I was introduced to this bakery by friends who are absolutely in love with Kelly's! Decor: this entire bakery is 100% Pinterest worthy. Super cute interiors, especially since it's Christmas time! Cupcakes and pastries are displayed on marble countertops, and everything looks mouth watering. Pastries: I ordered a chocolate cranberry cupcake and a raspberry coconut loaf. Both were absolutely delicious! I've never really tried vegan/ gluten free pastries before but I was pleasantly surprised. Everything was flavorful and moist, which totally flipped my expectations of gluten free food being more dry/ dense. After looking at their recipes, it seems that they use quite a bit of palm/ vegetable shortening... so remember, vegan/gluten free doesn't always mean healthier! Both my fiancé and I love coming here when we need our sweet tooth fix! My favourite cupcake from Kelly's was unfortunately limited edition (July feature - Root Beer Float) but their cupcakes are all pretty good. Upon walking in, the smell of this busy vegan and gluten free bakery in Burlington was amazing! It's really cute with its pretty decor and a few tables for people to lounge around in. It was busy until closing when I visited last Saturday night during Easter long weekend. Their freshly baked treats display was nicely put together. They had several different kinds of cupcakes in unique flavours, cookies, bars and brownies. I honestly had a hard time deciding between the blueberry pie cupcake and the mile high brownie but the brownie was highly recommended by the staff member that helped me out. Apparently it's their #1 best seller! My first impression of this $6 something brownie was that it was obviously chocolatey but surprisingly not too sweet. It was tasty enough and my husband who doesn't normally like sweets didn't mind the taste. It was decent but it didn't wow me. I guess my expectations were higher based on some of the Yelp reviews of this place and they obviously have a loyal customer base from what I saw, so this may have been an off item for me personally. Maybe their treats are an acquired taste since it's vegan, gluten free, dairy free etc.? Food: got vegan soft serve swirl w brownie crumbs and cookie dough. Both my friend and I were quite underwhelmed when they came out lol. Despite reading "crumbs" I was expecting brownie chunks...those crumbs are definitely not worth a dollar. Cookie dough is 1 tablespoon round. ok, but not worth a dollar. Soft serve itself just tasted pretty plain but no coconut flavour considering it's coconut based. Tried some of their vegan caramel syrup. Didn't like this at all. It was almost gelatinous. Customer service - phenomenal. the most happy people to serve you! Overall : if I happen to return to Burlington I would definitely try some of their other baked goods - just don't think I'd go out of my way. read more

I have always seen the shop but never new it was vegan...whoo hoo! I purchased the matcha tea cupcake and the banana chocolate chip loaf. It was pretty busy on a sunday at 1pm. Now on to the sweet treats...sweet but not to sweet,just the way I like it. Although I couldn't get over a certain after taste. I was distracted by all the good looking cakes so I didn't really look at the ingredients, what flour do you guys use? It had this griddy after taste like a chickpea flour or brown rice flour I can't but my tongue on it. The cakes were very moist and flavourful. I will have to go back and try different treats but comparing to Bloomers or urban herbivore or Bunners treats I still prefer there's....all of there's and only because there was no after taste. Just an update: I recently tried their soft serve ice cream with brownie crumbs and cookie dough. I really want to like this place but the ice cream had no flavour and the cookie dough tasted again like chickpea flour or something. Friendly staff but looks can be deceiving... Tried the "award winning" dulce de leche cupcake. While it looked fantastic, it was bland and not very exciting in flavour. I am used to gluten free and grain-free home baking, and this did not compare in taste. Conclusion: quality of the product is not worth the money. Also they were selling soy products. If you haven't read up on soy additives in things like dairy free ice cream, you should. It is the farthest thing from healthy. Make your own banana soft serve instead! read more

Ok so this joint...is worth the drive to Burlington! Holy crap these bad boys are gooooood! Cupcakes phenomenal! Brownies to die for and their Nanaimo bars are so good as well! Totally VEGAN and Gluten free but you'd never know it they're so good! Be aware the line ups are always there! So be prepared to wait a little to get your sugar fix on, and also they run out of certain flavours faster than others. I love the carrot cake and the one that has a little sugar dusted donut on top! There aren't many places that have gluten free vegan desserts so I thought I'd try it out just to see how it compared to bunners bake shop in Toronto. I think I've come to the conclusion that although there are gluten free vegan alternatives to make goods, they just can't compare to the real thing. That said, if you just can't have the real thing then this isn't a terrible alternative. I bought three cupcakes. The snickerdoodle, the chocolate, and the black and white. The snickerdoodle was actually very good and on par with any good cupcake out there. It made my expectations for the chocolate cupcake high which was unfortunate because it was mediocre and lacked the punch a non vegan chocolate cupcake has. I gave the black and white cupcake to my sister so I didn't have a chance to try it. The atmosphere was cute, and the staff was very friendly and sweet. The price was high for a cupcake, even higher than bunners, but for specialty foods it is what it is. It was very busy for a Sunday afternoon, so they're doing something right. If I had a gluten allergy I'd probably return, but since I don't, I'll stick to my gluten rich, dairy full desserts. read more

