After a completely botched move with another piano company that left my 1929 Hamburg Steinway M severely chipped and dented, I needed a mover who was going to re-instill confidence and help me get over the trauma of watching my piano get damaged. Ryan Greene and his guys were amazing and helped me transport the piano from San Francisco (where it originally was damaged) to the piano repair shop at John Callahan's in Alameda. Ryan and the other guys were professional, courteous, and polite. They were on time and immediately diagnosed the issue on the tight turn in my staircase. There were several stark differences between the original movers and Kelly Movers: 1) Ryan showed up with three guys and knew exactly what equipment to bring, including a professional dolly and all the right padding to protect my instrument. This was not the case with the other mover, who cheaped out and tried to move it with two people only. 2) The team made the move quickly, but not hastily. They paid close attention to detail, especially at the turn in the staircase (where I was sure I was going to have a heart attack) and navigated it easily. 3) The team was very knowledgeable: they pointed out my previous movers installed the legs on the Steinway incorrectly (they are all numbered and they mixed up all the numbers) and that instilled confidence in me that they knew their pianos well. In addition, I found out they have been moving pianos for SF Opera house for the last four years -- another added bonus. Ryan and his guys will be moving the piano back to its final destination in Foster City and I couldn't be more excited. Pay the extra premium and hire these guys, and then tip them well. read more

Our family has been using Kelly Moving for over 20 years. The last time they moved my piano was unbelievably complex...it was an upright grand piano that wouldn't make it through any door but a slider, so just when I thought "this one's a wrap" they macguivered it down the side of a mountain (in the rain!) and careful broke down part of my neighbors fence to get it into my yard, then BOOM through the slider and into my living room. Then they very casually reconstructed the fence, perfectly. They consistently blow my mind over the many years. We have worked with them on their problem-solving and creativity. Holy cow. Cannot believe how bad this experience was. We gave a full scope of our project two months before our move. Had a very hard time getting a response to either email or phone (can't emphasis enough how bad they are at responding). We finally had some back and forth confirming dates two weeks before our move date. And then, 5 days before our move in date we get this message: "Honestly, we are piano movers, not household movers. We don't provide any boxes or do any type of packing. We come and move heavy objects. Maybe you need to call a household moving company for this job." Totally left us in the lurch. Nothing like a bad experience to get me to sign up for Yelp. I spent over two weeks to get Charles to come look at my piano move (from upstairs to downstairs), because I knew it would be a tricky undertaking. Charles has never answered his business phone, so it's a series of many tag calls to get the appointment set up. He finally came to look at the move, and explained how easily he could do it, and quoted me a price. "Let me know when you want to schedule it" he said when leaving. Based upon his visit, I went ahead and purchased new furniture for my living room. A couple of days later, when I called to schedule the move, he emails me that "I've changed my mind, I don't think I can move that piano without major carpentry to make an easier route." Total flake out. He ignored my email reply. The whole experience was totally unprofessional and frustrating, and a waste of time. Since then, I had a couple of movers who quoted the job quickly, and I had a great experience with Viking Piano Movers from San Rafael. I can't review the Kelly Moving crew's services but I can provide a testimonial to the new owners' contagiously happy and respectful attitude and generosity of spirit. I have been trying for quite some time to find a non-profit or individual who would take my piano as a donation. I hate having to give up my piano; but with another impending move, it has become an impractical possession to keep. In the last week, I've emailed several non-profits - including one which claims to send pianos to musicians to Cuba under the radar - contacted past musician friends and posted "free piano" to piano-specific sites. Note: Craigslist is flooded with free piano posts - too much competition. This morning I was sitting at my desk and noticed a moving truck park outside my window. One of my neighbors, it appeared, was leaving but as it turns out, he'd bought an organ and needed Kelly Moving piano movers to move it to his upstairs apartment. "He's a musician!" I thought, and sprinted outside to ask if he knew anybody who might want my piano. He said "no" at the same time as Ryan, from Kelly Moving said "I do." Ryan explained that he knew of a non-profit in Marin City that was looking for a piano. Long story short, almost instantaneously, the crew very carefully and gently removed my piano and loaded it into their truck. Ryan gave me the youth center's director's name and phone number and said they will be so happy to have my piano - that my daughter and I can visit The Hanna Project - whose mission is to promote literacy and achievement through culture and the arts - and see our piano being used at the gallery where kids will be able to learn music on it. As happy as I was to find such a profoundly perfect home for my piano; I also noticed that the 3 guys, including Ryan, one of the old Kelly crew members who took over the company from the previous owner who retired, were the loveliest men I'd met in a long time. They were such happy, friendly guys - sweet and conversational and easy-going. These guys aren't slugs. They're special. I think I can speak for all of us that today's serendipitous meeting was somewhat of a blessing. Ryan remarked, "God works in mysterious ways." Amen to that, Ryan. I hope our paths cross again someday. I couldn't imagine these guys having an off day. They seem to take a lot of pride in their work and do it well. Thanks, guys! We contacted Kelly Moving after purchasing a solid marble bathtub. Upon purchasing it the big question was how are we going to get this heavy thing down the hill to our property. We left it at the shop until we could coordinate the delivery with the movers to bring it from the road to the property. Kelly movers said they could do it and to call them the day it was delivered. So we had it delivered a week later. Upon calling they said, oh we can't today. No explanation, no apology. So we scheduled them to come the next day. Didn't come then either; a problem with their truck. Okay that happens. On the third day they said they couldn't move it at all as they didn't want to be liable for it if something happens. That would have been fine if they told us straight away that they couldn't do it a week and half before when they were originally contacted. By casually saying yes without due diligence as to what they were actually agreeing to they left us hanging. Now we are scrambling to find a mover with the item sitting in front of our mailbox on the road. I find this way to approach customer service very unprofessional and would not recommend them to anyone. read more

