I've always found it difficult to find a good optometrist, as I feel most places constantly try to get you to add on tests by scaring you about your visual health. However, after my appointment with Dr. Ruiz, I can no longer say that! Dr. Ruiz was extremely personable, helpful, and just very kind overall. He really took his time addressing all my questions and concerns, and I didn't feel that he was trying to squeeze some extra money out of me. It was actual quite the opposite, as he even reminded me to get my rebate! Apart from Dr. Ruiz, the rest of the staff I had the opportunity to interact with were super kind as well. This was my second time going to this particular, Eye, Dr, and the gentleman I spoke with was very helpful since I technically made the wrong type of eye doctor appointment. Lol apparently I need to see a medical eye doctor in order for them to check out my eyes before I start a new prescription medication. This particular doctor was really nice and Did the examination for me anyways granted I'll have to make another appointment with my PCP and then see another eye doctor. Well, at the appointment I could pay extra, I think it was 40 or $60? Yet I decided to do the picture of the backside of my eye to see if I would potentially have anything wrong. I decided to do that just because I haven't been to an eye doctor in about five years. Turns out the picture showed that I will need reading glasses in the next 10 to 15 years! So cool!! I didn't know cameras could project that! Science is amazing! I forget the eye doctors name. But I know they told me he was the Chinese doctor. I'm not too sure if he is actually Chinese or just speaks Mandarin and or Cantonese, but certain people requested him. This place no longer takes arguably the largest insurance network of VSP?!? What is worse is they don't tell you and just say that your insurance only covers less than half of the benefits. But that is only because they don't take VSP! I had NO idea about this and they also sneakily don't tell you. I had to dig really hard asking why my coverage was so low until finally the optician said VSP is not taken. Just be straight and don't rob your patients of their benefits !!! read more

Dr. Yu is very kind and helpful. My prescription requires a prism and that is sometimes difficult to get right on the first try. Unfortunately she only works Saturdays, so it is not always the most convenient, but she definitely listens to any concerns you may have. read more

My previous optometrist moved so I had to find a new one close by our house (thank you Yelp). They took my info over the phone so nothing was required at the appointment. The building looks a little sketchy from the outside, but once inside it is a bright and clean office. I arrived a couple minutes late, and was almost immediately taken back. My preliminary exams took less than 10 minutes and within 15 minutes of my arrival I met with Dr. Chang. He is awesome, super easy to talk to, and explained something I had asked several optometrists previously in a way that actually made sense. At checkout their front desk staff was amazing: they gave me my prescription and never put any pressure on me to look at glasses before they gave it to me. I was out the door in 38 minutes, unquestionably a record for a doctor visit of any kind. I have found my new optometrist! read more

I am surprised how highly rated this place is on Yelp. First the good: Dr. Lum was so personable and an excellent communicator. The eye tech was efficient as well. Now for the opportunities: I found this place to be a bit disorganized. I booked an appointment online and even had a follow-up call for insurance info but when I arrived, it was as if I was starting the whole process all over again. The bigger thing to me is that the establishment is quite dated--dingy carpet, dirty walls, and just worn out and tired overall. Furthermore, the building is not particularly friendly toward seniors and those with disabilities. The parking structure is under the building but has no elevator. Instead you need to take a ramp on the side of the building and wind around to the back and then to the front again. Overall the place really could use a modernization or facelift. And I'm surprised that they still use paper records. read more

The founding doctors have retired, the practice was sold and changed names. The experience when I last went was less than awesome and I have stopped going there. Prices are high, delivery of glasses was slow, and they seemed to be quite intent on upselling every customer. Some of the reception desk staff were brusque and humorless (not all). And as I already noted, the founding excellent optometrists have retired or moved away. In short, the excellent optical care I was receiving was no longer present, which left the bad taste of them not accepting VSP plans for quite a while, and expensive, slow delivery. I've found a better run, friendly INEXPENSIVE place to get great care and glasses in Los Gatos. Indeed, I got two pair of prescription glasses and an eye exam for less than it cost me to get a single pair of glasses... and that is WITHOUT charging my VSP! read more

