The store itself has drastically improved under new ownership from inventory, payment duration(old owner used to be on dial up internet so debit transactions would take up to a minute or 2), and customer service. The new owner has always been welcoming and respectful since taking over. I'm not much of a craft beer drinker, but they seem to have one of the largest selections out of any other San Jose liquor stores. read more

They update all the time with new shipments, reviews of their beers, pictures of cute dogs, AND let you know when Nito's Taco Truck ($5 for 3 tacos!) is swinging around, so even if you're only a casual instagram user, it's worth following them for any rare beer shipments they have (and they have a lot!). If their social media presence wasn't a giveaway, they're generally a lot better than neighborhood liquor stores for sourcing craft beers. The shop is a little bit dingy, which is to be expected, but they always have a good selection of craft beers available (4 full freezer cabinets), so I always end up checking it out whenever I'm in the area. Overall if you're looking to support small business (and you should!) and get some great beer in the process, Kelly's Liquors is definitely one of my favorites. read more

My friend and I walked into the store to purchase drinks tonight. We ended up walking out because the owner decided to tell a story about a customer who was flirting with him who was a "dude with female parts on top." My partner and I found this comment disgusting and unprofessional. Not to mention the line was to the back, and the counter person was stalling. We ended up leaving our drinks and walking out. This liquor store has always been my go-to when I run out of booze since it's so close to my house, but the new owners have really improved the place. They are always super friendly and just really nice to talk with for the two minutes I'm in there. The prices are about normal for a neighborhood liquor store. Not the cheapest but really convenient so it still makes sense to go there. I don't think I've even gotten anything but liquor, but they do have a couple aisles of other items. This store is convenient in the neighborhood. I like to go here for that reason. I would rather support a small business . Few things I feel need improvement. They are always low on hard kombucha and have low quality wine . Even table wine choices should be chosen better by management. There's so many variety table wine to choose from. I bought wine twice here and both times they were not good. A table wine specifically I bought yesterday was Altos Del Plata Chardonnay 2019 ,Medoza-Argentina. Usually Argentina white wine taste pretty descent regardless the low cost because wine is much cheaper in South America and Europe with the variety of white table wine to choose from . This one went bad or something . It was difficult to finish a glass. That bad ! I went hoping to grab something I can enjoy after a long day of studying . This was just disappointing. I don't know if they went bad before I bought them or something . On the wine note please wipe down your shelves and wines . I know it's not the most favorable but obviously customers do have interest for this . Most wine customers will just not buy this if it's dusty . Maybe that can be hurting your sales in this area. Also to add to this if the gentleman behind the counter had a friendly smile or personality it would the visit more pleasant and rating better . Not sure if there's different cashiers here or same person every time these last several months . I feel in a small business every person behind the counter should make the purchaser feel they want to return with a simple smile or "goodbye greeting ." Hope these suggestions help the business owner. I'm sure all local customers want to continue to support this store over target or a big grocery store. Much better than your average overpriced liquor store but it sure has a small selection compared to the liquor store that I go to in Santa Clara. Friendly guys working. One guy walked me to the IPA area and showed me what they have. Disappointed that they did not have Pliny the Elder but was filled w/ excitement when I saw Lagunitas Sucks; Craig's all time favorite beer. Or at least one of his favorite beers. Located near Japantown, parking can be hellish but luckily I parked right in front. The front is a green zone so it is limited, meant for curing quick alcohol fixes. This is my go-to liquor store in San Jose. They have a really wide and varied selection of craft beer, as well as many mixers and pretty much any liquor you'd be looking for. The prices are a bit high, but I don't mind spending a bit more to support a small business with such a great inventory. They're always stocked and every time I've been here I've found something new to try. The customer service isn't the best but who cares? You spend all of five minutes in the store. Only other con of this place is the lack of air conditioning during hot days. Sheesh! Need ta crack open a cold one while I'm still in the store. read more

Looks can often be deceiving! Kelly's looks like every other liquor store scattered around San Jose but what they do best is offer great beer at affordable prices. If you're looking for craft beers look no further than Kelly's. They have a great selection of California craft beer and other breweries. They also carry the usual liquor store offerings including hard liquor, cheap alcohol, and some snacks. Definitely stop by if you're in North San Jose or near Japantown and feel like craft beer. read more