I have used Kelly Moving many times over the past 25 years and have recommended Kelly highly to others not only for their expertise in piano moving, but their quick response, and professionalism (5 stars). But today they reached a new pinnacle in piano moving for me. I wanted my 7' grand moved immediately from my studio before the next hard round of storms. My studio sits at the end of a long sloped 300 yard field, which now is muddy and full of ruts. I warned them of the possible problems with their truck getting stuck attempting to return up the hill. They assured me they'd handle it. (Ryan said they'd even moved a 7 foot grand piano onto a boat from a raft!) When they arrived, the gate onto the field was too narrow for the truck to drive through. No problem! They put my 7' grand on a dolly and pulled it up the 300 yard field of slush, ruts and wet grass to the truck.....AND on top of it all, at a very reasonable price! They're amazing!! Charles Kelly and his crew have moved all of my pianos (3) over the past 16 years. I have a concert grand, as well as 7' and a 5' grands. These pianos have been moved multiple times into my house and into recital halls. Every move has been perfect. Charles fees have always been reasonable (and the best) and delivery is always on time. Kelly Moving just removed a piano from our house, and some douchebag must have been following their moving van. The thief pulled up and stole a bag of piano legs out of the back of the truck (obviously having no clue what he was taking). One of the movers saw him in the act and chased down his car, and managed to convince the thief to dump the stolen parts. Maybe it was not a risk he should have taken, but he certainly saved the piano's owner from an expensive replacement. They were all kind of shocked (welcome to Contra Costa County :/ ). Keith Price and his 2 man crew got me out of a huge bind. Pearson's Appliance in Napa sold me a 600 pound refrigerator, complete with delivery up 2.5 flights of steps, and carting away of the old one. The Pearson's crew hauled the fridge up one flight of steps in 2 hours and after another hour of trying, couldn't get it in the front door. So they left the fridge on my front stoop and took off, refusing to come back and finish the job. So now I have a 600 lb fridge sitting on the stoop in front of my house, outside and about 25 steps below where I need it in the kitchen. And the lovely folks who sold me the fridge have taken my money and refused to help. Kelly's to the rescue! The crew from Kelly's showed up the next day, right on time and within 45 minutes the fridge was standing in the kitchen right next to the old one. Kelly Moving moved our large, antique, full upright Mason & Hamlin when we moved into our house. The moving company that brought everything from the old house promised us they could do it, but the steep stairs and 180 degree turn landing foiled all their attempts. Kelly came on the scene, understood they needed some more 'muscle' and came back and moved it carefully upstairs. It was like watching artists at work. As of this morning I have used Kelly Moving 6 times. Every time Charles and his crew have been awesome. They are on time, they are quick, and they go above and beyond. Each time they have been able to do my move the next day, or as soon as I needed it. They are very careful with both the piano and my home. They are very careful to never let the metal moving cart make contact with either the piano or my wood floors. They moved my old piano out to my garage for me when they moved the new one in without any extra charge. They noticed that the screws were loose on my piano bench (the one already in my home, not one they had moved) and brought tools in to tighten it up for me. As if that wasn't enough, they are also less expensive than other movers that I have inquired about. I can't recommend Kelly Moving enough. read more

When we were ready to retrieve it to move to a new home, JB strongly recommended we use Kelly Movers again, even though we already had another mover lined up to do the rest of our move.