Not the same. Front desk and people answering phones are just not personal, friendly nor are they efficient. They are also rude and inflexible. The front desk would NOT make an appointment over the phone without my insurance. Yet they had both my health and eye insurance on file since I have been coming here for 3 decades.I had not changed insurance in over 5 years It's ok, but the entire organization appears to me they have allotted no more than 10 min max with each patient and there is this feeling of being rushed through THEIR process. And then they encourage eyeglass purchase and try to suck you on maximum contact buy "for a deal" it's not really a great deal unless your eyes don't change. Ever. Meanwhile, the eyeglass selection is very subpar from where it use to be. Unless you don't care about nice glasses, take the glasses prescription and go elsewhere. read more

My whole family has been going to this eye center for few years now and have seen most of the doctors. All the doctors are very knowledgeable and nice and answers your concerns in a logical way. The front desk is also very helpful and I especially love their wide selection of brand glasses! While they are a tad expensive from other places, with insurance I don't mind using their facility just because of their large selection. The facility is huge so it's never too crowded and they did followed all covid protocol during the pandemic as well! read more

I recently went to the Family Eyecare Center for an eye examination and new glasses. I was extremely disappointed, and will not go back. I found Dr.Lum to be hurried in the exam and rude in demeanor. There was no eye dilation, no test for glaucoma, and the test for my near vision consisted of Dr. Lum handing me a nearby brochure and asking me to read it. I was appalled!! I will definitely trust my vision to a more reputable company. read more

We love Dr. Chang, but his supportive staff is horrible and the review is for them - this occurred 18 months ago. We are going on day 3 and unable to order and pay for contact lenses and two glasses and one frame for me and my kids because of their massive screwups in the order and the bill. The receipt is a disaster. Contacts ordered under the wrong patient thus billed to insurance under wrong name. Three orders of glasses lenses for my daughter because they kept screwing up and multiple revisions. Optical department staff member literally rolled her eyes as we arrived to purchase glasses because it was late. Is it my fault my appointments were at 5 and 5:30pm?!?!!? Then she proceeded to rush, screw up after submitting authorization to the insurances and then ran out and went home without it being resolved. Boy do I wish I caught her name (Jessica). Her colleague (Laila) tried to clean it up but it was too much of a mess so they sent us home promising to have it fixed and would call me the next day for payment. Yeah, no call. No cleanup. I could go on and on. And they NEVER CALL BACK when they say they are going to. Lots of promises and no delivery. So as long as you are going just for an exam and not planning to make any purchases, then Family Eye Care Center is perfect for you. read more

Family Eyecare Center - AKA Total Sloppy Vision, Last year I had my family with this optician. Decent insurance so can receive two pairs of glasses per person. Four people so last year ordered eight pairs of glasses. Unfortunately, this year, the last three pairs were a mess. First received the incorrect orange color frame for my son, highlighted the errors, new pair was ordered, but unfortunately, they were also incorrect. Approx two months later, I received the pair of glasses we ordered, sloppy service The second pair I ordered for my daughter was totally incorrect and nothing like the frame she tried on. Again highlighted the error and was told a replacement would be shipped directly to my home. Never received it, called, and eventually, I had to drive to pick it up. The third pair were late. Called a few times, difficult to get through; highlighted glasses were urgent as my own pair had scratched; the excuse they were running late and that someone would call when ready. No one ever called. More continued sloppy service. Unfortunate, with this establishment, the Optometrists are professional, but the guys who supply the glasses and answer the phone are too unprofessional and sloppy. I will take my insurance plan to a more professional and thrustworthy establishment. read more

