Quoted us $4500 verbally to cut up fallen trees and remove some of the larger rounds. Did not give us a written contract. We purchased a tree from Kelly's Nursery (keeping business in the county), for a memorial garden for one of my best friends, my father. It took months for us to get this tree from Kelly's, I found it four months before I knew pops would pass and started planning his garden. 3 months later the tree still hadn't arrived. A few weeks after pops passed I went to Kelly's, and very emotionally asked that the tree be delivered that week. We paid for installation of the tree with additional humus to be added to feed the tree. We specifically mentioned that it was important that the crew that came to handle installation speak English, when they arrived no one spoke English. In addition they attempted to drop the tree in our yard and leave, attempting to argue with me (not a good choice) at the same time. Having had so much communication with Kelly's I had the cell number of Tim, the manager at the time, and proceeded to call him. I first mentioned the language barrier and then the fact that we paid for a service and his staff was refusing to do the work. He resolved the issue assuring us there would be no further problems. The tree we purchased from Kelly's nursery and had them install died within a year. Once we realized the tree was in danger we immediately contacted Kelly's nursery. They put us off for months until the tree was finally dead. My husband called Kelly's and was told they only replaced trees that they installed. He informed them that they had in fact installed the tree, at which point he was told they had no responsibility and would not replace the tree. Throughout this situation we have contacted several local nurseries we were informed that Kelly's had to know early on the tree was sick and several local nurseries have a replacement policy of any tree that dies within the first year. Many offered to come and remove the dead tree given the circumstance for which it was planted. We declined and have done everyhing ourselves this time. We have the new tree so we can now proceed with the rest of the garden installation, our hope is that no one else has to endure such poor customer service again. Looks like we're another customer to be taken advantage of by what was believed to be local expertise. Less than a year after spending thousands of dollars in landscaping, more than half of the roses are dead (due to improper mounding), three trees are dead, and every other flower in the front yard is dying. One of our only requests we're no yellow, and guess what litters the front yard.. yellow. The unhealthy dying privacy trees are all we were really concerned about, but as others have stated they don't care once the money is in their hands. They won't answer the phone or respond to any other communication. They push for you to purchase what is conveniently in stock for them and will tell you what you want to hear.. beware! read more

