I honestly believe Dr. Sweeney to be the most thorough, knowledgeable, honest, and compassionate optometrist or ophthalmologist I've ever met. I know that should I need eye surgery, Dr. Sweeney's recommendation for an ophthalmologist will have been researched thoroughly. Highly recommend Dr. Sweeny (although Dr. Gong retired - a shout out to her as well). My entire family has been going to this practice for a couple of decades. Dr. Sweeny is great at knowing not just your eyes but who you are as well. He always spends time explaining about my eyes and the changes that come with being "a certain age". I have mixed feelings about this office. The doctors and front office staff are very professional, competent, and friendly. I stay because of them. However not impressed with the optical department. Their selection is old and stale, same brands, and same frames since I became a patient 5+ years ago. They really need to mix it up and bring in some modern mid-price options. The male optician is also a little off...."awkwardly nice" but not friendly and does not appear to enjoy his job. Prices are normal doctor markups. You can get them cheaper online but not worth the hassle. The actual facilities are a dump. Building is very old and it has a dank moldy smell as you enter the main entrance. Interior is dated. They're a very busy practice. Facilities are long overdue for an upgrade with an expanded and updated optical section. read more

I was referred to Dr. Sweeney by a friend, and have been going to him for 2 years now. He's great and takes time with you. He's very thorough with the exam and answers your questions clearly. He makes suggestions and provides good explanation for his suggestions. The office staff are great but sometimes I feel a rudeness in the staff that does the scheduling when talking to her. Otherwise, the staff are very nice. I want to give Dr. Sweeney 5-stars but his availability is limited. He's so busy that it's hard to schedule your appointment. This makes me want to find another doctor who has more availability, but then I think about how great Dr. Sweeney is that I am hesitant to switch. Update: 9/30/13 I received my reminder card last week and called in today to schedule an appointment. Given almost 2 months in advance, I still had a hard time scheduling an appt with Dr. Sweeney. Although he is open until 7pm on Wednesday, there never seems to be availability on that day even with advance scheduling. He's just too busy! I hate to take time off from work as my time off are limited and I must save that for my lil' one. I hate to consider another optometrist b/c Dr. Sweeney is by far the best optometrist I've had. *sighs* read more

Dr. Sweeney is the best ever. It's no wonder you can't get a same day appointment. The secret is out and so glad we found him. I had a great Optomatrist until he couldn't practice anymore, forcing us to switch. Dr. Sweeney is so much better than our previous Optomatrist that he's in a league of his own. My daughter has excellent vision but we take her in regularly for exams just for good measure. Even though we told him she doesn't wear glasses, he patiently and thoroughly gave her a full exam. And he discovered that she has developed some thickening of her inner eye lids from previous seasonal allergies. He recommended some OTC eye drops to prevent further damage. His entire staff is kind, friendly, and caring. So pleased that we found him. read more

I went to Dr. Sweeny for an eye check on some strange happenings in my eye. After his exam, I felt very reassured that this is a normal occurence for people of a certain age. He did a great job answering questions and educatinbg me. I will go for a recheck in a month. I have been a patient of Dr. Gong, at this practice for 20 years and this was my first visit with Dr. Sweeny. I highly recommend Dr. Sweeny, Dr. Gong and their very helpful and friendly staff! Top Doc! He will get your Rx correct. He looked at a pair of glasses I had made at Costco (using his Rx) and he could tell they didn't make them correctly (with his own eyes - not a machine). He then put them on a machine and confirmed they were not correct. Costco said they would redo them. He also caught an growth in my father-in-laws eye which no one knew he had. He is a little pricey but your eyesight isn't something to cheap out on unless its not important. ;-) read more

Dr. Sweeney is by far my favorite doctor. I have been seeing him (no pun intended) for over three years and am always impressed. As other reviewers have noted, he takes the time to get to know you and explains everything thoroughly. The staff at the front desk is also extremely warm and welcoming. They know you by name and do everything they can to help you. On one occasion, I had a billing issue with my insurance. The front desk staff was willing to resubmit the paperwork to my insurance company in order for them to correctly bill it. Highly recommended! read more

In this day and age of too many patients and not enough time in the day, Dr. Sweeney sets himself apart from everyone else. He spends time with you, gets to know you and is extremely thorough. Dr. Sweeney is fantastic. I was referred by my last eye doctor when I was moving away from southern California. I am still thankful for this recommendation 6 years later. He is a smart, gentle, and thorough doctor who listens and cares (which is so hard to find these days!). My review is based off of my first visit to Dr. Sweeney. I work during the day so it is always hard to set appointments to minimize time to take off from work. He is very popular and hard to get an appointment with, but since I have no vision problems and this was a routine exam, i didn't mind the wait. Plus, on wednesday the office hours are extended to accomodate later appointments which is a big plus for working folks! I am very impressed with Dr. Sweeney. He gave me a very thorough eye exam, more than I have gotten in the past from other OD's. He is patient and answers all questions. I did not feel rushed at all. Dr Sweeney and his staff are outstanding! My husband and I have been going to him for four years - and we drive 45 minutes each way to see him. High marks for the sweeney and the gong. I have gone to them for the past couple of years and the whole office is great. The receptionist are very professional and keep things moving for you. The technicians are very good at the preliminary exams. I have seen both doctors and both run a very nice professional business. They run all of the necessary tests to give you the best glasses possible. The eye glass technician was very good at helping to pick out the right frames, and glasses. Ken Sweeney is a FABULOUS optometrist who really knows what goes on with good vision. I had been going to him for over 40 years before we moved to Oakland and he guided me through contact lenses that really worked, monovision lenses and contacts when that '40ish' reading thing showed up, monitored the growth of my cataracts and recommended me to a star opthamologist at Kaiser when they were ripe, then gave me a great post-cataract prescription. After we moved to Oakland, he recommended the School of Optometry and another local optometrist and things were okay for awhile. Unfortunately, my vision deteriorated and nobody really seemed to care - the latest prescriptions didn't work but nothing got better. I finally went back to Ken this June after my eyes got really crazy during our two month trip and he did a very thorough eye exam and discovered that in the last couple of years I had developed a secondary cataract that NONE of the others had found. With his help, I went back to KP to another opthamologist who was most impressed with Ken's diagnosis and took care of YAGing the cataract. After the month of post-operative settling, Ken gave me a prescription for mono-vision that works. He took the time to make sure that mono-vision glasses would work with the computer, with distance, with my iPhone, with reading, and with general needs. I can't thank him enough, except by giving him this great review!!!! read more

Dr. Sweeney has been my eye doctor for the last two years and I think he is great. He takes his time and explains everything thoroughly. My problem is with the office staff. I have been experiencing vision problems and headaches and was told by my regular doctor to have my eyes checked immediately. I called in October and the soonest they could get me in was January. The office staff did not seem too concerned. No trying to accommodate or work me in. So, I called another eye doctor in Los Gatos and was seen within the week. read more
