the beef with oyster sauce is absolutely horrible..it shouldn't have carrots and bell peppers in it for one, and the name suggests that you will taste oyster sauce...and you do not!!!! I told myself I wouldn't order from here again but thought I would give it another try..bad mistake and a waste of good money. If you want good Chinese food, then don't make the same mistake I did...don't order from here. Don't get me wrong, some stuff is alright, but the things that should be good because they were for decades, are no longer good. Some of the best Chinese food in recent memory - and in Winnipeg of all places (I'm from Vancouver)! Dishes were served quick, hot, and tasty! The "super snow" was a surprise hit (because we didn't know what to expect), and the sweet and sour pork was somehow elevated. And they graciously accommodated a big party of 30+ loud, hungry filipinos. If ever I'm back in Winnipeg, I'm definitely hitting up Ken's Restaurant again - and you should too! read more

Hadn't eaten there in years.Had the hot/ sour soup, spicy beef/ chicken satay, was definitely not real spicy, just enough and the pineapple sweet and sour chicken.Cant wait till l order again and try something else.My meal was one the tastiest Chineese meals l have ever had, very impressed.Highly recommend! read more

Ken's Restaurant is on Ellice Avenue, behind the Air Canada Building, which was where I used to work. My review isn't for the food. It's funny, but I rarely did Chinese food when I lived in Winnipeg. I made my own on the whole, until I branched out years later and found a Chinese restaurant that became my regular. I used to do rotating shifts. Ken's is open late into the wee hours of the morning (3 or 4 am). When working a midnight shift, I knew a couple of colleagues who would walk across the street to grab a bite to each on their "lunch" break. I never did that. Instead, I brought meals from home into work. I'm actually here to talk about beer. After a dayshift, my entire team came to Ken's to drink. It was a nice team-bonding experience. Back then, I had two Rolling Rock beers. They came in bottles. I was a late-bloomer to beer, so I was still trying to figure out what I liked. I didn't mind Rolling Rock. Both beers were icy cold and hit the spot. My manager looked at me after having consumed my first beer and remarked that my face wasn't red. I don't get flushed after drinking any alcohol. He pointed out that another colleague of ours who was Chinese did. Nope, I can handle alcohol - perhaps too well! It's a bar-restaurant setup. The food is mainly Cantonese-style with a westernized twist. I cringe seeing fries, and sweet and sour chicken balls (ick... what the heck is that?!) on the menu. They are there if you are craving them. When I was there years ago, there were Video Lottery Terminal (VLT) machines on the bar counter. I'm not sure if they are still there. +.5 for service Ken's Restaurant is a down-to-earth Chinese restaurant that seems very subdued. It opens until very late, so if you're looking for a food place after going to the clubs, this place likely fits the bill. I came here for dinner on a Sunday night with friends, and it was relatively quiet around 8pm. Nonetheless I had friends who went here before and insisted the food is quality (and the owners are authentic Chinese). We had the crispy chicken with special sauce, deep fried squid with five spice salt, fried beef noodles with mixed vegetables, and Fujian fried rice. I definitely liked the squid and the fried rice, and would certainly order those two again. The beef noodles were okay, decent enough for typical Winnipeg Chinese food quality. The crispy chicken was lacklustre and something I wouldn't order again (although it seems Winnipeg's BBQ chicken quality overall is quite disappointing). Service was excellent for an Asian establishment. Do expect to wave down waiters if you're looking for service. Will I return? Well it's not my first choice, but if I'm in the area I wouldn't say no to dining here. read more

So when you're open till 3 or 4 am you know you'll attract a certain crowed. Well that was me 15 or so years ago. When I was much younger, drank a lot of alcohol, and this place was a go to after the bar for some Chines food. My sister and I visiting the city and she was craving their deep fried calamari. Fast forward to today... wow they somewhat renovated new paint!?! Purple walls or maybe I just didn't notice it before. Menu looks new and hard cover, (side note I haven't been to Kens in many years so all these things might not actually be new but still new to me) the food in the menu looks and sound the same. We came at about 1am to my surprise their were 3 other tables there. The food was ok, we ordered deep fried calamari was supers salty, chow fan, gailan, with beef was ok, spicy ginger beef was extremely salty. I guess if you're drunk and hungry this is the place, it has changed look wise and taste of food or maybe I needed to be drunk to enjoy it. Prices are decent and hours open most nights till 4am!!! Needless to say it was still fun to be eating at this place at 1am, brought back some good memories. read more

