Dr Bernstein is a godsend. I had a TERRIBLE experience in LA with placement of two veneers. It…read moreresulted in gum disease, discomfort, and poor aesthetics. It all came to a head when I was 8 months pregnant and one of them chipped. This time around I did my research and went with the best of the best for cosmetics. From the first time I met with Dr. Bernstein, I knew I was in the right place. There was no stress or anxiety -- I knew what was happening every step of the way. He immediately identified the error that resulted in the gum disease and referred me out for gum surgery before veneer replacement. Everything went great, I often get compliments on my teeth, and people are shocked when I tell them they are veneers because they look so natural. This was over 10 years ago. On Monday of this week, I suddenly had a small tooth chip from behind one of my veneers when I was eating. I was terrified that I was going to have to replace them and it unearthed the anxiety from the first time in LA. But no need to fear, Dr. Bernstein got me in straightaway to take a look. I assumed he would do an assessment and have me come back to get it fixed. Not so. He told me it would just take a little bonding, and proceeded to do it right then and there, free of charge. We had a great chat and caught up, then I was on my way. Again, the original placement was over 10 years ago and yet saw me no issue and with my charge! The office staff is all incredible, the space is gorgeous, the skill is expert, and the customer service is phenomenal. Could not recommend more -- and this coming from someone who went through a mediocre dentist the first time around. Don't hesitate to work with Dr. Bernstein and his team!!

They are also very competent, kind and pleasant, which is super important when you are already vulnerable and afraid this visit will hurt you or cause you financial ruin.

Today, upon arrival for a noon appointment, I was told they no longer accepted my insurance. Not good. Last visit, while having my teeth cleaned, the hygienist banged (BANGED) into my head EVERY time she swiveled her chair to jot down the sounding measurements of my gums (usually there is an assistant there to do this while the hygenist calls out the numbers). She had no clue even though I KEPT SITTING LOWER and LOWER in my chair to avoid the inevitable and highly inconsiderate head bumping. SIX TIMES she banged my head. Not good. Then they informed me I'd need "deep cleaning" = 2 $600 sessions because my gums were in trouble. Not good. Today i waited 45 minutes for a cavity to be filled. I left at 45 minutes as I did not want to get a parking ticket (meter was 1hr) and thought 45 minutes was enough. ONLY ONE PERSON THERE APOLOGISED. DO NOT GO HERE. They're clearly going downhill fast.

Just know that you pay upfront and get reimbursed only if you have a PPO plan. Parking can be difficult, but they share parking w/ Safeway upstairs and have 3 spots for their business. Luckily, I don't have that many problems so I've only been in the additional treatment chair a handful of times. The office is in an old house on the corner of a residential area of Rockridge. It is an easy flat walk from Rockridge Bart or there is free residential street parking. For me I can walk over in five minutes which is the main reason I keep coming back! Since the pandemic, you have to ring the doorbell and wait for somebody to unlock the door for you. You then wait in the lobby until the hygienist is ready for you. There used to be a Wi-Fi password posted up but I didn't see it this time. Ask if you need it! They used to have Delta dental as their covered insurance but now it is out of network, but we keep coming back for the convenience. Unfortunately, my husband has had some trouble this past year as they postponed him twice for having no hygienist and the third time it was an hour delay before he finally got his cleaning. I have not experienced this yet, and hopefully it was just an isolated incident! The office is small and clean. You get your cleaning in one area where there is a skylight and a TV if you wish to wear their headphones and watch it. There is light pop music going on in the background, but you can also take your own earphones. If you're going for a general cleaning, it usually takes about one hour. There is the checking of the teeth, scraping, brushing, flossing, and then the dentist comes over, or you move over to another chair to do a final check. They offer you different flavors of toothpaste for the brushing part. You will lie in the dentist chair and they will give you protective eyewear, and a bib while they do their work. Everything is sterilized and professional. It's a little harder when you get a chatty hygienist as they have their hand in your mouth when you want to reply. Every few years, you need to take x-rays, which is in a small corner on its own, and you wear a heavy vest to protect from the radiation. There is a single unisex bathroom. You pay and make your next appointment at the front counter. They will give you a business card with the date for a reminder if you need it, but I always refuse it as I put it in my Google calendar. Plus, they always confirm and remind you before the appointment. I have it on my account for them to Text or email instead of calling. Calling is outdated. Now they have lip balm giveaways on the front counter, which is great because it's my favorite type of useful swag. They also give you a little pouch with toothbrush, floss, travel, toothpaste, and mouthwash after each cleaning. The staff who is working on you wear masks and gloves and face shields so they are well protected. When I first used to go, I did see the previous Dentist, Dr. Berg one or two times but since then it has only been Dr. Koida. I did have the substitute Dentist one time and she was not as good. My husband complained about her as he had her last time and she was looking stuff up in her dentist book and kept him waiting forever. Dr. Koida usually does not recommend unnecessary treatments, so there's no pressure to go beyond the general cleaning if it's not necessary. In the beginning, they also used to offer Wine to help calm you down. I don't know if they do this anymore as they don't offer me any drinks, since I never accepted.
