It's a casual little spot where you order at the counter, grab a seat, and let the food do the talking. The decor is an eclectic mix of Minion collectibles and what I can only describe as "yard sale chic." Somehow, instead of feeling cluttered, it just feels comfortable. Judging by the steady stream of takeout orders while I was there, the locals have already figured out what matters. And what matters is the food. I stopped in for a casual business lunch and ordered the Kua Kai. The noodles were perfectly cooked, the chicken was tender, everything tasted incredibly fresh, and the presentation was honestly much more elegant than I expected from such an unassuming little restaurant. It looked like someone genuinely cared about what landed on the plate, and it tasted that way too The person I was having lunch with actually lives in the area but had never been there before. By the end of the meal, she was already talking about coming back. Is this your anniversary dinner destination? Probably not. But if you've been together long enough that neither of you feels the need to impress the other with fancy light fixtures and reclaimed barn wood, you're going to have a fantastic meal. For me, this is an easy recommendation. Great food, friendly service, and proof that sometimes the best restaurants spend a little less money decorating the shelves and a little more effort perfecting what's on the plate.

An easy to miss, low key vibes (#1) Thai eatery along a stretch in the main strip SE McLaughlin,…read moreChang Thai was not my initial first Thai choice (#2) in this area. But unlike the other spot, it was open, not busy, and provided one of the most stellar experiences I've had in a long time. The interior is surprisingly spacious, in that they could afford many more seating options, but have elected to have the seats spread far apart. The vibe is hardly pretentious and has the feel of a family owned and operated spot. One of the initial recommendations was their red curry with peanut sauce and it didn't disappoint. There was a bit of heat and plenty of flavor with every bite. The pad see yu was excellent, had good texture, and was almost too easy to eat. Another highlight was their wings, which were juicy and very fresh. Their larb salad was refreshing and had just enough sourness from the vinegar for it to be among the favorites in our group. Washing it all down with some excellent Thai iced teas was a perfect capper. So good that I ordered another round. Customer service is very warm and familial. They were excellent about bringing out the food and making fabulous recommendations. While I had another place in my sights, I feel so fortunate to have come across this spot. It's the best kind of accident, one that bears repeating again and again. ____________ (#1) Also known as the entire city of Milwaukie. (#2) Buathong, but they were closed. My money now goes to Chang Thai and I'm not mad at it.

Buathong Thai definitely makes our top 5 Thai restaurants in Oregon. Do not pass this restaurant…read moreup, you'll regret it! The prices may turn you off at first, $20-$25 a plate, in this economy, eww... BUT Buathong does you a solid by making that $20/plate stretch. Trust me when I say, as a recently pregnant woman, currently breastfeeding hungry madwoman, the plates are easily 3-4 servings per order! This place is amazing like that... Now to the good stuff- the must orders. Pad Thai! Whether you get it with their crying tiger beef or just chicken, their pad thai is absolutely delicious! The dish is always consistent and the flavor board is spot on. I hate super sweet tasting pad thai, and Buathong lays in on the smokey, subtly saucy, perfectly sweet and sour flavors of what a pad thai dish is supposed to taste like. Their thai pho is also cooked to perfection with plenty of melt in your mouth beef cuts. Papaya salad? Refreshing, flavorful, and leaves you feeling guiltless. Honestly, I can't say enough good things about this restaurant. From the amazing food to the friendly service, this restaurant is a no-brained for us when we're in the Milwaukie area.