Part one - me Dr. Lum is incredible, he is as blind as I am, hahaha, so he understands the unique challenges with my eyesight. Our eye tech Chris was exceptional, taking the time to explain things to us. Now for the hard part... If you're VSP, and you're not needing medically necessary, please go somewhere else. VSP kicked them out of network, so they no longer can give you your full benefits. They've been very gracious during this time (they're in a lawsuit with VSP), so in the meantime they discount just about everything so that you still get your benefits. Except for medically necessary, they can only give you the out-of-benefit $250 towards your glasses/contacts. When you're a -12 contacts or -15 glasses, you're already spending a good $1500 for glasses so every bit of the medically necessary benefits are needed. So they can't honor the full benefit and if I claim the eye exam then I have to claim the contacts/glasses benefit at the same time. So, I had to pay full price for the exam and walk out with nothing, and have to find a new eye doctor within plan. My issue is that this was NOT disclosed until it was time to order the contacts. Part two - my son Know how usually a doctor's office lets you know when it's time to schedule an appointment? Not so here. So when I called to make him an appointment, we realized he hadn't seen anyone since 2022. Made him an appointment to get his eyes examined. He hadn't changed much and decided to get the same glasses he already had, and Chris was exceptional helping him with it. He explained with the VSP they would match the benefits with discounts so his glasses ended up under $500. Now for the hard part... Apparently there are two kinds of exams, one is for glasses, and one is for contacts. If you make an appointment for contacts, it includes the exam for glasses. So even though he was considering switching to contacts, we couldn't because he only had the glasses exam. Dr. Lum built Family Eyecare Center, it was his baby and it makes me sad to see how it's devolved now that it's part of Total Vision. He is the kindest man on the planet, and he knows his stuff, but right now, I'm not sure it's enough to continue using them especially since I can't get full benefits. If it wasn't for him, this would be a one star review. Chris was great but the issue is systemic. My two cents. read more

All old records were thrown out without notification. Family Eyecare had my full 35+ year medical history (physical folder). The new Total Vision only had my last two visits (digital record). The explanation I got from the staff was bizarre. "By California law we are only required to keep your medical records for 3 years!" - The staff member kept repeating this statement over and over again. - California minimum is 7 years and 10 years is recommended. Not 3 years. "You should have been notified about the records" - No email. No letter. No phone call. No digitization option. I wasn't given the chance to retrieve the folder. "This doctor isn't even here anymore and we had like 15 doctors go through here" - What does that have to do with my medical record? Did the doctor(s) take my folder?? "Only patient receipts were transferred over" - ??? No wonder my insurance dropped this place. Avoid at all cost. read more

I have been taking my girls here for years and every year I wonder if I should look for a new place. I've seen a few doctors there and they are all ok, hence the two stars. But the front desk is unprofessional and rude. They handed me a wrong bill to pay for one of the girls today, although both girls had the same exact exam. When I tried to explain they argued back and didn't question their papers. I asked her to talk to the doctor to confirm the test we had, she came back to ask me how I made my appointment. As to blame me for the wrong bill she had. Never an apology. And before all that, when I asked for explanation of coverage, I got ignored and they moved to book me an appointment for next time. Three whole years ago, I changed my legal name. Upon my next appointment with Dr. Ruiz, I informed the front desk of my legal name change. The next appointment, I saw my former name in the paper work print outs. I took that to the front desk and had them update the records properly to my legal name. I informed them that use of my former name is incredibly painful and alienating and to not retain any trace of it. My legal name is my name. Nothing else is allowed. Up until today, they used my legal name as I wanted and as is proper. When I walked into my appointment today, I checked in, was greeted by the front desk with my legal name and sat down. Ten minutes later, one of the technicians walked out and loudly called for my former name, three times, in front of other people. I figured maybe it was someone else. Then she called my last name and then my first name. It was then I knew that someone in the backroom was slyly anti-LGBT and chose to re-add my former name to my file on a side note. I looked at her paperwork and it said "Lastname, Firstname (former name)". This wasn't a mistake in the slightest -- the prior several appointments didn't have this issue. None of them had that trailing part of "(former name)". I informed them I was not doing business with them any more and left. I felt extremely upset and humiliated. I did everything in good faith, even walked them through the second appointment after my court ordered name change to ensure that I would not have to see that former name ever again. I was then assured that my former name was removed from the records and it was not relevant to preserve for any purposes. I believed that until today's appointment when that was proven without a shadow of a doubt to be false. I got an apology call where the technician admitted this was the second time it happened recently. Which actually solidifies my judgement that there's an anti-LGBT bigot within the staff setting up others for being treated badly through use of "also known as" addendums in their records. I talked to my family and we will no longer engage the services of this business. There's zero good faith explanation why my former name had to be **mentioned**, **retained** or **used** at all. Dr. Ruiz is a fine doctor but there's rot in his staff and my family will not tolerate abuse cloaked as ignorance from his staff. read more