Being a resident of Japantown going on eight years, I have seen Kelly's evolve. I remember moving out here from the East and wanting to try more New Belgium after being introduced to Fat Tire. Supermarkets did not carry that much craft beer at the time and so I found it down the street @ Kelly's. Just living close by, I've randomly walked in and bought different beers on a whim like Sierra Nevada's Torpedo before drinking craft beer was a 'thing'. There is new a new cast of characters there now that are keeping that spirit going and contributing to the beer community. They know their beer but they now do a better job alerting their regulars to what comes in stock via Facebook. Kelly's is not a gigantic store but you can get great beer/wine options ranging from cheap to amazing. If it's convenient for you, this should be a part of your rotation. Corrections: 1. Due to my own ignorance, I would like to state that I am wrong in stating that Kelly's is expensive. I would say it's normal compared to similar stores now that I have more experience in bottle shops. 2. Within the last 7 months of my first review, I will say that without thinking... I've become a weekly regular again. At one time, I would say that I shopped for beer at Kelly's exclusively ... then due to some options near my work place and where I hung out -- things changed. Kelly's is part of my secret beer trifecta. The bottom line: Kelly's is the best North San Jose option for craft beer and especially for fresh/local stock like IPAs. This liquor store is only a block away from where I live and we usually come here to grab beer and wine and occasionally snacks. I also like the fact that this place sells milk and butter. I was in need of milk and butter for one of my baking frenzies and was able to purchase some here for reasonable prices. Five Stars for a Liquor Store, yeah I usually don't do that unless they have great taste in the products they choose to sell, which is why Kelly's makes the cut. If you are a lover of fine craft beers, you'll love Kelly's. They have great selections and Supurb Seasonal brews, which is important this time of year. As soon as I saw the Delirium Noel, I put down my first selection and convinced my guy that it would be great even though it's a little pricey. It's worth every sip. We also tried one of the newer ones from the New Belgium Brewery, something with orange essance. Both were delicious and we were happy we made the little detour to find Kelly's. read more

This review is for 3.5 stars. As far as neighborhood liquor stores go, Kelly's is great. A bunch of wine and the usual suspects as far as liquor, coupled with the mini versions. The beer selection looked good from far away, but upon closer inspection, most of the more rare varieties were sold out and they were left with the California giants and only big bottles. I cam here because I heard about the craft beer selection, but I was disappointed on that front. As a store, it's a little run down and the neighborhood surrounding seemed a bit crummy with a bunch of stragglers you need to walk through to get in. Other than the sketchy outside and the disappointing beer selection, Kelly's has everything you'll need for a good night. read more

I just went there a minute ago. I wanted to buy Gin for a present to one of my client. One guy came in and recommended me several brands. I chose one brand and wanted to get a bottle with good brand tag (because the one He gave me had the brad tag a bit ruined). I asked nicely and he rudely said "what do you mean? Everything is the same!" And he goes mumbling and put another bottle in front of me like its a piece of meat. I said "why are you so rude? I asked nicely" and he goes with " you are the one with that attitude! We have right to refuse customers bla bla bla, do you have a problem?" Clearly they have no clue about customer services, and even disrespect me and keep saying rude things. One other guy receive my payment and continue silence. If i am not in the hurry I won't buy from them. He is the rudest seller that I have ever met in my life. Clearly he is looking for a fight. read more

OH MY GOD! THE BEER SELECTION HERE IS AWESOME. It looks like a regular liquor store outside but when you go inside, walk straight and to your left... the almighty beers that you're thirsty for. Stouts, IPAS, Porters, Belgians, etc. they have it here. I'm a huge fan of stout/porter beers so that's generally what I get. The last time I was here which was yesterday (10/25)... THEY HAD THE KARL STRAUSS PEANUTBUTTER CUP PORTER! So I was very ecstatic to have it. OMFG. Delish AF. People working here are also nice. Major plus! read more

If you live anywhere near San Jose and enjoy Craft Beers then you need to go to Kelly's now, no need to even finish the review. Since those who haven't been there have no doubt already left I will speak to those who have been there before. Kelly's liquors beers are amazing aren't they? I haven't been able to find breweries like Russian River anywhere else in a near vacinity. I spent 20 minutes searching Bevmo for it (because the staff member said they had it). What is interesting about Kelly's is that it is just an everyday corner liquor store, having all the essentials, candy and the like. But once you get to the back corner you are confronted with 4 fridges of craft beers. It seems a blind man could pick a great beer from the selection they have. I have yet to find any other place that matches Kelly's in terms of quality and size of selection combined. Some places have more beers, but it seems to just mean that they have a lot of not so good beers. Kelly's is different because they seem to have the best quality control of any place around. Only the best beers (and seemingly mainly from the north coast). read more

