I took the perimeter trail down the hill and stumbled upon the hidden pond and little falls trail. It was super peaceful and beautiful there! I also saw tons of beautiful flowers and even spotted a butterfly. The sound of birds singing was lovely to hear during my walk. If you need a rest there are a few benches along the trail. I really enjoyed exploring this place and will be back to explore further.

After many years of walking my dogs on the trail, i had to take a hiatus because the trail started feeling unsafe; and it took a lot for me to feel that way. I've biked, roller-bladed, dog-walked and used the trail to commute for years and preferred it to walking the city blocks. Being a camper of the "leave no trace" philosophy, the unkempt camp sites set up along the city trails with trash blowing around was pretty distressing. And, it was disconcerting to see odd groups of people walking in and out of the bushes with paper bagged liquor bottles at all times of day. It was sooo very nice to walk along from 18th street access to 10th and not see anything out of step with the beautiful trees, grass and river views. I walk the trail to relax, and for the first time in a long time, I was able to.

Grandview Park is a very cool place to hike - not only does it have some awesome Pittsburgh views…read morewith a beautiful, open, flat area featuring benches, picnic tables, porta-potties, trash cans, and even a working three-tier fountain for dogs and people alike, but it has a trail so forest-y that you will not believe how close it is to downtown. Grandview not only has the unique combination of city convenience and natural beauty, but the park hours are 6 AM to 11 PM which makes it a great spot for a first date. One thing to know is that while the main areas are accessible and enjoyable, the trail itself has certain parts where the branches, leaves, and vegetation grow very close to the path, so you may find yourself brushing through plants as you walk. One of the things on the path you may want to be careful about brushing up against are the several branches of what are called wineberry plants along the trail. They are beautiful and fun to spot, but be careful because the stems have thorns and they grow very close to the edges of the trail in some areas. Because the trail can get narrow in places, and it helps to be small and nimble because otherwise you will probably find yourself rubbing against these plants. There is also a hidden gem near the Grandview Park access road between Grandview Elementary and Emerald View Park where you can find two beautiful cypress trees. I have honestly never seen trees quite like these before. They look like what would happen if a regular tree had a soft and sweet little baby with a pine tree. They are unique, whimsical, and somehow both elegant and adorable at the same time. They are definitely worth taking a moment to appreciate when you are on this part of the trail. Another important thing to know is that there are some steep ledges on this trail which are no joke. You actually could get seriously hurt if you fell, so be mindful of where you are walking. Also, make sure you take this trail with someone you trust because, honestly, if someone wanted you to die, there are definitely places where they could make that happen on this trail.

There are clean bathrooms and water fountains as well. On a side note, the park is in walking distance from pretty much anything in Oakmont, including Brrkee's Ice Cream. The lower area is really where you can find a little bit of everything for kids and adults. There are covered picnic pavilions, a beautiful walking track, tennis courts, benches, water fountains, and an incredible playground that includes sprinklers. The playground area is completely enclosed with gates that latch shut. The area is perfect for kids to play and adults to sit or walk. Also, the lower area not only overlooks the river but has gated access to a set of stairs that lead down to a small "beach" sandy area. As a parent, I personally find the park to be clean, safe, and fun. Among other rules, there is not smoking and no pets allowed, which most folks do a good job of respecting and observing. I've been to the park in all four seasons and have never had a problem keeping my son busy. In short, this park has something for everyone! Check it out!

Voila, Highland Park saved the day. The thing that attracted me most was the playground that featured plenty of shade as well as playscapes that worked for various ages including babies with a soft floor. I also want to highlight that this park features hiking trails and a great view overlooking downtown Pittsburgh. It's tucked into a historic neighborhood so the drive to the park was also pleasant. If I lived in the area, I could see myself frequenting this park. Overall a wonderful experience and we will definitely visit the next time we are in Pittsburgh!

Part of the attraction is a nice backup location in the mansion in the event of bad weather. There are about 2 miles of trails of varying difficulty. The trail map could be a lot easier to find, not sure why it is not featured more prominently on their website. Mary Nimick, an avid nature lover, donated her family's estate house along with 53 acres when she died in 1971. The house hosts the offices of the Hollow Oak Land Trust, an organization that manages the nearby nature preserve. In summary, a small but well maintained park and wedding venue with beautiful trails.