What in the world is this place doing in business. Doctor was fine. However every peice of my experiance outside my eye exam was horrible. From the receptionists hanging up on me and constantly sending me to voice mail. To having the wrong prescription glasses made for me. Had to go back three times for adjustments. Then a month later received an additional bill that ended up being covered by my insurance. If your looking for eyewear that works and you need clear vision. GO ELSEWHERE. I gotta show Yelp love for Family Eyecare Center, my eyes peeps for the last 10+ years--especially with how well they're currently following the necessary safety measures. Last week I realized I was on my last pair of contacts and due for my annual visit, so I called and was able to get an appointment the very next day. Before entering the shop, an employee welcomed me outside, checked my temperature, gave me some hand sanitizer, and got me up to speed on how to check in and what to when entering. Then once inside, it was like a typical trip to the eye doctor...plus masks, social distancing, etc. Service is always top notch here. Everyone is friendly, makes you feel at ease, and answers any and every question. Found out I qualify for lasik, so now deciding if I wanna go through with it or not... read more

My family and I were seeing Albert Chang for over 5 years. He is such a wonderful person and gives great feedback. Unfortunately, the staff at the front desk needs a lesson in customer service. Every single person behind the desk was very rude to my wife and myself. We put up with their attitudes for over a year and finally got fed up. We just recently changed eye doctors. I've always had a good experience here! I've been coming since I was a kid and I've had Dr. Ruiz for a couple years now. He's very nice and very professional. He also wants to get to know his patients on a personal level and he asks about them. I told him I aimed for nursing school and we had a great conversation about it and I appreciate it. He's pretty quick and he's thorough during the examination. He works hard to make sure the patient is comfortable and is able to understand what he's doing while he's checking your eyes. I've also had Dr. Chang a couple of times and he was great, very professional and straightforward so I appreciate that. He explains things thoroughly as well when I ask questions. He also works to make sure the patient is comfortable. I think both are excellent doctors and you'll have a great experience with either one. Both are very efficient and very good at their job. The nurses are also very nice and professional. I remember as a kid I would hate getting air shot into my eye and my nurse never got upset when I would get anxiety over it, they were always patient and if I didn't want to then they didn't get frustrated with me. The people who help sell glasses are also really nice. They try and help me find glasses that would suit my facial structure and they would help me adjust them for comfort. They also really work to stay within my budget as well and try to not go over so I appreciate that. read more

After a decade of being a patient at Family Eyecare Center I will never go back for the kind of abuse that the front office staff dishes out. Absolutely as rude, condescending and unprofessional as it gets. When I walked in the door I was yelled at across the room in a curt unwelcoming tone by the hard looking receptionist with the long straight black hair and dark cold eyes asked if I had an appointment. I said yes. The receptionist said "Name" as if it was prison roll call. I gave my name. A HIPPA VIOLATION! The receptionist said there is a problem with your insurance. We exchanged about that then I said it would have been nice if someone had called me. The receptionist said my notes said they did in an accusatory tone. I said they did not and asked for the date and confirmed no call on my phone log. I said I did not appreciate the push back that I had been a patient there for over 10 years and I deserve to be treated with respect. She said respect worked two ways. I told the receptionist I would treat her with respect if she would behave professionally. When the front office continue to fumble with finding my insurance coverage (as they have been able to do for over a decade) and as I stood there taking in the nasty glares from the classless receptionist. I let them know that I was severing my relationship with Family Eyecare Center after 10 years. I recall this office always being busy and a little wait, but it was empty.