Now, I may be biased because I come from Oakland/San Francisco where the craft beer scene is flying, but Kelly's fails. I just moved to San Jose and from what I have gathered (going to other liquor stores, ISO Beers, OG etc...) Kelly's has a decent selection of beer for the area. My problem is that I have been there three times now and each time I have purchased a different beer that has ended up tasting totally off. I am an avid homebrewer and I love all sorts of beers. I have purchased Drake's Denoginzer, Oskar Blues Pilsner, and Guiness American Lager. Each has tasted uber skunky. Kelly's is obviously not taking care of their beers. The beers each had off notes not normally associated with these beers and are usually attributed to contact with light. This makes me really sad, because I live 1 block away. Maybe if someone from the store reads this they can help me understand why this keeps happening. I love Drakes Denog and it is undrinkable. Lots of money wasted here. Selection is important, but if you can't take care of your beers than you have nothing. read more

What a gem to discover in a mostly residential downtown neighborhood. Unbelievable rotation of domestic and imported craft brews. Its like a little candy shop for beer enthusiasts. The store manager Brandon is a awesome guy, who is enthusiastic about beers & unique, special finds in particular....totally knows his stuff. He was so cool to us and made us feel very welcome. How great to talk to someone who loves beer and really top shelf belgiums too, was really fun for me. I plan to return again and again....fun seeing what we may find next time. Lived near Kelly's for a few years and never went in. Then last year I moved to east San Jose and found myself in Kelly's on a search for some rare brews since you good people on yelp recommended them. Why oh why did I not find them sooner??? I have been drinking dark beer for over twenty years and although I like the occasional local craft brew, I find myself steering towards Bavarian lagers and in the last few years have been frustrated with the over abundant representation of Belgian beers and how it seems to overshadow other European styles in terms of availability. Sure there's BevMo, but I want more than they can give. So I stumbled across a few brews from the oldest monastery brewery in the world, circa 1050 AD, Weltenburger Kloster, based out of Kelheim, Germany, a little less than an hour outside of Munich, or Munchen as the Germans call it. Found that beer on a chance hiking trip to the tourist club co-op on mt. Tam and have been seeking it out more and more each year. Even made a dream trip to the brewery monastery itself along the Danube river. It was picturesque and better than I imagined. However, sadly, I couldn't find it for sale to take home anywhere up until a year ago. It was only available at 4 bars in the Bay Area and sometimes those would run out. I am still shocked that BevMo doesn't stock this legendary beer. I have asked several of their store managers and it has to do with key distributors. Step in Gourmet Haus Stadt in redwood city. Bavarian store and bar and they sell Weltenburger by the bottle to carry out. They have a whole wall full of it, five or so flavors. So I bring a bottle by for the manager at Kelly's to try along with another one. He likes it and says to check back in a few weeks. Fast forward 4 months. I got busy and live some five miles from Kelly's now, but I made it there yesterday just for fun, but figuring they probably weren't stocking this beer yet. WRONG!!! Along two cooler shelves they are now stocking 7 flavors of Weltenburger!!! Sweet score of the year, Kelly's you made my day. They even had a flavor i hadn't tried before. My top two picks are the Baroch Dunkel and Urtyrp Hell. I thanked the manager and we shot the bull for ten minutes. Great people. Can't recommend Kelly's enough. From the outside Kelly looks like any other generic liquor store in the area. Heck I think there is one across the street from it. And initially walking in looks like your run of the mill convenience store: an aisle of snacks, a case of non-alcoholic drinks, booze and crap domestic beer. But turn that corner and now I know why that girl recommended it: a great selection of craft beers, ranging from solid seasonals, choice classics, and even some rare stuff like Vertical Epic 12. Ballast Point, Deschuttes, Stone and more. The staff is also helpful and great to chat with. Regulars of all walks of life will be remembered and it is worth returning to. read more

Why? Curation. Kelly's is run by people who love craft beer, and know a lot about it. They get the good stuff. The kind of beer you're excited to see in the cooler. The kind of stuff that you might want to leave work early to snag. Follow them on Facebook and you'll get updates on what's new and good. Go into the store and ask about a beer they carry, chances are the staff will have had it or at least know something about it. The craft beer world is huge and growing every day. A store like BevMo gets a lot of it, and that's great, but it's not the kind of place that carries beer that's really interesting, or new, or rare. Kelly's does. This place is AMAZING. I was literally dumbfounded upon seeing their selection. I always thought San Jose lacked in the craft beer culture until I found Kelly's. Kelly's Liquor is definitely a hidden gem of San Jose. The guys up front were pretty cool too. Brandon knew his stuff and was a dope, down to earth dude. He helped us choose different beers for both the ladies and guys in my group. If you're looking to expand your palette and if you like beer (even if you don't like beer), CHECK THIS PLACE OUT.