I was visiting Winnipeg for an overnight business trip, staying in the Radisson, and headed out looking for East Ocean restaurant but stumbled into this place instead. Not much on atmosphere but I have to say that they served some of the best Chinese food I have ever had -- and I've been to a lot of Chinese restaurants. They had a garlic broccoli dish that was cooked perfectly and had enormous flavor. We also ordered a pork and flat noodle dish that was outstanding, and another spicy shredded pork dish that was also out of this world. The dumplings were a little different than I am used to, very dense but also very tasty and I really enjoyed them. The only dish that was a little disappointing was the duck - not as good as I've had elsewhere, just OK. I don't think duck is their specialty. The menu was extensive, portions were huge (especially for the price) and the waitress was very friendly and had a great sense of humor. The place got a few more customers after the Jets game ended, but otherwise not many people there. If I ever get back to Winnipeg I am going there again! read more

Super disappointed. My family is from out of town so I asked my friend who is a Winnipeg native where to get Chinese delivery, and this is where she suggested. I don't even understand what it's supposed to be, but it does not taste or look like any Chinese food I have ever had. It's almost like someone cooked a frozen steamer bag and delivered it. No flavor and no seasoning whatsoever. Even after adding soy sauce and fried wontons, I couldn't eat it. Now I'm hungry AND pissed off. Don't waste your money. read more

This is NOT, I repeat, NOT a good place to get Chinese food. If you're looking for a good meal, Chinese food cooked with care and caution, this is NOT the place to go. Myself and my boyfriend ordered chicken fried rice, chop suey (deluxe) and the meat was just horrible. The meat did not feel like how meat should when bitten down on. It was soggy, slimey, and there was a lot of fat still on the pieces of meat. (Beef and chicken) Whenever I tried eating it, it disgusted me and made my tummy turn. For the chop suey it was watery and had no flavour, it also split inside the plastic bag onto our other takeout containers. -there was also a skinny, hard, brown 4-6 cm thing my boyfriend bit down on. It looked like maybe it was an uncooked noodle. Visually It looked like a cherry stem but felt like a hard noodle. We also order deep fried shrimp and dry breaded pork. We didn't get much shrimp to begin with 10-12 pieces for what?! $14? that's around $1.35 per shrimp, the deep fried pork also tasted like it was mixed in and added and cooked in the same old oil. I have an allergy to seafood, so I don't recommend getting deep fried things because I tasted the taste of seafood on the pork & my lips got itchy. They were not good pieces of meat either. Lots of deep fried fat. They also forgot our sauces we paid EXTRA for and they said they couldn't help us with our problem. And to add on, the woman over the phone argued back with us and told us recount our shrimp. Lol as stupid and irrelevant as it sounds - this is poor customer service. I'm sure if you were drunk and wanted some food and this restaurant was open, it would taste half decent for the amount you're paying. - mind you me and my boyfriend aren't newcomers to this restaurant, we've been good customers only to be treated poorly. We've eaten inside and gotten takeout, both are the same. We prefer take out because the atmosphere is dead inside and their I guess you can say "decor" is plain and old looking- definitely needs a makeover. This place had the gall to charge us $33 for two sesame chicken "meals," if you can call it that. It was a g-d atrocity. Listen, I didn't expect a Michelin-rated dining experience. I had a couple of drinks with my friend, and you know how it goes. Nothing tastes better than Chinese delivery when you're drunk. But this. This "food" tasted so disgusting that it immediately sobered me up, and I would have eaten 3-day old fries. There was no sauce in the chicken, first of all. There was sugar water. Literal sugar water. In the chicken. Too many of the pieces of chicken were simply breaded and deep fried fat. I bit into just chunks of fat. Drowning in what was either watered down maple syrup or just sugar water. Brown sugar water. It's been 15 minutes since I ate what I could. My buzz is gone and my bowels are groaning. Had the shark fin soup and it was great. Start with the small bowl as it is plenty for two people. Try the squid and onions for something special. Probably the best calamari I've eaten. The wonton were crispy and excellent. The staff was friendly and service was excellent. Not much for decor but who cares. Food and service great! read more

I went there at 2 am! When i got into the restuarant, i was standing like around 2 mins and no one came to ask `May i help u ` I saw the 2 waitress were talking so happily ... When the chief came out and said to the 2 waitress u had a customer three times, then one just came to me very slowly... I was ordering take out and when i opened my food, there were no spoon, no fork and no napkins. The service is totally poor! I will never go there again!!! read more