On 9/25/2014, I purchased 30 Emerald Green Arborvitaes from Kelly's Nursery. I originally visited them to purchase Leeland Cyprus'es instead, but they 100% convinced me otherwise and told me the Arborvitaes would easily grow 20+ feet tall for much less maintenance with a discounted price. Trusting what I thought were local experts here in Calvert County, they completely lied and played me just to sell what they had in stock... and of poor quality. The trees came "on time" a few days later (as they were happy to be rid of them), and they would not cooperate ever since I immediately noticed there were major problems with the trees (including being infested with bagworms). After thoroughly communicating problems to them over the next 2-3 weeks, the owner (Kelly himself) started becoming extremely rude and blatantly lieing (saying that it had been months since I placed my order etc). I was even told by Mike and Kelly that the trees don't typically grow anywhere near as tall as what they advertised to me after I purchased them. This is bait and switch marketing where I lost nearly $3,000. Please do not support this kind of horrible business practice and/or people in Calvert County. My first experience with Kelly's Tree Srvc and I can't say enough about the quality of service. Sunday evening a large tree fell and landed against my house. I called Kelly's on Monday and receive a reasonable estimate within hours. Had the tree removed the next day. Thank you Kelly's for responding so quickly. The entire crew did an outstanding job. My personal opinion of Kelly Landscaping and Tree Service is not very good when it comes to their business practices. I purchased a tree from this nursery and paid for Kelly to install it. It died within 5-6 months. "No problem I thought," I will just let them know so they could come out and replace it. I went back to the nursery and talked to Kelly directly. He immediately told me "no problem" and that he would "take care of it." He stated that he did not have any of the particular tree that I purchased in stock but should have some within a week. After three weeks went by and I did not hear anything from him, I paid the nursery another visit to inquire on the status of the replacement tree. Kelly was not there so I left my contact information with the receptionist to have him give me a call. This process repeated almost weekly for TWO MONTHS! Each time I came in or called, his staff would tell me that they gave him the message and they were not sure why he had not called me back. I even left messages on his personal cell phone. It was obvious that he was avoiding me for some reason... In my opinion, he is not professional at all. About 2 months into this ordeal a replacement tree finally arrived. However, no one ever called me to let me know that it was in. I noticed the lone tree at the nursery while there buying additional supplies. Since the tree that I saw was MUCH smaller than the one he installed earlier, I assumed the replacement tree was for another customer. Eventually, after waiting 3 months for Kelly to either call me or replace the tree, I requested a refund for what I paid for the tree and the installation. I was initially told by his employee that a refund would be processed that day (it was not). I called a week later to get a status on the refund. The employee I was dealing with told me that Kelly would not let him issue the refund and would not give him a reason why. I was eventually forced to file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau. To my surprise, Kelly responded but his response was riddled with lies. He stated that he: "...had one of his nursery employees call me to tell me that the tree had arrived." This simply did not happen. No one ever called me to tell me that a tree had arrived. Weeks went by with no phone call. I then visited the nursery weekly for another 4-6 weeks to inquire without an explanation from Mr. McConkey as to the delay in the delivery of my new tree. Each time I visited, he was "not there" and his employees took my name and number to pass to him. "...when I came to the nursery and saw the tree, I told him and the employee that I did not want the tree." Kelly has NEVER spoken to me other than my initial visit when I reported that the tree had died. In fact, each time I returned, his employees would tell me that "they gave him the message, and they were not sure why he did not return my calls." This went on for two to three months without a return phone call which led to the above referenced BBB complaint. "...He explained that [the replacement tree] was approximately the same size and that he was sorry that I was not satisfied, but that he wasn't going to order another tree." Again, this is also a lie... The issue with the size of the tree was never discussed with Kelly as he has not had a conversation with me other than my initial visit. I am not sure why he would state this as it is not true. The issue of the tree size came to light when I visited the store to buy additional items and happened to notice a much smaller tree. I did not have a conversation at that time with anyone on the size of the tree. It was during a subsequent phone call with one of his employees that I inquired if the smaller tree was my replacement. He told me "yes" and this is when I told him I would rather have a store credit as the replacement tree was much smaller than the one I purchased. "...after the first few phone calls from me, he realized that he would be unable to satisfy me, which he explained to me in no uncertain terms." Again, this statement puzzles me as Kelly has not spoken to me. This is simply a lie. "...contributing factors could be, but not limited to; weather, care and maintenance, soil, etc...these are some of the reason why we cannot guarantee our plants..." He even went on to suggest the reason that the tree died was because of last year's earthquake and hurricane. Plausible, but not factual as the tree survived these two events along with the other $4000 in new landscaping I had installed by Ed's Plant Word. I did not notice the tree died until this past spring when it did not bloom with the rest of the landscaping. Kelly also pointed out that at the bottom of his invoice it states that they do not guarantee any of their plants... If this were the case, why did Mr. McConkey offer to replace the tree or refund my money and not immediately point me to his "policy?" MY RECOMMENDATION IS TO STAY CLEAR!!!!!!! read more

Nursery is cluttered and not easy to navigate. I've gone to pick certain trees from there and they had grown root through the pot and into the ground. They told me that I couldn't buy that particular tree or any tree that was grown into the ground. Their prices are outrageous and never have what I need. If they do happen to have bulk stone or topsoil it is always way above average price. I refuse to go there anymore. read more

My wife and I bought 37 leyland cypress from Kelly's Nursery in April 2012. The trees were brown and had no branches on the bottom but Kelly McConkey personally reassured us that the branches would regrow after we planted them. The trees weren't doing well so we called the nursery in July and October and each time Mr. McConkey said the store had a no return policy and that there was nothing we could do. In February we found from Wentworth nursery that the branches of leylands do not regrow. We called the nursery and left messages on his cell phone trying to talk to Kelly about the situation and asking for replacement trees. He wouldn't return any messages and we even sent a certified letter which he never picked up. After calling 3 times in 3 days in May he finally texted us. He refused to replace our trees despite our purchasing them solely on his assurance that the branches would regrow. He offered to sell us replacement trees at cost, but we wanted nothing more to do with his company. We felt taken advantage of as naïve tree buyers relying on the advice of who we thought was an expert and a professional. We can not urge you more strongly to take your business elsewhere. read more