However I could only compare to my local vegan cupcake source and this is where Kelly's falls. I will preface my opinion that my treats had a night in the freezer and an overnight at room temperature because of travel, so I didn't have them at their optimal best. Taking that into consideration, I still think the carrot cake and chocolate cupcakes (limited choices near end of day) were only okay. The icing was good but the cupcakes lacked full flavour. Not enough punch. Just meh. I also tried the mile high brownie. Strangely, I only enjoyed the bottom brownie. The top frosting was too sugary and the brownie had too much cocoa aftertaste. I finally got to visit Kelly's storefront after having her cupcakes several times and it was such a treat! The cupcake of the month is a maple bac'un cupcake that was a perfect mix of sweet and decadent with salty and smoky. A truly inspired cupcake. The ducle de leche cupcake is my favorite. It has a caramel core and caramel drizzle on top. I absolutely love the frosting and I am generally not a frosting person; I wish I could describe the feeling of biting through it. It melts in your mouth. We also got to try their vegan softserve ice cream which they just started serving last week. It is incredible! You wouldn't know it isn't dairy unless you notice that it's not making your mouth slimy. I have had a half dozen different cupcakes from here plus the mile high brownie and everything is excellent. These are great cupcakes. Not great vegan cupcakes or great gluten free cupcakes. Great cupcakes. Love the cupcakes. Love the ice cream. This place is a must visit for anyone, vegan or otherwise. I usually get the mile high brownie, triple fudge brownie and the chocolate chip cookie sandwich. They are all delicious - however, I just don't like buttercream all that much hence only 4/5. The brownies are sweet, moist and rich in flavour. The quality of service is exceptional; the staff is pleasant, kind and sincere. They do need to practice a better system for efficiency and speed of service; the lines can be long but it's worth the wait to see a smiling face ready to assist you. Though I'm not much of a cupcake fan in general, I do think their flavours are much more flavourful than the offerings available to the gluten free, vegan crowd. I come here at least once a week and purchase for friends, family and the office - everyone is happy and can't believe the product is free of gluten, eggs, dairy and nuts. Fantastic experience! I've recently gone completely vegan and have been eager to try out local vegan bakeries. The staff are wonderful, as is the decor. You just feel happy when you're inside! I went first thing in the morning and it was lovely and quiet (although I know this is rare!) I ordered a Turmeric Latte, Chocolate Donut and I purchased a bag of granola. The latte was spicy and warm and the donut was incredibly moist and rich. I'm planning on baking with the granola later this week. Definitely worth the bus trip from Hamilton! I feel like I love the idea of Kelly's Bake Shoppe, but it falls short of being a "must-go". Let's start with the positives. It's aesthetically pleasing, both from the exterior and interior. The staff are always very kind, helpful and professional. The location is perfect, in the heart of downtown Burlington. Now for the negatives... It's not a place for everyone... because it's a vegan bakery, this isn't a place I'd take kids to get a cheap cupcake. The baked goods don't have a taste, this may be because of the vegan ingredients.. As a non-vegan, I don't place as much value on the ingredients being vegan so to me the high price point is a drag. Overall, it's worth stopping if you're in downtown Burlington but I personally wouldn't go out of my way. read more

Went to Starbucks for a coffee and walked past this bakery, it looked appealing so i walked inside. Proved that I made a right choice. The cakes looked so yummy that I had to get some to try. Cupcake was very sweet,very,sweet. The icing was soft and the cake was not hard. I like the brownie, which melted in my mouth every bite I had. Cookie sandwich was pretty good too. The perfect amount of chocolatey. it always tastes fresh an like its right out of the oven. I the past I've had the hot chocolate and i didn't like that but I dont keep going back for that theres a strabucks up the road. I do return for the mile high brownie. I've boughten my parents cookies from the shoppe and they loved them and my dads basically a cookie expert. I'm sure I can be responsible for taste testing the original Kelly's Bake Shoppe before it became what it is now! I remember Michael hand delivering cupcakes and world peace cookies to The Buzz for Men when I worked there! Complimented of course! The team Kelly has is outstanding and extremely particular about being authentic and original! Yes it's true they used to make the cupcakes bigger in 2008 and now they are smaller but seriously if you are a real health conscious person you cant even finish one of any delicious item they offer in their shoppe! Like it's so rich and sweet the portions are amazing! And it helps people like myself avoid in over sugaring my diet! I guess I don't like vegan baked goods. It's such a cute shop with a ton of different cupcakes and sweets. I got the chocolate coconut cupcake and the pumpkin scone. What was common between these two was that even though the cupcake and scone were moist, they were also dry and gritty somehow. Maybe that's how gluten free food is, but I still didn't enjoy the treats too much. In addition, there was too much buttercream on both treats, with too much butter taste and not enough of other flavours. The cupcake was sweet but didn't have much chocolate in it. I must say though, in contrast the pumpkin scone was rich in pumpkin flavour. I wish I enjoyed it more, considering how pretty the food is here (and how it isn't cheap either! In total it was close $10 for both items). And I know it can't be easy to recreate the textures and flavours of conventional baked goods while avoiding certain ingredients. So props to them for the effort. read more

