I purchased a home that was built in 1958 and had very little changes since. I contacted several contractors because I had plans to remove a wall, upgrade/renovate the kitchen and bath, change all the flooring, and patch and paint all the walls. Of the contractors I met with, Barry was hands-down the most knowledgeable, respectful, professional, and thorough. He asked questions, measured everything, and looked everywhere. When the bids came in, his was apples-to-apples and oranges-to-oranges. It was complete, covered what I had asked vs. what he felt I needed, and gave me options as well as suggestions. We had some wood rot on the fascia of our 2nd story and wasn't sure if the stucco and layers underneath would need to be removed and replaced as well. I had been in touch with another local contractor several times over the course of 8 months, but his estimated time lines to do the work came and went, so I finally went on Yelp (even though I'm hesitant to trust all the reviews) to find another contractor with good reviews that might take on our relatively small project. (There are so many demos, remods, and additions going on in our neighborhood that most contractors don't want to be bothered by the small jobs that still need timely attention.) Ben and his carpenter, John, had been working on another job with another contractor/crew for weeks but he foresaw a window of time that they would likely be free to assess and address our wood rot. He came by for the initial consultation, and I immediately felt comfortable with him and confident that he would make the repairs at a fair rate. He set aside 4 days to make sure they could get it all done without having to leave mid-job for another scheduled job. Ben brought scaffolding that he had access to and did not charge us for it, which was a huge "discount" in itself. He and John set up the scaffolding in no time, were amazingly quiet, and were done in a day and a half. Wood rotted boards out, new ones installed and painted, and junk hauled away. Ben even hauled away some other junk boards and plywood that had been in the yard for over a year from a mold removal job that a different local contractor never got rid of. In the end, the cost for their work and materials was even less than the minimum that Ben had estimated. They were fantastic. On a side note, my neighbor was in a terrible bike accident while Ben and John were working at my house. After getting my neighbor home, I asked if they would install grab bars in his downstairs bathroom, as he had broken his hip and needed a few things done to accommodate his 6 to 8 weeks of homebound healing. Ben had John go over and install/set up what was needed, and within a couple of hours, things were all set for my neighbor to be as self-sufficient as possible in his recovery. Ben is an absolute gem! After reading his stellar reviews on Yelp, we initially contacted him for the purpose of building a simple outdoor cat enclosure, but in the process he discovered that our porch decking was rotting, as was a portion of our roof (due to a faulty gutter installation). Ben handled everything... re-decking our porch, reframing the damaged portion of our roof and bringing in his trusted sub-contractors to complete the job as it should have been done in the first place. We felt taken care of in every way and the completed work looks fantastic. As for the cat enclosure, he far exceeded our expectations there too. Ben and Daniel did a fantastic job rebuilding my aging deck. Ben gave me three choices of woods and separate quotes. They were organized, clean, efficient, and did beautiful work. He showed us some of his work, and we were blown away, so we decided to work with Ben for our kitchen remodeling project, and we are so happy we did. Ben put in new tile floors, and granite counter tops which right away made our kitchen feel usable again. BRL builders are a top notch company. We were in the middle of interviewing other contractors to build a 500sqf addition, when I received Ben's number. So we threw him in to the list contractors that we would interview. He was the last contractor that we contacted, yet he was the first one to get back to me with a bid and a great price. Ben always responded to our text and phone calls and that made us feel good about handing someone a check to build our addition. His guys Dan and Anthony where always pleasant and worked really hard Monday thru Friday. There was always someone working on our addition, which made everything run smoothly and stay on schedule. Behind my husband's closet is a storage area. The floor of the storage area is about 3 feet off the ground and the ceiling of the area follows the slant of the exterior roof. We needed to have the back wall of my husband's closet pushed back and the floor cut and reframed. Ben arrived to provide an estimate on time and was very professional. He evaluated the project and offered solutions. We accepted his proposal and he and Daniel showed up on time, prepped the bedroom to reduce and eliminate any dust and dirt and knocked out the wall & the floor and reframed it in just several hours. The angles required special cuts and measuring. Because my husband could do the work himself, except he doesn't have the time, he is quite critical. We were both very impressed with Ben and Daniel's work! They even saved the trim to reduce costs. We will hire BRL Builders again for a custom work area.
