Background: Our original rear patio redwood deck was initially installed in 1980, when our House was first built. Existing dark brown deck boards were lifting with plank screw fasteners exposed. After an unsuccessful attempt to use of Behr penetrating stain, boards were partially restored to a dark brown. After one year, the Behr stain began to visibly peel off of all components of the deck. Douglas fir staircase railings did not soak in or retain the Behr stain. Last year, due to heavy rain, our adjacent underground basement flooded requiring pumping to remove water transferred through the cement foundation of the home. Project Phases: Phase 1: remove all existing wood components of the existing deck. Phase 2: Excavate deck side of the House foundation, a) paint foundation with active water resistant barrier paint to cover all House foundation areas next to the back deck. Bury white 4 inch piped highly absorbent water accumulators and interconnect piping with an existing roof gutter drain system. Phase 3: Install new TREX Transcend "Tiki Torch" wood grain planks using concealed TREX fastener system complimented by new black metal rust resistant stair case fencing and railing system. Ken was one of three contractors I got bids for to repair some problems with my 16 year old deck. It's a 'Trex' type deck and is 7' wide and about 40' long. Then there are 5 steps going down to the next level which is 5' wide and 35' long. This deck is on the 2nd floor. Several boards at the end were curving up (close to the gate/stairs) - some by more than an inch. In addition what I thought was minor problem (several fascia boards loosing and coming off) turned out to be very poor construction by another contractor. Fortunately the 'bones' were in good shape. Ken found fixed the loose boards and did an excellent job. He also noticed something neither other contractor noticed... on the lower portion the one of the supports was pulling away and the deck was separating. He also fixed the original contractor's money saving (for HIM) solution to the supports to add the fascia boards. Ken and his assistant did a FANTASTIC job, and his bid was very competitive with the other two... but theirs did not include fixing the main problem they hadn't even noticed. His communications to me were both by phone and text and very impressive. Best of all, he not only told me things that caused the problems, he explained what needed to be done to fix the problems. We were looking for a new deck to replace the one we had built 19 years ago. It was rotting underneath and getting dangerous. The steps to our deck were uneven and the supports underneath were damaged. Ken poured concrete, reused our decking material and installed new hand rails that he cut out of wood. I can't say enough good things about Ken Rector's work. After a frustrating search for contractors, we hired his company to replace our disaster of a front deck. Ken quickly drew up a plan that matched the original layout of the deck and had a building permit issued the next day. I've never seen anyone work as hard as he did or take as much pride in his work. We were also happy to learn that Ken is a certified Trex Platinum Contractor. The finished deck is beautiful--and it's built to last. Unlike the original deck, the new deck and porch roof framing are now fully supported and secured with concrete piers and Simpson hardware. Ken consistently looked after the small details--pre-drilling and countersinking all of the screws and installing the deck treads with hidden fasteners. He didn't cut corners or use inferior materials. Ken also replaced the rotted siding and trim around the deck, putting in new flashing and even painting the new materials. Ken did a fantastic and very meticulous job of finishing our deck project after we had to let go of our original contractor for many reasons. He was extremely professional throughout the project first correcting all the mistakes the previous contractor created.