I've been to Kelly's Bake Shoppe about 4 or 5 times now, usually when I'm in the Burlington area visiting my dad or wanting to take a stroll down by the water. The location of this little bakery is GREAT. Such a fun little downtown core to stroll through with lots of cute unique shops and lovely scenery. I love grabbing a treat from here in the summer time and enjoying the weather. I have to be honest and say that I've never tried any of their cupcakes, which is something I know they advertise a lot on their Instagram page (shame on me!). BUUUUUT I've tried their soft serve ice cream (as well as some toppings), 2 types of cookies and their ice coffee. Their soft serve is OK. It's nothing special. Tasty, sure, and satisfies any cold treat cravings you may have on a summer day, but I think it's definitely over priced for what you're getting. Their Snickerdoodle cookie and World Peace cookie are both AWESOME though, and I could happily munch on those all day. As for their ice coffee, it's OK too. Overall, a little pricey and I don't love their treats, but I do enjoy them when I need a vegan snack to satisfy my cravings. Check it out! read more

In response to Kelly's Bake Shoppe response: Kelly your boxed milks say it is made on shared equipment with treenuts. When I questioned the staff about this they also informed me that Bob's Red Mill is not safe for a few of the nut allergies, the same you listed below. You are going to have to educate your staff, and update us all, including the coconut milk that was at your coffee station that reads in plain english 'made at a facility that also processes treenuts'. All Bob's Red Mill gluten free flour states the facility warning. My son requires 2 epipens/rounds of benadryl/rounds of prednisone on a trace amount of 3 types of nuts. For some the nut warnings need to be heeded. I remember a girl that went into a coma some years ago when she thought she was consuming something gluten free. It is important for some people to be clear of no nuts in the recipe and restaurant and possible contamination in the ingredients from manufacturer. read more

I was in the area and I hadn't had any breakfast yet so I thought I'd stop in to grab something to eat. The shop is totally cute. It's pink, black and white and the decor is just darling (even the washroom is the cutest food establishment washroom I've ever seen). I selected a vanilla coconut cupcake and a cinnamon sugar donut along with an herbal tea. My total was about 12 bucks. Is this the best cupcake or donut you're ever going to eat? No, that's crazy talk. There's only so much you can do without eggs and gluten. Sorry. It's the truth. But this is the best vegan, gluten-free donut and cupcake you're going to eat. I can say that fairly confidently. And I'm not comparing these treats to the "normal" variety, I'm comparing them to other contenders in this vegan, gluten-free field. I have nothing against eggs and gluten. I eat eggs and gluten all the live long day, but dairy and I are not great friends. And until someone opens just a dairy-free bakery, this is a good way to indulge in the occasional bakery treat without suffering the dairy sinus headaches, the red eyes, and the itchy skin for the rest of the day. The coconut cupcake was really tasty. Moist and coconutty. The donut was good, but it tasted strongly of apples (I'm assuming applesauce is a substitute for eggs). I like apples, but I wasn't expecting an apple donut. If they had called it an apple pie donut or an apple cider donut, I would have been totally on board. If you don't like apples, don't get the cinnamon sugar donut. The service was lovely and sweet. read more

I have to be honest, I had never tried a gluten free or vegan cupcake before I went to Kelly's so I don't have much to compare it to. I bought 14 to take to a staff meeting and was shocked when it cost me over $60. I mean, I know the ingredients are more expensive, but that's outrageous for items that are eaten in two bites. We spent a solid 10 minutes of the meeting critiquing the cupcakes. Some flavours were dry, some were oily and some were great. I really liked the one that had fruit in it. Made it very moist. Chocolate was very oily. Any of the lighter coloured ones (except for the lemon) were a little on the dry side. I give the icing an A+. I don't know how you make icing without butter, but it was pretty darn close to butter cream. Lighter, but delicious. The cupcakes came in an adorable box with a liner to help them not fall over in the car. Very helpful! I gave Kelly's a three star rating purely based on the obscene price of these (now trendy) baked goods, but I have to say, the staff are just so darn friendly and helpful. They suggested flavours and even included candles in the box so we could have a little birthday celebration for my boss. Fantastic customer service. I would love to say that I will be back, but most likely I won't. I personally do not have an allergy or any specific diet I follow, I just wanted to see what all the hype was about. If I was entertaining anyone that had an allergy though, I definitely would stop in and pick up something delicious for them. Just one though.
