I have been with Dr Mai for years and he is such a good dr that I never changed my insurance just to go to him. He is so busy I can't even talk to him on the phone so I have to talk to the NP which I told the office I just wanted to talk to him. I do not have the same experience with the female NP at that office, she is so rude. If I don't know something just tell me nicely she didn't have to say I'm wasting her time. This is ONE of the worst, Dr. office, to say the least! Kelvin Mai need to have more compassion in his work as a physician. He need to show more attention to patients who are older, having underlined conditions who is critically ill. Making an appt to see him to talk about my mom conditions and going over all the medications, he has is PA who does not qualify to care for patients and the knowledge to diagnose and make critical decisions in a life or death situations. Making assumptions and sending hoe with pills is not the way to treat a patient in critical conditions. Misdiagnosed and careless attention by Kelvin Mai, His PA is very concerning. If he or his PA are not capable in taking care of patients, they need to be addressed and educated to care for patients correctly, otherwise there are consequences and heartache for families under his care, because they are looking at him as a physician. There are a few good and bad things. Good thing: It's easy to find, big and clean place. Bad thing: I made an appointment and still have to wait for an hour to my turn. The receptionist can be rude. They check my cholesterol first time. It was high and the doctor said: 'I will prescribe you and you have to take the medicine every day or you may die in your 40s. I'm still 20s. But I was lazy to find a new one so I stayed and checked up for the second time after 6 months. It was fine. I just exercised and ate healthy. Now I decide to change my primary care. I am extremely angry with Kelvin Mai's decision regarding a friend's vaccines. They need to get two specific vaccines in order to attend college or else she can not attend. After struggling to get it, Kelvin Mai refused to get her the vaccines because he would need to order in bulk. I think if you really want to help people, you would risk the money so a student can go attend college. It seem more like he wants the money than to protect the people. i am not a patient, was going to be but due to an unexpected incident that came up that made me decided to forget about this clinic because this place put money as priority. I have pink eye that needed treatment and called in for an appointment. they were able to give me an appointment so i was very grateful at first. i came in without my insurance card but i knew it was Arta under Aetna. I asked if the MA call Aetna for me but they cancelled my appointment and told me i had to call myself because that was the new law. I spent two hours on the line with Aetna and funny thing when the rep ask me why didn't i ask the office to call in, it would have been so much faster. but at the end, Aetna will fax the letter of approval to the office and advised me to call the office to see if i am able to get seen today. i called the office to see if i can be seen but the MA main concern was if i do have insurance under Kelvin Mai. i confirmed yes, but all she care was if they will get paid. at the end, she said fine, she will let me go in for my treatment, worst comes to worst, they will bill me if they cannot verify my insurance. I was very angry... i asked her what the heck is her problem, while a patient is in urgent condition that needed to be seen, as a healthcare professional, i would think the patient's health is priority but obviously money beats my health. she said it is not about money. i reminded her that i did asked her to call Aetna for me but they refused by saying new laws suggested for members to call in but in fact the office should have been the people to contact the insurance company in these kinda of situation. she then told me the last time she called, they were on hold for 30 minutes so Dr. Mai himself made it a rule in the office not to let his staff contact insurance company to verify his patients because he do not want them to be on the phone too long. I am sorry, i know there are other patients that needs the care so that 30 minutes that 1 MA could be on the phone to help me, who is also a patient that is standing in front of them in the office with a pink eye, i needed the care just as much as anyone. i don't know how good of a doctor he may be, but as a healthcare professional working in the health industry, there was an oath that was taken to put the health of others above all. this is work ethics, this office really do not have any human compassion. FYI, i am in the health industry and have worked as an MA and now hold a Health Education Degree from California State University of Long Beach. I know what i am talking about and please, if anyone from this office ever read this, change the way to look at people because nobody is ever healthy coming in to see you and it is all of your jobs to treat everyone with respect and dignity. although the approval was faxed over for me to be seen, i have decided it would be best to go to the urgent care because at least i know i am there to get treated... read more

Two years ago, I tripped and fell, breaking my left arm. After trying to find a doctor, I went to the Cal-Optima site and found the doctor they'd assigned me. The Good: Dr. Mai is gold. He listened to me, was very polite, got me a referral to a radiologist to get my arm x-rayed, and was everything a god doctor should be. The Bad: One of his receptionists, June Lee was very rude. I noticed while in the waiting room that whenever a non-Vietnamese person walked in and spoke to the receptionist, she was very rude. When a Vietnamese person walked in, she was nice. The Ugly: I asked for the doctor's business card in English, because what they had was in Vietnamese. Yep, got yelled at. Sorry, lady, but I'm not going to learn to read Vietnamese . You might want to watch your attitude, and get some English business cards printed and available. English is the most widely spoken language in the world, and it's been the official language of the U.S. since 1776. If you're going to deal with the public, you need to be patient and kind. Dr. Mai has definitely changed from when he first started off his career as a doctor in his original Santa Ana location. I can definitely see through his eyes that something is bothering him. He is not the same caring and enthusiastic doctor he once was back in the early 2010s. When you ask this guy a question, he sometimes does not respond or even acknowledge your question. He seems to just want to get through his patients as quickly as possible. A part of me feels bad for him because physician burnout is definitely a problem, but he needs to put this beside himself and know that once he puts on that white coat, he needs to be a professional. He needs to stop treating some of his patients like a walking illness and instead provide patient-centered care, regardless of ethnicity. I'm not making this stuff up either. This is the core philosophy of a D.O (doctor of osteopathic medicine) which you can look up yourself. The receptionists aren't very pleasant either. I don't know why they must shout across the hallway. In conclusion, if you're looking for a physician that treats you as more than just a symptom, considers all of your background/psychosocial status, and seeks out less invasive treatment options before hammering away at medications AND if you're looking for receptionists that aren't rude.. then definitely do not come here. read more

