the brisket and the spinach. They are really big and full, one person could be content with one, but if you're really hungry, get two. I am also obsessed with the staff here. I have met the owner a couple of times and cannot say enough about her kindness! It is great to support a local Austin business with some incredible food!! I came for the Brooklyn food truck next to this place but the kolache truck caught my attention. I shared a brisket kolache with my boyfriend and we both thought it was amazing. I first had a Kerlin's kolache on a food tour 5 years ago. I have dreamt of them ever since then. Everytime I came back to Austin, they were closed (summer vacation, covid, etc.). Last weekend, my dreams came true. The first bite was just as good as I remembered. The perfect dough, brisket and cheese in each bite. Glorious! I could have eaten a dozen of them. This is the pinnacle of what every small business should be. The owners and employees are so kind, the food is fantastic, and they always ALWAYS pass the vibe check. I fell in love with Kerlin's years ago. They have the best BBQ in the state - not sure why Texas Monthly keeps slipping on keeping them out of the top 10. Moist brisket, make your eyes roll to the back of your head pork belly, DELICIOUS sides (a rarity in Texas BBQ - shoutout to the dill potato salad and best banana pudding in the city). Now, imagine those delicious smoked bbq meats INSIDE of sweet dough with cheese and chiles. They are divine. They were deserving of their own separate food truck. And one day their own brick and mortar. Note - the tres leche cinnamon rolls (weekend special) are worth getting up and standing in line a few minutes before they open. I was next in line right before they sold out today, but as I stepped out of line, happily willing to try again next week, the owner called me over and said, "Weren't you here yesterday?" Indeed I was! I was too late on Saturday, and was in line to try again on Sunday. She had a little end piece bite that she gave to me for free. Truly made my day. While we were at the Live Oak Brewery Anniversary party, I saw the Kerlaches tent and knew I needed to try them before we left... even though we'd already eaten food from the other trucks. My husband said the brisket and cheddar kolache was the best thing he ate all day. He knows his brisket and this was well-filled with top-quality beef. I had mine the next day (realize this is not optimal), reheated and even with a day-old pastry the quality was there. The bread was just-right sweetness of kolache dough, but not too poofy like fruit-filled open kolaches. My czech heritage knows this is technically closer to a klobasnek, but who cares what they're called when they're this good. read more