I switched my doctor care to this doctor and he's a piece of shit. I have severe coughing especially at night and my old doctor prescribed me a drug and said "if it didn't work I could get a specific drug but would have to come back." But at that time I already had to switch doctors. I've been to this doctor twice and he just comes into the room and laughs at my symptoms and argues back at every statement I try to make about my symptom and ends up prescribing me the same thing my old doctor prescribed me after bringing the bottle in and saying to him "it does not work." He keeps constantly smiling like he didn't care about what I had to say and then left my room, it's like he had no sign of caring for his patients I highly suggest you guys don't go to this doctor and switch as soon as possible if you are. I called to make an appointment with Dr. Mai and there's a lady rushing on my phone call. She said "bye" quickly while I was trying to ask a question. When I took my parents to visit dr. Mai, they made us wait for so long and it only took the doctor less than 5 minutes to talk with my parents (for fun) and to check on their heartbeats. He didn't say anything about their health except "good". The doctor seemed to try to get things done ASAP so that he could get to another patient. I can see from his eyes there's something bothering him when he looked at me. The only reason my parents chose him to be their family doctor was he could speak Vietnamese. I wouldn't recommend Dr. Mai and will find my parents another family doctor soon. For old Vietnamese people, you can always ask for a translator at most of doctor's office. I'm in California temporarily and needed to see a doctor I wanted to see a general Doctor rather than going to an urgent care...I called to see if they were excepting new patients and if it would be possible to see them with in the week...the women on the phone was extremely hard to understand but I was able to make out that they do take walk ins and it wasn't busy in the early afternoon....so I hurried up over there only to have met two of the most rudest receptionist in my life....I walked in one was helping an elderly man and the other one was on the phone ...I walked up to the one on the phone..and obviously waited patiently for her to finish...i completely understood she was on the phone and was ok with it...after she hung up the phone I said "hi..i calllle..." She picked up another call before i could even finish ....so I thought ok I can wait a second ...after that phone call she continued to keep answering the phone.....I still waited patiently.....after about the fourth or fifth phone call she looked up at me with the ugliest angriest expression as if I was tapping my fingers impatiently at her or something and said in a snapping raised tone " I'm a very busy"...I said ok ...she waived me over to the other receptionist so I went and she said the doctors out he'll be back at three do you want to wait it was 2:40..I asked if it would be a long wait when he got back and with an attitude and an ugly mean tone so "well do you want to wait or not"...these two women treated me very poorly...with the way they spoke to me and looked at me ...I honestly feel that they treated me this way because I do not look Asian...I've never felt discriminated against like they made me feel here. Dr. Mai is great doctor with a great sense of humor. (I know, doctors don't have good sense of humor, but Dr. Mai is funny). The best part is that he is very knowledgeable and very thorough with patients. He cares a great deal about you. He has been our doctor for a while, but the incident below prompted me to write a review. My husband had a severe allergic reaction with a flu shot a few months ago. He developed a very bad rash and it itched all over. It was on a weekend, and Dr. Mai's office was packed. However, he took the time to check on my husband. After giving us a prescription, he said to call him any time if the condition didn't get improved. He said my husband might need shots, but he wanted to try the medication first. Well, my husband didn't get worse but didn't get a lot better. We called and Dr. Mai asked us to come back. He waited for us at the office (it was late), and gave my husband the steroid shots. He monitored him for about an hour to make sure the condition improved. He mentioned that my husband's case is rare, but it does happen time to time. I noticed that he did have to cancel a prior commitment with his wife to take care of my husband (I overheard him on the phone). I guess Dr. Mai will always be our primary care doctor. read more

I went to see Dr. Kelvin Mai for first time. waiting for 30 minutes to clarify my Obama care insurance and got no copay for preventive annual exam. But the staff are friendly and helpful. I am very impressive about his knowledge about medicine including preventive care and mental health. He answered all my questions exceeding my expectation of a primary care doctor. I wouldn't recommend this doctor. For college, I had to go get some shots before entering in as a freshman, however, upon arriving at the clinic, I was told that they didn't have the vaccines in stock. So, Dr. Mai recommended to go to CVS or Walgreens to get the shots. A few weeks later, my parents got the bill from the clinic. I understand that even seeing the doctor costs money, but what was unbelievable was that it costed around $120!!! I didn't even get what I came there for, but was charged over a hundred dollars for a "check up"?!?!?! This doesn't seem fair to me. In addition to this, a negative comment I have about the clinic is that it's incredibly slow. I had an appointment made at 4:45, but it wasn't till almost an hour later that I went in.
